because people exist in a vacuum and choices are made with literally zero outside influence. in fact, that single sentence sums up all sociological research ever.

oh wait

I consider a pay gap to be a difference in pay for doing the same job. If they aren't finding that, then where is the gap?

This person has a fucking PhD. How on earth can they not understand even the most simple aspects of a study? If I call a cow a purple hippo, cows don't exist!

The comment in question, now at +2646 (I imagine because it's the only sexist trash comment that hasn't been deleted now).

Having a PhD doesn't make you smart. Plus academia has always been a boy's club. /u/justtryme90 is a walking stereotype of that (check out his submission history--nothing but bitcoin nonsense).

Wait, am I missing something here? Person XX and person XY are both hired to do the same job, if the pay is equal what's the issue? Is the argument that we should assess wages across all careers while controlling for gender? That makes no sense.

I promise I'm not trolling you here either I'm more hungover than I realize or I'm just missing something here.

The societal factors that push women into certain industries that overall pay less, are the gap

[–]reventlov 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

The pay gap isn't a single thing; it's a combination of factors:

  1. Studies don't find that person XX and person XY actually get the same pay -- there is still a few % difference for identical jobs.
  2. Person XY is still more likely to be promoted to job + 1 than person XX, thereby widening the gap.
  3. When person XY or person XX is promoted, it's more likely that person XY2 will be hired to replace them than that person XX2 will.
  4. Person XX2 is more likely to choose to go into a lower-paying field than person XY2 in the first place.

The typical antifeminist claim is that the first three factors don't exist, and the fourth factor -- that women choose lower-paying professions -- is entirely innate, and therefore not something we should care about.

The feminist claim is that the first three factors do exist, and that the fourth is due to the vast array of social pressures that push women away from higher-paying fields -- everything from "girls aren't good at math" to sexual harassment by professors to men wanting their wives to stay at home and raise children.

The antifeminist strawman is that we should pay women more for their jobs so that pay gap disappears even though women are doing less/less prestigious/less difficult work.

The actual feminist solution is that we, as a society, should work to eliminate or counteract the pressures that keep women from choosing higher-paying work.

There is one comment that points out that there is a wage gap in the same jobs for married women compared to everyone else with about 40 upvotes that people are basically ignoring to help them feed their gaslight. lol

Basically, take your pick for any top comment in that thread. Commenter is always someone from KiA, MRA, TRP, etc.

    [–]somethingToDoWithMe 9ポイント10ポイント  (1子コメント)

I didn't even need to go into the thread to know it would be shit. I saw the topic it was about and saw it was upvoted near the top. Don't need to be a genius to know where it was going.

    [–]laiki 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

A few times recently when I heard about a study demonstrating some aspect of the wage gap I checked /r/science to see if it caught on there, but inevitably it had a negative score with some men's rights person waffling about the obvious methodological flaws of the study. I was surprised to see the current submission at the top of reddit, but I guess the title explains it since it insinuates that women have full responsibility for the wage gap. So of course it would catch on. Haven't read the study though.
