Future is bright, for sure. With the right mixture of a few players and better tactics, we should be in a fantastic position next year.

Too bad LVG won't be around to taste the fruits of his labor.

It was one hell of a ride. I've never experienced so many ups and downs in one season.

We're in the round of 16, then we're not, twice.

We finish 4th, oh wait, 10 minutes later we lose.

We're top of the league, we don't win a game in 8. I think that's what pushed people over the edge.

This season has been good other than that spell towards the beginning of winter. I don't think Mourinho would be our manager if we had a fit squad during that spell, but it's football you need to make do with what you have.

Van Gaal shot himself in the foot by purposely thinning down the squad to play the youth. I think if we had Van Persie, he wins us another game or two.

I'm tired of the managerial situation, if we find success it will only delay confronting the 800 pound gorilla in the room, who have turned us into Arsenal.

I don't think LVG thinned the squad to play youth - I think it was a combination of Ed's interference and injuries to senior players.

  • If Jones or Rojo wouldn't have been so injured, Blind would have substituted in DM
  • If Shaw wasn't injured, I doubt CBJ would have gotten to play as much as he did
  • If Shaw wasn't injured, Memphis would have played relatively better and I doubt if Rashford would have gotten the chances that he did
  • If Ed wasn't so insistent on clearing deadwood/wages and not paying insane transfer fees, we could have probably bought in at least one more player and he could have made some difference

I think with a few key injures, our whole system was disrupted. LVG would have still given youth a chance, but not relied as heavily on them as he did - although I am really glad that he gave Rashford, Lingard, TFM and CBJ a chance to shine. :)

I agree, though, that it was one hell of a ride. Lots of joys and a lot more disappointments than I would have liked but I believe that LVG was on the verge of something special and am saddened to see him go

If Shaw doesn't get injured, if Valencia and Jones don't get injured, we finish 4th. No doubt.

Unfortunately, the season didn't turn out like that and we were on half a squad for almost half a season.

The most important thing for people to keep in mind is that Martial and Rashford are kids. They're going to have a downturn in form next season I'm sure of it. People need to be more patient with them than with Van Gaal, and I think they will be.

If Mourinho sorts out the defense, we'll be deadly on the counter thanks to who Van Gaal bought. I'm not saying Van Gaal couldn't achieve success either though.

That is our entire season in a sentence. A better striker, or a more prolific RW and our entire season is different. Luke Shaw at LB so Memphis can play LW and Martial RW or CF, changes our season.

Our attack is the only problem we have and LVG has made it clear we couldn't get players we wanted.

I think we did well for this season given the talent in the squad and our injury crises. 1 cup and tied for 4th. I wouldn't call that a failure.

The negative rhetoric was loaded by the media and bought by the fans and there was no way to turn it around. Nothing positive was ever appreciated under LVG including this FA cup win. It's been sullied by immediate news of Mourinho.

I actually don't think our biggest problem was our attack at all - I would argue our biggest problem was our defence. We didn't have capable defensive-minded players in our team to lay the foundation for our attacks.

We couldn't play expansive attack-minded football because if we did, we were very exposed at the back. Smalling and DDG can't save us all the time. Jones and Basti were perpetually injured, Rojo was either injured or in bad form, Darmian struggled to adapt at times and Shaw was out for the season. Schneiderlin is less of an all-out defensive player, but a B2B, defensive CM so he took some time to get used to his new role.

I fail to understand people and media when they are ok with Mourinho/SAF being defensive ("Attack wins you games, defense wins you titles") and are absolutely against LVG building the right tactical and technical foundations for tomorrow. After all, being defensive is all about having a solid foundation at the back, for each match.

I can see what you're saying. LVG woudn't worry so much about attackers helping defensively if our defensive unit was actually strong enough to hold their own.

It's a pity. LVG achieved something despite having a team he considered short of the qualities he'd wanted. When the same happened to Mourinho, he drove a title winning team into relegation form and had to be fired to correct the trajectory of the team.

My issue is Mourinho is not football related, it has more to do with his personality. His tactics are good (I hate them, but they win titles) but he almost always causes infighting among his team. His team underperformed this year because he lost his players - they refused to perform for him.

Both his tenures at Chelsea and at RM, he had players go against him, and that is what I am more afraid of

Well that definitely also comes with the territory. I don't see that changing about Mourinho. The young kids definitely won't like him. I'll be surprised if he doesn't get fired before his contract is up, but crazier things have happened

I constantly shit on Mourinho's personality, and I am still of the opinion that it would be hard for him to finally see out a long term deal. But I think Mourinho can also thrive in an environment like this.

I give him a 30% chance that he stays for more than 5 years. He's never had as soft of a CEO as Woodward, most of his problems come from butting heads with owners and big egos inside the club.

Our dressing room is humble for the most part and I think that works in his favor.

Mourinho can shoot himself in the foot though by signing some more premadonnas. It's up in the air at this point. I just want some managerial stability at this point.

This being said, if he doesn't win a trophy in 2 years much like Mr. Van Gaal, get him out. He will only damage the club.

At 26 Ferdinand was unstoppable. At 26 Smalling is good, don't get me wrong, but Smalling needs to work on his game, and at 26, that's not happening.

Smalling with a better partner will only become better, but I still think he lacks a certain aspect of fortitude about him.

When our defense wasn't makeshift we were top of the league. Sure, we weren't setting worlds alight with our football, but we were definitely effective.

I agree but Ferdinand and Smalling can't be compared - Ferdinand was a star from a young age while Smalling only came on his own last year. He was almost always a mistake waiting to happen.

I agree that Smalling needs a better partner - I would go one step further and say that Smalling (hell, DDG) needs a more stable defence with players complimenting each other. Our LB and RB positions were a joke for the whole season and that put a lot of pressure on Blind and Smalling to perform way beyond their capacities. One of the main reasons we were almost invincible between 2007-2009 and VDS had his goalkeeping record, was because Brown-Ferdinand-Vidic-Evra were everpresent in front of him and perfectly complimented each other.

I think our defence was effective this year only because we played slow, possession-based, low-risk football to prevent defensive blunders and that stifled our attacks a lot
