Excited to hear the justification for this. I mean, this person was a self admitted admirer of one of the biggest terrorists the world has ever known. Also a fan of a leader who killed more people than Hitler, literally.
What is Google thinking? Anyone have any idea?

Was confused because I thought you meant Osama, but then I googled her and realized it's Mao Zedong. :|

Yeah, pretty sad when Bin Laden is not the worst person on your list of heroes.

This is the 50th anniversary of the Great Leap Forward / Cultural Revolution. Even the Chinese government has said they won't commemorate it.

I think they were hoping people would see her portrait next to "EQUALITY" and not look into it any further. Particularly the part where she adamantly supported people who murdered millions.

There are many sides to every story. I don't agree with her views, I also don't see this as support, but as showing a different point of view.

I just feel like there are many activists who are anti-U.S. foreign policy while also not simultaneously speaking words of support for mass-murdering terrorists.

What's really stupid about choosing her is it's also Malcolm X's birthday. Who knew that they could choose someone more controversial than Malcolm X to celebrate?

I’m glad that you are curious why I consider Osama bin Laden as one of the people that I admire. To me, he is in the category of Malcolm X, Che Guevara, Patrice Lumumba, Fidel Castro, all leaders that I admire. They had much in common. Besides being strong leaders who brought consciousness to their people, they all had severe dislike for the US government and those who held power in the US.

Apparently she also spoke out in support of the Shining Path in Peru, who have "disappeared", executed, and tortured 30,000 people.

Yes this is very disappointing. I hope they retract it.

Just from her wiki:
She worked on behalf of Mumia Abu-Jamal, an African-American activist sentenced to death in 1982 for the 1981 murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner
uh
Kochiyama supported Yu Kikumura, an alleged member of the Japanese Red Army, who was arrested in Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam in 1986 when he was found carrying a bomb in his luggage and subsequently convicted of planning to bomb a US Navy recruitment office in the Veteran's Administration building.
uhh
Kochiyama visited in prison Marilyn Buck, a feminist poet, who was imprisoned for her participation in the 1979 prison escape of Assata Shakur, the 1981 Brink's robbery and the 1983 U.S. Senate bombing.
uhhh

That's fucking pathetic. I usually don't like it when people white wash civil rights activism and shun out of hand anybody who used questionable methods or had some questionable views here and there, but this person is a gigantic piece of shit in more ways than she was a good person or important figure in social justice.

All sorts of backlash, and it's still up. Funny how their Roald Dahl doodle was taken down and completely erased from their records as soon as a couple of people accused him of being anti-Israel.

I'm very pro-Israel, and Dahl was both anti-semitic and anti-Israel, but I don't think that was reason to remove him - his political views are certainly distinguishable from his legacy as an author, which is what he was being remembered for. They should have left him up. Kochiyama on the other hand is being remembered for her political views which are pretty horrific as other posters have pointed out, there's no justification in my mind for this doodle.

I hate socialism and love America, but can we restrict politics to subreddits that are designed for politics?

I don't see how a post extremely relevant to Google (this is the image they are putting out there for the public to see on their homepage), that happens to be about a controversial figure, is political? If anything, Google made it political by choosing to honor this person. I don't think acknowledging that Osama and Mao Zedong are terrible people is restricted by one's political views.
