Pretty interesting how incredibly consistent it is. After Gold/Silver:

All the "Extension" games - Emerald, B2/W2, etc - sold about 7m.
All the remakes of past generations sold about 12m.
All the new generation games sold about 16m.

It's a shame that B2W2 didn't get more sales than it did considering that it has a completely original story and the best postgame of all the pokémon games.

That was my favorite Pokemon game, it was so much fun

Personally, I was really put off by the reuse of the Unova region. I eventually bought it when it was on sale though. I had a reasonable amount of fun with it, but I can't say I was ever really excited for it.

Agreed, the amount of post game content really surprised me and I wish more pokemon games had that amount.

Pokemon fans: this is exactly why we're jumping straight to SuMo and missing out on Z.

They count the new generation games as one game in this chart. So we can probably half their numbers.

I maintain that Pokemon is an excellent example of how to maintain a dynasty of games: Slight innovations, slight story tweaks, same general structure, never breaking the mold.

Now replace "Pokemon" with "Call of Duty" Edit: joking, but I agree

No need to be joking, it's completely fair and justified to call out the repetitiveness of Pokemon.

That's what makes it so easy to pick up and just go. If youve played a previous game, you already know how the basic mechanics are, its a fun fluffy game with cute monsters you claim as 'pets' of sort.

All ages can enjoy it and they have really been smart with the innovations in graphics and mechanic additions.

I just like the new pokemon

I think that's exactly why it works for Pokemon, but not Call of Duty

Huh? Why wouldn't it work for Call of Duty.

People give CoD shit for being "the same". But generally it sells in massive numbers because it gives the fans what they crave.

Nah but they sold 0.1m copies less this year so they're obviously dying out!!!

Nice post I really expected there to be a steady increase after the first gen I'm really surprised by the info.

But Pokémon has always had immense depth for what it is

"Ramirez! Catch them all!"

"Ramirez! Fight the Elite Four with lvl 4 Squirtles!"

"Ramirez! Go join Twitch and win the game with your chat votes!"

I mean, they did go from a WW2 game to futuristic space battles. I'm not sure how repetitive that is.

They somehow made space lame. I don't know how.

IMO call of duty has diverged too much from what made it good

Has it though? I stopped playing around the time Black Ops II came out, but not because I thought the game had changed too much, still felt like the gameplay I loved in Call of Duty 4, but I just can't keep myself interested after having played through 6 campaigns and grinded up fifty levels in multiplayer each iteration, so I instead found something different to play, really want to play a good story RPG but something easier to get into than Witcher 3

Dark souls is great, but punishing

Already played them, one of my favorite series, though I didn't join that wagon until Bloodborne, but I've gone through the rest of the series as well afterwords

You beat 3 already?

Yup, been running around as a disguised mad phantom on the high wall since

Now the games don't play like classic COD titles due to all the jet pack jumping and boosting around the map. The whole futuristic thing in COD has been run into the ground and then some. Hopefully they might make a WW2 title again, especially if Battlefield does really well with a WW1 game.

The campaigns have been 'press X' to progress for a long time.

Hm.....RPG, good story, easy to do.

I recommend Dragon Quest VIII. You can probably get it on PS version's of virtual console, or get it when it finally gets ported to 3Ds this summer.

Referring to the original topic, Pokemon isn't that bad either. A little lacking in story, but definitely good in the battle mechanics.

Xenoblade Chronicles is also extremely good, if you want to seriously deep dive into a story. It's easily 100+ hours long.

Dark Souls and Fallout aren't really RPGs anymore.

Which would be nice if they were evolving (hah) at a reasonable pace. Bragging about "innovative" new 3d graphics that look like they came out of the early 2000's in the year 2013 is not a reasonable pace. You can take one look at GameFreak's resume of games they've developed and see exactly why the handheld pokemon games are evolving so slow, they haven't worked on anything but remaking the same damn handheld game for years. Pokken Tournament looks to be the first pokemon game in years that has any semblance of breaking the mold (Much like Pokemon Stadium was, which also notably was not made by GameFreak) and looking like it wasn't made a decade ago. Pokemon is an IP with huge potential across a wide variety of genres and yet it's largely being squandered by being left in the hand of an inept developer content with using the same formula over and over again with updates so small in between in an online game they'd hardly be considered a hotfix.

