Indeed. And I'm sure you're as militant about the democratic self-determination of the Chagos Islands. And presumably we should put the UK's Chinatowns up for plebiscite, ready to hand them over to China if the result goes the wrong way, since self-determination is everything and geography is nothing.

Maybe we should give Argentina back to the locals too instead of those Spanish colonists that seem to have taken over.....

Pot, meet mr kettle.

Geography is everything! Which is why the Faroes should be part of the UK, the Channel Islands part of France, Japan part of Russia, after all, these places are all closer than the Falklands is to Argentina.

In fact, we'll just make all countries perfect spheres in radius of current capital cities, so Argentina can give more or less all of it's eastern provinces to Chile, as they're far closer to Santiago than Burnos Aires, most of their northern provinces to Paraguay (you barely need to drive out of Asuncion to get to apparently Argentine province of Formosa, la Formosa son Paraquayan!), Bolivia would also have a fair claim to some of Argentina's northern provinces, after all their capital is closer than Argentina's and that's how national borders should be drawn.

If Argentina does that, I'm fine with them claiming a right to rule the islands, so long as they respect the wishes of the islanders, because if they view them as puppeted imperialists they'll have to deny the democratic rights of everyone in Argentina with European ancestry too, of course.

... except Chinatown in London has always been part of the UK, doesn't actually have such a high population of Chinese living there, has never been owned by China, and China has never expressed any interest in it.

If you're going to try and criticise the UK for the self-destructive aggression of Argentine dictators, at least come up with a better argument mate.

Oh my god this is amazing. Do you think that everyone that lives in Chinatown is Chinese? Do you think everyone always lives where they work? How do you think China would respond to the gift of a street full of all you can eat restaurants and souvenir shops? Do you think it might make up for the Opium wars? Do you think we should try laying a claim of sovereignty over the car parks of Calais?

So many questions, so little time

I wasn't saying whether or the not the rationale is justified - just outlining what the rationale is for stationing British troops there in significant numbers after 1982.

I'm as militant about the chagos islands. That's easily the most shameful thing we are still doing.

China already owns most of London.
