$15 minimum wage (self.scbt)

Since it seems more and more likely that a $15 minimum wage will be approved in CA this year, I'm very curious what that will mean for SCBT. I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that lab support people make less than that, so maybe they'll be forced to lift the salary freeze, at least for some. Also, $15 is starting to approach starting salaries for lab employees, at least with how things were when I worked there. Maybe that will give employees a bargaining chip? Curious to hear what they end up doing if this minimum wage hike passes.

What I think a lot of people are noticing lately is that people who quit are not being replaced. Several departments seem to be shrinking a little. So if the CEO is forced to pay lab workers $15, he will just hire fewer and make everyone do more work. That seems like the most likely scenario.

That's probably true. I heard after I posted this that it's going to be a gradual thing anyway, so I guess they'll figure out some scheme as they go along.

I used to think about this all the time when I worked at SCBT. I think they will start hiring people without degrees. Lab support might make about that, but people who are making only a few more $$ than min wage with degrees will have an even higher turnover rate than they do now. Where people with out degrees could be excited to learn "science" and happy its not fast food. Lets be honest you don't need a degree to work at that place....
