Report: Newcastle considering move to appoint Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick

Newcastle are reportedly thinking about a move for Manchester United duo Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick.

According to a report from The Mirror, Newcastle are considering a stunning move to appoint Manchester United duo Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick as their new managerial team.

The Magpies could lose their current manager Rafael Benitez, as having been relegated to the Championship, Spanish boss Benitez can leave the club thanks to a break clause in his contract.

Talks are ongoing between Newcastle and Benitez, with owner Mike Ashley desperately trying to keep him at St. James' Park, but with such a huge reputation, the Spaniard may not fancy managing in the second tier.

Newcastle will be looking at alternatives, and The Mirror report that whilst Neil Warnock is an option for the Magpies, so are Manchester United's Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick.

Giggs, 42, has been working as Louis van Gaal's assistant at Old Trafford since 2014, but looks unlikely to win the manager's job if Van Gaal leaves United this summer, making it possible that the Welshman moves on to try and become a manager in his own right elsewhere.

Meanwhile, 34-year-old midfielder Carrick is out of contract with United this summer and may look to move into coaching - something which could be appealing to Newcastle, given that he's a Newcastle-born player and even grew up supporting the Magpies.

It's now claimed that Newcastle could be tempted to make a move to appoint Giggs as manager and Carrick as a player/coach, in a move which would stun Magpies fans who may feel that experience is needed in the Championship rather than two inexperienced, untried rookie coaches.
