middle-eastern leaders spending all of their resources on yet another flashy mega-project.

We'll see how successful these so called pharoes still are when the stone and copper mines run out.

this comment section is exceptionally shitty, my god and i thought i was the one who's the expert at shitposting

The pyramids are rightfully Saudi. King Abdulaziz, طيب الله ثراه, gave them to Egypt for protection. So give them back.

In all ages the ruling class ruthlessly exploits the working class to build useless monuments for their fragile ego. 5000 years ago it was the Pyramids, today we have Burj Khalifa. Time goes on and we're still in this cycle of stupid shit.

Settle down chairman Mao, it's just a picture of an old building.

Here, have a picture of some nice utilitarian, non-exploitative commieblocks buildings to help calm you down.

These buildings are shit. They're everything wrong with Modern Architecture, and if anything, they're the perfect example of what daret is complaining about. I mean, I don't agree with him but these buildings are really dystopian shit that was imposed on the peasants by the coffee-sipping elites.

Read about a similar group of buildings ... you might learn something.

Fun Fact: The architect who designed Pruitt-Igoe is the same guy who designed the World Trade Center. The man is literally famous for designing buildings famous for being demolished.

Yes. That's the joke.

Not all buildings need to be utilitarian. Artistic expression is "useless", but it's still a fundamental part of the human condition. Architecture is art, the same way music or painting is. Monuments is a way for a society to put it's mark on the world, centuries after its gone.

Building a massive necropolis to house inbred demi-gods and their worldly possessions is probably a little much, but you know what I mean. It's impressive that after all this time, the pyramids are still the first thing that come to mind when you hear the word "world wonder".

Oh my god ew. I take back my love for you.

Monuments is a way for a society to put it's mark on the world

Monuments like these are a way for the ruling class to put it's mark on the world, not society as a whole. I'm sure if the thousands of workers that slaved away building the pyramids or building Burj Khalifa were even asked how to allocate the money needed to build these two monuments, they wouldn't pick this shit. They'd pick better schools, better housing, better healthcare; you know, stuff that actually benefits them. Instead we have the elites looting the wealth of society to out-build each other in the race to see who can build the tallest skyscraper. It's theft. It's criminal.

Indian and other foreign labourers in Dubai live in fucking slums. And yet the wealth created by them, the wealth appropriated by the Dubai ruling class, is used to build this shit, not to improve their living conditions. Don't you dare defend this atrocity.

Architecture is art. Architecture is amazing. It would be even more amazing if it was built democratically, not through exploitation of back-breaking labour.

It seems like you want to have it both ways. You want architectural monuments and not to employ cheap (and consenting) labor at the same time. And the UAE has allocated resources pretty well with regards to schools, hospitals, housing, etc. At the same time, they're building beautiful monuments (most of which are privately funded) to celebrate their own country.

And the UAE has allocated resources pretty well with regards to schools, hospitals, housing, etc.

I mean a cursory look at Dubai and the status of the South Asian and other foreign labourers there will show you this is not the case at all. I don't know if you're just outright lying or genuinely ignorant.

And if you're basically telling me that you can't have beautiful architecture without being built through exploitation and theft then fuck it; the hell with your monuments.

How is it exploitation and theft? I'm neither lying or ignorant. The best an unskilled labourer in India or Bangladesh could ever hope to make per month is 50 USD, while the minimum in Dubai is 150 USD and can get to 400 USD or more. These workers are consenting and informed adults making at least three times what they get back home and for the same level of work. So no, I don't believe they're being exploited.

Both the Bangladeshi and the Emirati employers are exploiters. When the alternative is starving to death, anybody will consent to an exploitative, dangerous, and degrading existence to survive.

wow

i guess 18 year old sex workers in eastern europe being abused and dehumanized 8 hours a day by men 30 years older than them so they can feed their children are consenting and informed as well amirite?

also, just because the wages and living standards are shitty back home does not justify their mistreatment elsewhere.please read up on the treatment that these southasian workers receive in dubai and elsewhere, treated like slaves so that the royal family can have their precious little towers to satisfy their ego. you're making light of their suffering

That's not at all what I was talking about. From the workers' perspective, they can either work for a much lower wage and nonexistent safety standards in their own countries or do the same work but with better pay and better protections (as difficult as that may be for you to believe). What I want is for them to at least retain the right to choose on their own and not have others choose for them.

.....or another option would be for them to protest for better wages and living conditions and for the others to stand by them in their struggles. what you are calling for is for them to just accept their defeat and settle down for their mistreatment

What you're calling for is to erase that second option for them without having a viable plan to create a better one.

I bet that 50 USD in Bangladesh will go a much longer way than the 400 in Dubai. Also, we've all seen the documentaries were these people aren't allowed to return home cause their passports are taken by their employers. That doesn't sound like consent to me.

I'm sure if the thousands of workers that slaved away building the pyramids [...]

I think it has been established by historians that the pyramids were built by employees who were paid well. Not slaves, and certainly not Jewish slaves. Since it served a religious purpose for all of society (as they believed Pharaohs to be their God, and they should pass to the afterlife unhindered), I see the pyramids as more of a public works project that stimulated the economy.

Your logic is kinda circular here. Religion and political authority weren't separate in Egypt (the Pharaohs were the Gods, as you said), so insofar as the monument was ostensibly built to serve a religious function it is automatically still a monument to the ruling class.

Their version of immortality is so silly, why couldn't they just think of one god, pray to him five times a day and wait till their bodies are dumped in the ground like normal people?

Do I smell some edgy sarcasm?

he is talking about the rampant waste of human effort and resources involved in what the ancient egyptians did due to their wordly beliefs, the muslim rituals that you just described are not like this. the prayers barely take any effort and they don't waste your time

It's not our place to judge other people's beliefs. If I want to believe that Sisi is a God-King semi-divine Pharaoh who is heaven's representative on Earth, then who are you to say it's a waste of effort and resources.

This thread is very weird. I've seen your statements said here before by other people almost verbatim and they were widely supported. And its not like your statements are that controversial in real life, especially not in the Arab world.

I don't know what's happening here, everyone just decided to let their inner contrarian free and proceeded to shitpost

Fragile ego? Sounds like something a feminist would say. What would world be today if it was run by feminists I wonder? We build for same reason we plant our seeds.

You're conflating who actually builds, and whose name gets plastered on what 'we' build. You're conflating who actually does the labour, and who gets to appropriate the wealth created by what 'we' built. Get it straight before you run your mouth.

It's the ambition. All great men make others believe in their vision. This is how we got to space and how we will destroy our planet. We will destroy it because that's what men do, never satisfied with what is given to us. Bigger better stronger.

Oh my god yes the south Asian labourers slaving away building that monstrosity were really mesmerized and taken by the wondrous charisma and ambition of Khalifa al-Nahyan. My word how they were absolutely entranced by his sheer STRENGTH OF PERSONALITY. They really BELIEVED in his VISION.

Are you fucking stupid or do you just not understand how capitalist production works?

We plant our seeds to eat. The pyramids aren't food. Unless you listen Ben Carson and think they're grain silos, in which case feminists ruling the world are the least of your worries.
