why /u/qgyh2 , he isn't even Canadian.

This is fucked.

Edit: This has gotta be a joke, all the top mods aren't even Canadian, or even active lmao.

He mods 121+ subs...... totally nothing nefarious going on here.... I bet it's a lobbying firm or pr agency. This way they can take shit down all over reddit if it speaks negative about their clients.

He squats on a number of subreddits, and with the somewhat dysfunctional moderator system, as long as he comments every six months (?) none of the other mods can remove him.

It's three months, and it has to be total inactivity. If he mod approves one post, nobody sees it but it still counts.

he comments every six months

Doesn't even have to comment, only be active in some way on the site, which the admins are somewhat ambiguous about, but I'm guessing that means logged in and browsing.

Do you remember "test post please ignore?" That was qgyh2. No conspiracy, dude just had some reddit celebrity for a minute and parlayed it into becoming mod like everywhere.

He actually created a lot of the original subreddits. But in doing that he just left them to others who followed while still retaining the top mod status.

This is fairly serious issue for Reddit in general, which has been going on for years; a small number of people have been seeking out mod powers over dozens or even hundreds of popular subs. Their intent varies but it's rarely benevolent.

I don't know what can/should be done, but I can at least recognize that it's become a problem.

What kind of conspiracy theory is that?

[–]Bricka_Bracka [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

Not even a theory. Just an evaluation of some information.

[–]chaobreakerManitoba [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

What information? Where does one put two and two and think hmm of course the /r/Canada mods had Chinese investing firms working in secret to quell discontent all this time.

[–]Bricka_Bracka [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

You said chinese, nobody else. the guy just said

I bet it's a lobbying firm or pr agency. This way they can take shit down all over reddit if it speaks negative about their clients.

It's just his evaluation of the info - the account mods 121 subs. Of course it's not a regular engaged moderator member of a community. That's easy to see. Who else might have an interest in monitoring that many subs?

Probably a PR firm or something else.

It's not a conspiracy. It's just looking at the information and going "Huh. Check that out."

/u/qgyh2 was one of reddit's earliest members of staff. He worked for them from roughly 07-10 but I'm not sure of the exact dates. I think his role was something like communities officer and based on that he became admin on a lot of the defaults.

Then when he left reddit he continued to admin a number of the defaults, from that point on as a volunteer. I believe he's still active on worldnews and a few of the bigger ones, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't do much on many of the smaller ones he got signed up to back when this was his job.

sounds very plausible. voat.co for when you want actual discussion, reddit.com for popular memes, cat pics and advertising.

[–]BANANARCHY [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

voat.co for when you want actual discussion

One of the top posts on Voat/v/all right now is comparing people on food stamps to animals.

Another post is about how the majority of Beyonce fans are "mostly white homo males," among a great comment thread in the same post about how African Americans are "defective jews" (this being a top post in v/news).

These are the discussions you're looking for? Really?

Like anything, the quality of a community is inversely exponential to the size of it. (I.E for every linear increase of members, the community gets exponentially shittier, eternal September and all that.)

So yes, large communities on voat are equally shit as large communities of reddit. But do me a favour, go to www.reddit.com/r/linux and www.voat.co/v/linux and then try to tell me that there is honestly no difference.

It's night and day.

It's just a guy who joined 8 years ago and managed to snag up all the good subreddits back when nobody was on the site. The stupid mod rules that reddit has in place allow for this kind of thing.

[–]turdovskiCanada [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

And if someone offered him hundreds of thousands of dollars which PR firms readily have to defend clients, I think he'd easily relinquish his account.
