He doesn't think or act quickly enough to play as a midfielder. Booming balls are the least of what a proper midfielder does.

I think right now it kind of works for us because we're lacking balls forward but long term a proper midfielder would be preferred.

I think that's an empty statement. There are a lot of things that go into making a midfielder.. Sure his first touch has been poor as of late, but to just say he lacks the intelligence to act quickly is wrong.

When Rooney used to be in that trio of Ronaldo, Tevez, and himself, did Rooney have time to sit and not act quickly? Of course not, he didn't become slower in the head, just his legs have gone. He has to be given a fair chance to embrace this role. He can potentially do it for at least another 4 years.

The more he plays in the midfield the more he can learn. I think Rooney has accepted now that he can't cut it as a striker anymore, and I can see him changing his game if he still has any ambition to play past his current contract.

It's been 3-4 games mostly against sides with nothing to play for.

Way too early to lay all our hopes on him being this great midfielder

People are wary because he's played midfield a lot before and it's never really worked. Since his injury he's been great in midfield. He's been our best player even when we lose.

But he still has some deficiencies. I see, over the last 2-3 games, that he's been making up for his poor touch by doing the 'let the ball roll across the body, then go into it and turn it the other way' thing that Herrera loves to do, and that has certainly helped him. That isn't so easy to do if you're pressed well, and I'm still unsure of his ability to get a good pass out under pressure.

I'd like him to start CM for the Euros because I don't think the likes of Henderson have ever shown more in CM than Rooney has over the last few games.

He often played earlier out of necessity and did a decent but unremarkable job. I see what you mean with his first touch and turning lately. I think he did well against Leicester and West Ham, was one of our best players in both games, though people said he'd struggle with their pressing. I also don't get the criticism because of the limited options we have- I don't really see other midfielders playing better than Rooney even though he's not a natural there.

I'm not sure about the Euros..he has more of a spark than Milner/Henderson but he also plays quite well for England as a striker..but Kane and Vardy are also in such good form, so that's a tough call.

I think people overrate Rooney in midfield. Sure, he's good in a game like yesterday, when the opponent basically doesn't leave own half, and Roo has all the time and space in the world to operate, but I think he would be destroyed in midfield if we'd play a top team.

Rooney at this point has to accept he is most effective in the midfield. What he does in the midfield is that it allows him to find his pockets of space and use his vision to impact the game with his high range of passing. Not to mention, he's a goal scoring threat, something you can't take away from being an effective midfielder.

He's only going to get better the more he plays in that position, I think he'll get a fair shot to reinvent himself, and I think he'll take it. He's a smart footballer with the right skill set.

I can see Rooney banging in at least 10 more goals from the center of the park next season, he reminds me a bit of Frank Lampard when he plays deeper.
