ITT: "these men look like apes/monkeys" "wow, just looking at this reminds me of our primate ancestors" "sheesh i'm not racist it's just that these people look more like monkeys than i do"

fuck outta here. downvote if you want, you're being racist. stop saying black people look like monkeys or apes. even if you think they do, maybe just don't say it, given the history? no? ok go on telling yourselves you're not being racist.

Whoa. You're essentially admitting that it's true while insisting we must pretend it's not true. "Don't you dare say it! We all see it, but you must pretend not to, because we've all seen what happens when people acknowledge the facts!"

Jesus.

I can't wait for modern, activism-happy "journalism" to finish dying off so we can start describing our world in accurate terms without worrying about becoming a victim of a national shaming campaign.

Maybe it's primarily due to the lighting in the photo, but no one—not one person—could honestly disagree that the two oldest men look like chimpanzees. It doesn't say anything about their intelligence, but those two men look far more simian than any white people.

Noone has said you have to pretend it's not true. People are saying you don't always have to open your fucking mouth

It's called manners. Perhaps your parents never told you about it

Fuck manners. Freedom of Speech, read your first amendment.

unless you don't live in the US, but there might be a similar law out there for others

Noone is disputing your right. It's a completely different topic of conversation

You said that.

I'm not suggesting anyone walk over to those men and tell them, "Hey, you're chimpanzees!". That would be mean.

But enforcing manners on every discussion about our world—including discussions about science and math—leads to quasi-religion and tyranny.

For example, when Google's image recognition algorithm categorized a black woman as a gorilla, the responses from those in positions of power were extremely dishonest, misleading, over-emotional, and political.

The official reason for the miscategorization quickly become "a lack of diversity in Silicon Valley". Those in power—primarily Jewish white people—assured everyone they'd hire fewer white developers (but they wouldn't give up their own jobs), because black developers would have trained the algorithm on more black faces.

Because of "manners", they couldn't mention the following key facts:

  1. The woman looked more like a gorilla than the typical non-black person. Sure, the algorithm clearly made a mistake, but these algorithms make mistakes all the time, particularly when objects look similar from certain angles! But trying to temper the drama would have been bad manners, so this went unmentioned.
  2. The algorithm was clearly, undoubtably trained using millions of photos of black people—otherwise, it wouldn't have recognized them as humans at all. This statement applies to anything the algorithm can categorize, including white people.
  3. The more time you spend training the algorithm on black people, the less time you spend training the algorithm on anything else. Devoting more time and energy to black people would be a political decision—"we'd rather our algorithm LITERALLY NEVER miscategorize a black person than have our algorithm be better at categorizing the rest of the world!"

"Lol he look like a monkey" is not science.

Except that I'm not "admitting" anything. Nice try, though. I said if SOMEONE thinks they look simian, maybe they could keep it to themselves out of respect to the extensive history of white folks justifying horrific treatment of Africans based on perceiving their features as ape-like and thus, less human. I dunno who said anything about journalism, but I'm not a journalist and this isn't a news article. Maybe you're different, but I view posting on sites like as akin to speaking loudly in a crowded room. I'd wager dollars to donuts you wouldn't talk about how simian that guy is with some black folks standing there, no matter what you might claim from behind your computer screen.

I also like how just because you see him as simian, everyone else in the world must, too. You think his friends and family would be like, "yknow you're right, great grandad DOES look like an ape!" There's a comment in this thread about features unfamiliar to you being perceived as more ape-like, which for a lot of Reddit would explain why they see apes when they see black folks.

Sorry I hurt your feelings, though.

If you don't want people to be able to discuss impolite facts on an online message board, where should people be allowed to discuss them? Stop trying to suppress everyone's speech to protect the feelings of black people (and only black people—I doubt you've ever complained about a black celebrity demeaning the bodies of white people).

It's just... weird. And kinda gross.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting anyone walk over to those men and tell them, "Hey, you're chimpanzees!". That would be mean.

Observation from a half-black guy: great grandfather straight up looks like a chimp. Its not fucking racist to say that resemblance is clear in this photo, its general observation. Nobody is saying that these the older guys look like chimps because they're black or anything to do with race being connected to primate appearances. The resemblance is undeniable here. You can take my downvote for being such an instigator.

alright and i guess all those hundreds of years when white folks were calling black folks chimps and using their skull shape and features to justify classifying black folks as some sort of subspecies of human, or intermediary stage between monkeys and humans....those folks weren't being racist, either! cuz hey guys, they really do look like monkeys, amirite?!?

in before "nobody on reddit did any of those things you mentioned, we're just talking about this one picture." as if this isn't how biases are constructed and maintained.

I just pointed out that nobody here is saying that black people look like chimps, everyone is saying the guy's resemblance to chimps in this photo is remarkable. It doesn't have anything to do with race if people are saying that a dude who looks like a chimp, looks like a chimp.

Trying to classify a race of people as sub-human primates and saying a dude in a photo bares striking similarities to a chimp are two different things. Its up to you if you want to go ahead and slide down that slope and make the two one and the same.

Reddit definitely has some racist tendencies, unspoken beliefs and groups that it needs to address, but they're not here in this thread. Im sure your carrying on will definitely change that though and then you can pat yourself on the back for calling out bigotry when prophecy fulfills itself.

Right cuz no one from stormfront or the klan goes to any other subreddits

Surprisingly enough, I don't actually feel great when a bunch of strangers call me mentally retarded and tell me that they wish that I would die. Sometimes people just have opinions that are different than yours, and they're not "carrying on" to garner some sense of false superiority. You mentioned the slippery slope, my point was only that in plenty of instances, behaviors or comments that folks may think are harmless are really not, and "black man looks like an ape" is most certainly charged with history and context, whether anyone here wants to admit it or not.

You chose your battles, dude.

I have never come across someone so mentally retarded on reddit. People here are saying that they look chimps because of the great grandfathers skull/jaw shape, which is clearly different from over 99.9% of the modern world here today. Not one person has mentioned the black race or blacks being a subspecies yet, what the fuck is wrong with you?

Temper, temper. It's telling how shrilly everybody is reacting. Hit dogs will holler, I suppose...

We all got that family member that looks like a Chimp bro.

Been gleaning through this comment section, can't find an posts saying "black people look like monkeys"

Avoiding what some people have done and straight up insulting you, I will say that you are the one making the connection between the chimpanzee-featured-faces and their skin tone, not the other commenters.

Yes there was history with black people and how we have accused them of being sub-human due to a small group among them having features that resemble our ancestors. No that does not mean that is why they are making that connection now.

There IS racism in the world, but this is simple observation. If I saw a white man who looked like a chimp in a photo like this, I would agree that he did in fact look like a chimp. The race is beside the point here.

is it still racist if my screen brightness is turned up real high, so the guys are white af?

profound stuff. checkmate, libtards.

i was actually curious. gosh darn it! bested by social justice once again! :(

you poor thing.

edit: and to clarify, you were really curious whether a statement about black people that could be considered racist was still racist if you changed your copy of the photo of the black people (who are still black regardless of what you do to the contrast with your copy of the photo) to make them white-skinned? really?
