[MEGATHREAD 2] - Manchester United Management change (self.reddevils)

This MEGATHREAD is for you all to discuss the supposedly imminent change in Manchester United management, with Louis Van Gaal set to be relieved of his duties so that Jose Mourinho can return to football.

What we know so far:

  • Merely hours after the FA Cup final victory, a leak seems to have come from Jorge Mendes himself that the change is imminent.
  • Louis van Gaal was not made aware at all and is set to be told today (Monday).
  • The public announcements are expected to be made tomorrow (Tuesday), where Ed Woodward should announce the Retirement of Van Gaal and inform the media and fans that Mourinho is to take over from June 1st.
  • Mourinho is apparently 'furious' that Mendes has led this leak so close to the final, as he see's LVG as a mentor and close friend.
  • Announcement could come late in the day on Tuesday as they must inform the New York Stock Exchange at time of opening, though it can occur earlier if they prep a shirt memo for opening time instead.

Additional information;

  • It appears that a move for Zlatan Ibrahimovic is underway and that the chance to work with Jose Mourinho again is a key factor in the deal.

  • Additional transfer rumours appear to be coming out thick and fast, with Joao Mario and Andre Gomes heavily linked with a move, as well as Alvaro Morata. Other suggestions are Icardi and Stones as well.

Giggs wouldn't have the experience for those roles & I think he wants to move into management, or at least be an assistant for a while longer.

LVG will go & relax with his wife, the way all this has been handled I highly doubt he'd want to work with our board any longer.

I've read somewhere that Mourinho likes to have someone around, who knows the club well, so I guess he could opt for keeping Giggs around. As for Giggs, I think he might not want to stay, though it would certainly a great opportunity for him to stick around for a year to learn from Mourinho too - this would also benefit the club, so it seems to me the most optimal solution. Obviously, the people involved will decide and may have a completely different opinion, but as I see if Giggs would stay for a year before going into management somewhere else, he would have learned from SAF during his playing time, from Moyes (learning from his mistakes is also something), from LVG as his assistant, and then Mourinho. That would certainly be a pretty solid basis to build on.

I've worked in management (teaching management but...) and I know of very few people willing to accept a demotion, it's usually an easy way to force a resignation. So I don't see LvG going from absolute boss to a DOF where the roles would be 'shared' between himself and the manager. As to Giggs, if he doesn't have the experience to manage I don't see how he can become a DOF.

Don't get me wrong, I want a DOF, I think it's the best way to limit the damage I fear Jose may bring, but we need better experieince than LvG or Giggs.

I lot of people (I'm not one of them) feel like LvG hasn't made many good buys and that the squad isn't good enough.

I genuinely feel like Mou has a good foundation to work with and that his counter-attacking style will suit a good number of players more than LvG's system. He should be able to elevate the current players we have, as he has done in the past with other teams/players.

I think the team is champions league quality but only just. I'm scared that we don't have enough world class players, a team of good players often needs a great one to break down top defences.

I think most people agree that we are still need at least a couple more top signings to get us back to the top though.

Our defence needs reinforcing, De Gea has hidden masked the problems with his sheer brilliance. He should not be having to make anywhere near the number of saves that he is.

Two or three nice signings between midfield, the wings and upfront could completely upgrade the attacking side of our game as well.

Exciting times ahead!!

I agree wholeheartedly, it's funny though, when there was a lineup thread yesterday the majority of people were including 5 or so new signings in their starting XI. It's just hard to imagine, as you said, 3 first teamers seems more realistic.. A CB, a CM and a RW should do the trick. We'll probably get Ibra as well so I guess that would make 4!

The man is too big of a power player in modern football, but if that's the way football is today it doesn't hurt to have him "on our side". SAF hated the role agents play in the modern game, but he also knew how to use them to our benefit. He and Mendes had a very cordial relationship over the years, which was to a mutual benefit. Mendes leaking the information of Mourinho's arrival can be be interpreted both ways. It's disrespectful towards LVG but it also paves the way for the change most of us want. If Mendes can help make that change happen sooner then I'm all for it.

I'd argue he laid the foundations in terms of recruitment, retaining players and promoting youth from the academy. He had all the ingredients he needed, he just messed up the execution.

I really can't see Mourinho making the same mistakes. Our team is currently well set up to absorb pressure, something a Mourinho team needs to do. He just needs to add the fast counter attacking aspect to it, something Martial, Memphis, Rashford etc will excel at.

He's coveted this position for ages, I don't think he's going to go into this job as harsh as some of the others. He knows the English press inside-out, people at the club aren't poisonous like at Real, he's got enough money to cure world hunger, and he's sitting on the tallest throne in the land.

Not unusual for them to show up after a season as they usually ensure bonus payments are organised and met, but they can do that anytime.
