Even though a bit past his prime, I'd say it was Schweinsteiger. Captain of World Cup winning team, revered as a God in his home country, Football royalty to boot. I just wish he was a bit more fit, would have been an invaluable presence on the field.

I agree with you here. He came with a ridiculous pedigree.

would have been an invaluable presence on the field.

He still can be! Lets see what happens next year.

He will be, no two ways about it. We have lacked a leader on the pitch since Roy left. Plus the first few games that he played, he was actually orchestrating the play. My god what a wonderful sight it was to see.. Always wanted Bastian to play for Utd and never ever thought he'd sign for us. When he did, I couldn't believe it for the first few months. I think he will be very important next season, and he should be. Guy still has a good season or two left in his engine. 15-20 games a season and i'll be happy.

Schweinsteiger didn't even gather 1/10th of the buzz as Rio's transfer. How young are the subscribers of /r/reddevils here? The Rio buy smashed the British transfer record (a defender mind you), while Bastian Schweinsteiger was a Bayern reject if we aren't mincing words.

You wanna tell us that Rio at leeds was more famous than basti at Bayern?

I'd say if you compare where they were in their careers when the transfer went through, the prestige of the clubs involved, then... Yes, Rio's transfer was a much bigger transfer than Schweinsteiger's. If Schweinsteiger had transferred five years ago to United, that would be a completely different matter.

Rio was considered by many the best young defender in the world, moving to one of the best teams and the biggest club in the world... Bastian transferred for a cut-rate price in the twilight of his career to a rebuilding team (still biggest club in the world) that needed leadership more than on-field prowess. There is no comparison between the two transfers.

Di Maria and Falcao arrived with a reputation and a half between them! Whether or not they're deemed bigger than Mou is probably down to the individual to think.

Absolutely, but I dont know if they were quite as high profile as Jose Mourinho.

I really did not rate DiMaria that much, but loved Falcao was with United.

[–]Mitchel_C95Blind 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

Di Maria's time with us was questionable though he did have moments of greatness. However, you cannot deny he was one of the best wingers in the world when he joined us.

[–]hoochiscrazy_Giggs 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

Plenty have left with a huge reputation but few have joined

Possibly. Cantona was a huge personality, Ronaldo grew into Ronaldo, Rooney after Euros was a young star, and Martial was a huge story because of the transfer fee, but I don't know if we've acquired someone who came equipped with so much baggage (both good and bad) before.

Something a bit ironic at this point is that besides Mou and Bastian Schweinsteiger (one of the most prolific names in German football history) I'd argue that our most high-profile acquisition was Louis Van Gaal....

He might be.

Veron when he arrived came with a big reputation. Di Maria and Falcao too.

It's funny, we've always been a club that creates the talent or the legacy. Rarely have we had to look externally for a dig out. SAF, to be fair, came with a pedigree when he arrived though.

Certainly had a pedigree, but winning in Scotland isn't the same as winning the CL with teams from multiple countries and having a ridiculously arrogant nickname.

[–]Giordano_5Martial 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yes i would say so. Most of the people who are superstars today like Ronaldo or SAF built their reputation at the club. The only person who could challenge him is maybe Di Maria.

Surprised I'm the first to say, but RVP? I know he was in his late 20s but he was a huge signing. Taking arsenals captain, club legend and top goal scorer was massive.

It was a different time but Bryan Robson was a huge player when he signed. Ditto Law when he moved back from Torino for a British transfer record.

If what you're asking is "in modernity who is the highest profile staff member United have acquired" then it's probably between Veron and Maureen.

I'd add Rio's record transfer to that list of "modern" big transfers. Hard to overstate how important his move was and how much it cost (~34 million pounds in 2002).

Agreed. But he wasn't quite a superstar yet IIRC. He went to world cup 1998 but he didn't play until 2002.

Well, consider that his move to Leeds from West Ham was already a British transfer record and the world record for a defender. He then repeated both of those with his move to United. You're right that he wasn't a World Cup starter til he was 23 in 2002, but he was the youngest-ever defender capped for England at 19 (Micah Richards of all people beat that record).

I'd say his transfers were absolutely stunning at the time, and it's been easy to forget how big a deal it was and how class he really was. I think Ferdinand was one of the two or three greatest defenders of his time. Last couple years with QPR tended to take the shine off that a bit, but he shouldn't be slighted.

There's not a shred of doubt that he is the biggest in sheer number, by far. Because of the hype around this job for a year, because of who Mourinho in fact is, he is the biggest. He is the only thing that's going to be talked about for most of the summer.

I'm sure in the past other acquisitions may have been just as hyped, but United is much bigger now than it ever was.
