Just out of interest, I wanted to see what would happen given various different results tonight, just because I hate myself and shit posting is my life. Interesting permutation is at the end...
Lose
If we lost, we stay in 6th. Goal difference doesn't come in to it. We could lose by 100 goals and stay in 6th. This is because we're currently equal on points with Southampton but our goal difference is six goals worse. SMH.
Draw
If we draw, we move up to 5th, regardless of the number of goals in the draw. We'll be one point ahead of Southampton in this scenario. Rejoice.
Win
So a realistic win has us finishing 5th, three points clear of Southampton, equal on points with City.
City's goal difference is currently 18 better than ours, meaning we need to win by 19 clear goals to go above them. The highest scoring game in premier league history had 11 goals, and finished 7 - 4 between Portsmouth and Reading in 2007. The biggest winning margin was US! We put 9 past Ipswich in 1995 without reply. We'd need to more than double that tonight to overtake City. The biggest victory of all time was 149 - 0, with AS Adema beating SO l'Emyrne in 2002. We'd comfortably move past City if we scored that many, and post a record goal difference and goals scored in the process (in addition to smashing a whole host of other records). BUT, that was a thrown game, with the losing team throwing it in protest at refereeing decisions(!) meaning that the biggest recognised win in a competitive game was Arbroath 36 - 0 Bon Accord 1885. Again, this result would move us above City.
Where it gets interesting is if we win with a score of exactly 25 - 7. If this happened we'd have the same goal difference as City, in addition to having the same number of goals scored and conceded. If this happened, there'd be a play off for fourth place between ourselves and City. This is the result I think we all want.
