Mourinho has been heavily tipped to replace Van Gaal at Old Trafford at the end of the season.

The Dutchman has struggled at United this term, with the club missing out on a top-four spot and now facing a crucial trip to Wembley on Saturday.

United need to win against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final to clinch a spot in next season’s Europa League.

The Red Devil's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward looked set to decide Van Gaal’s future after the final.

But now the Sun claim he has already made up his mind and will offer Van Gaal a director of football role at the club to allow Mourinho to take over.

Van Gaal remains popular with Woodward, but the United chief has now apparently accepted their needs to be a change in management.

Mourinho, who has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea back in December, is good friends with Van Gaal after working with the Dutchman at Barcelona.