It took Pokemon 17 years to discover how to move in 8 directions, can't wait to be able to move in 360 degrees by 2058

Crystal is by far my favorite. Under rated. Loved that Silver, gold and crystal had 16 gyms and 2 elite4,s.

under rated

Practically Gold/Silver which is 2nd best selling in the series. Not hating it just doesn't feel very under rated with those sales.

I believe he was referring specifically to Crystal rather than Gold/Silver/Crystal together.

Crystal isn't under rated. It has a whole lot of 9/10 reviews and people say all the time that the 2nd gen was their favorite. But unless you're a diehard fan, that third version just isn't worth it if you've already bought one of the originals. Yellow happened to be very different from red/blue and allowing you to get all 3 starters probably helped a lot. Also having pikachu on the front of it couldn't hurt. From Crystal and on is more reasonable considering the minor amount of changes they had.

Agreed, it was basically two games in 1. I remember my mind being absolutely blown when you end up back in the original region.

[–]Rithic 1

you should play pokemon liquid crystal.

Liquid crystal is a pretty good Pokémon hack. One of my favourites along with the Pokémon guardians hack.

Pokemon Sapphy too OP

Emerald is #1 for me just for the Battle Frontier. It was like a whole new game.

[–]youwill_neverfindme 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

The battle frontier was amazing. I was so unbelievably disappointed when they took it out of the remake. I understand them wanting to keep the integrity of the different regions (for instance no secret bases in the new games) but it was bull. Shit. When they took out the battle frontier.

Sapphire was the shit.

Loved that whale.

But I like Emerald ;_;

Emerald was da bes

But giratina was pretty fucking cool as well

the only reason i never bought crystal was because as a kid I couldnt convince my parents to buy me another pokemon game after I just got gold/silver.

Pokemon Blue. The real OG. Man it feels crazy that I started watching Pokemon from the very beginning exactly when it first started. Bought all the games. Collected the first Pokemon cards. Wow, what a time that was.

I get amazed every time i see a younger family member or friend's kid playing pokemon. They're going through the same journey we went through as kids 20 years earlier.

I can see why there was no Pokemon Z . Just look at the sales of Crystal, Emblem and Platinum. Having a third spinoff does not work.

Remember that's only the sale of one game, whereas the others are in a pair. Also, the engine is already done, the world is 90% done. It may be a good ROI for what it is.

They still sold a lot though. The reason they didn't do a third is to mix things up like Gen V.

Loved me some Diamond/Pearl

I'm interested to know which version of each game sold the most.

This is probably why we didn't or at least haven't gotten Pokemon Z. Sales for those 3rd games are not very high. So maybe they are just not gonna do it anymore. We will see.. Pokemon Earth?

[–]Sonrrk 1

Chart is pretty accurate.

Other than the original this is my buying pattern:

Long Pokemon break.

Bought Diamond

Skipped Platinum

Bought Soul Silver

Bought Black

Skipped black 2

Bought Y

Skipped Omega

Will buy next game!

People in this thread seem to be ragging on about how pokemon hasn't changed, comparing it to the formulaic CoD series. I don't think that comparison is adequate. Since CoD hit it big with Modern Warfare it has been a bland but enjoyable modern shooter, with a shift to a futuristic setting in more recent years. The core gameplay has remained the same. Shoot x amount of bad guys, press x to not die. Repeat. Multiplayer hasn't had any significant changes either. Most of the guns act in the same way (point and pull trigger until it dies or you do), the killstreaks still follow the same formula and there's been minimal changes to the mechanics of multiplayer.

Pokemon on the other hand, started out with 15 base types and 151 pokemon. Since then there's been 568 pokemon released, 3 new base types added and hundreds of moves added. New mechanics have also been added. 4x damage never existed in the first game, neither did 4x resistances. Held items and abilities are new too, and who could forget the awesome power of Mega Evolutions and the effect they have had on the game.

