Honestly, this is 100% breach of contract. Not only could you get your money back, you can sue them for extra expenses incurred for the trip including car rental, hotel, airfare and possibly received a judgement in return. If you really wanted to to push it, you could aim a bit higher and threaten more serious lawsuits for not just recovery of expenses, for actually allowing you to stay in harms way by refusing to do nothing. Then, just settle for the rest because they will settle, and if they don't settle, find a good lawyer, have him work Pro Bono, give him 30% of any result or whatever.
