Wayne Rooney: Manchester United have underperformed this season

Wayne Rooney concedes Manchester United have fallen short of their exacting standards this season despite Saturday's FA Cup triumph.

United claimed a record-equalling 12th FA Cup victory when they battled back to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 after extra time at Wembley, but the triumph was overshadowed by continuing doubts over the future of manager Louis van Gaal.

The Dutchman appears set to be removed from his role, with Jose Mourinho widely expected to come in as a high-profile replacement.

And Rooney says there is no way United's Wembley victory papers over the cracks of a disappointing season that saw them miss out on a place in the top four and therefore fail to reach the Champions League.

"He has been under pressure. I think we all have," United captain Rooney said.

"That's part of playing for Manchester United and managing Manchester United - it is a massive club. You have to set standards and we fell below them this season.

"But we have to make sure as players we get back to those standards and make sure we are back challenging for the main trophies."

Rooney also revealed Van Gaal had given the squad no indication of whether he would be staying in the job.

"He hasn't spoken to us about it and I think it's unfair after we have just won the cup to speak about his future," he added.
