From my personal experience:

All PC owner I know use Steam, humble bundles, green man gaming, isthereanydeal, bundle star, cheapshark etc... and 90% never pirate, the rest usually buy the game once the price drops.

All console player I know have at least 1 device modified to some extent to get pirated games (handled linkers/wii with a huge hard drive and a custom channel for most).

I pirated the mass effect series, loved it, and bought it through origin. I don't know how a console player gets to test a game like that. Or even finds out about games to try, since I can just change to a different tab on my gaming device to do so.

When I was wayyyyy younger (Steam was only used for counter strike... yes I'm that old), I pirated a lot of games, played very few. In that list I LOVED the Soul River / Blood Omen series. One of the 1st thing I did when I had a job has been buying every single one of those games on GoG.

it's not double standard, it's the ppl I know around me. It's not meant to be a globalisation, just what I can observe.

And those friends are in general parents, piracy on console is an easy win: no buget cost on a machine that can't really be messed with (compared to a PC).

I went through a different route with android handled, the game are dirty cheap to begin with... but sure, my kids can't play the "real" mario/pokemon...

The last game I pirated was Dying Light just to see if it would work on my PC at the time. I had a Core 2 Duo paired with an R7 260x and 4 gigs RAM. It didn't work very well, so I uninstalled it. I've since got better hardware. I still haven't purchased Dying Light, but I don't have the pirated version either. That game deserves the money, IMO, I just don't have it at the moment.

I used to pirate games as trials really, but it's too much hassle these days. My ISP (Virgin Media) is one of those bitches that complied with the block requests of torrent etc. sites.

I've got a decent job n stuff so I don't mind wasting a bit of money (though I'd prefer not to :p), though I do tend to wait for launch reviews before I buy anything.

Hmmm... last time I bought a piece of hardware for my computer was a GTX780 on launch day. That's $650, and it came out... 3 years ago? Yup, exactly 3 years ago.

Planning on a GTX1080 (partner card, not Founders Edition), so that's another ~$600, three years since the last purchase, not a bad track record IMO. And obviously the rest of my system is quite a bit older as well. I did not upgrade my system until a bit after 2nd gen Core i parts were out. Was on a C2D Q9550 E0 before this.