Every time a new pokemon game is released, the multiplayer pokemon scene gets reinvented. New strategies become viable, old strategies die out in the face of new counters and checks. Your strategy is only limited by your creativity and what you can legitimately create to battle with.

Meanwhile the only real gameplay change I've seen from CoD in the 6 years since I last played it regularly has been "I'll shoot things... with a jetpack".

Considering this series is pirated more than just about any other game, the sales could have been much higher. DS emulators were good before diamond and pearl dropped.

Every pirate is not a potential customer. This is something gaming companies have been trying to push forever. They somehow see all the downloads and think that every one is a lost sale. Not a chance. There are so many people who would never have bought it or use piracy to test a game and then later buy it anyways. There are of course thieves who can afford it but download anyways. They are however not ALL pirates.

Disclaimer: I have pirated one game in my entire life. It was in 8th grade. I later bought it on a humble bundle.

Unbiased studies have shown that piracy has zero affect on game sales. Ok, that's not 100% true, some of those studies have shown that piracy helps sales, but not by much.

Other studies have shown that people who pirate tend to spend more on media than those who don't. Granted, those were studies about music piracy, but the thought process is the same.

The piracy argument is a scapegoat at best. If piracy didn't exist, those numbers wouldn't change (or they would drop slightly).

Disclaimer: I don't pirate games, not worth my time.

I'm surprised HGSS, B2W2, and Platinum didn't get more. Those games were the shit for me. ORAS can go and get abandoned in Orre, where the once vibrant land is now long abandoned...

Oh yeah, Pokemon Sapphy.

i'd love to see red/blue/yellow released for Android/iOS legit, or redone with the original 151 pokemon, by the time it went to gold and silver a lot of my friends just stopped playing because they didn't like all the added pokemon.

[–]Iaskev 0

Huh, I liked the FireReen version more than Sapphy.

I mean firered was a remake and probably didnt get as heavily advertised. Like emerald is the better version of Sapphy, Plat better version of diamond, etc but they sold less because people had one version already.

Flash cards and emulators were a thing when leaf green dropped.

Pokemon Black 4 Life!

the year released across the bottom would be nice. Still neat.

I still can't believe they're still doing the 2 separate versions each release thing.

Well, Gen VI didn't do that, and it was unique what Gen V did in terms of sequels, so they've gotten better.

I believe he meant how they release ruby and saphire, x and y, at the same time. Not how they release ruby and saphire and then later emerald.

I don't really see what's wrong with that.

[–]Retic -1

LeafGreen was where I had begun. I moved onto SoulSilver afterwards. Then Black, Black 2, but never got a 3DS. Want it bad, I've been getting back into it. The memories decided to come back recently, and I find myself going back to play the old games again. I want to get the new ones again. I only get to occasionally play it on my sisters 3DS because she has X, and she wants me to shiny hunt for her because she has an impatience. But, I want a PC so badly. So tough here. 60 FPS 1080p PC, or bringing back memories on the 3DS? PC will be more expensive, but will be worth it. 3DS is cheaper, but buying that, I'll need to wait on the PC longer.

Well, I found my 2DS on Ebay for ~$80, and it came with a charger, a stylus, and Sonic: Lost World(eh...). Then I snagged X, Y, and Omega Ruby soon after at $40 for X, Omega Ruby being a birthday present, and Y being $15 at a garage sale.

Blue, Crystal, Emerald, Firered, Soul Silver. My childhood.

wheres the graph showing the size of fanboys' boner with each subsequent release?

GOD red, blue, and yellow were the shit when I was a lil ass kid. Charmander was like easy mode.

Are there any new/good emulations out?

Pokemon is one of those games I want to play but when I do i get bored of it. I need new pokemon or something.

If you just care about battling you can use pokemon showdown. just look on google. It is actual competitive pokemone though, so keep that in mind.

I have almost all of these and I loved all of them (although B&W were not the best). but it puts into perspective how much repetitiveness sells...

Honestly, I was not impressed with ORAS
