This year i have noticed an increasing intolerance towards other deviate opinions. Putting people in camps shutting down opinions before hand (apologists etc.). Creating narratives that have no actual truth and are quite frankly on a idiotic level, downvoting people who actually come up with actual facts but dont dont fit the narrative. Upvoting solely because its what people want to hear. Calling out individual users and attacking them. This sub has become so toxic its unbearable. I been a long time lurker before i joined here and it was because i thought this sub was open to discussions, intent on being factual and respectful to other views.

Posts that contain no substance whatsoever get massively upvoted when quality or at least contain actual football discussions hardly get any attention or discussion at all.

Is this the sub you trying to aspire to?

to mean that we should accept downvoting is a mechanic for registering assent/dissent.

I think there are two issues being conflated here. One is the balance of good/inane content on this sub. I actually think that's improving significantly (although summer is just around the corner).*

The other is this "downvote if you disagree" mentality. It's a reddit-wide problem but I bet if you review the comments below threshold on this subreddit there are a tonne which are just people innocently offering their opinions about e.g. Blind. I got downvoted to oblivion a few weeks ago when I matter-of-factly suggested that I disagreed with a guy who said Blind was "future captain material".

* (Genuinely, as one of the more vocal critics of /new I honestly think it has improved really dramatically in the last couple months - so thanks!)

And we're probably going to have some plans for this summer beyond simple transfer threads. I would also be amazed if /u/Pedantic_Pat didn't have something up his sleeve too.

And yeah, I have seen some people get blasted for their views (and it's happened to myself several times as well).

Do you think the mods are gods or something? They can't change how people behave or think, the best they can do is keep the sub clean, remove shit that doesn't belong and if someone goes over the top, ban them. If they do anymore a lot more people will start crying about censorship and rightly so. Its a fine line.

We never remove a unique opinion piece. The only time we remove opinion pieces is if there is a clear agenda to it (ie; come read my blog) or if it's merely repeating the same thing said 100 times in other threads, or in threads of their own.

Believe me, the temptation to remove some things is very tempting, but we rely on yourselves to control the new queue more than us.

Mod here. Please could you link to any examples? We are 100% for open discussions and quality content, but as mods there is not much we can do to expose said posts to more views.

Almost always if there is ever a post that has "[Discussion]" in the title, is unique and does promote clear and quality content then we will always "approve" the post so that it does not get caught up in the spam filter, get vote brigaded or whatever.

I'd rather avoid cross-sub wars, but I've been invited to mod a couple of sub-reddits that seemed to be controlled by the owners of a tech product, or had a PR guy on the inside that was actively trying to pay off mods.

Shout-out to /r/vive though. There mods have publicly named and shamed a HTC PR rep for trying to bribe their mods and printed the emails/modmails.

Just to expand on /u/spoofex's comment, we've actually had people/companies approach us before asking if we can promote their products/merchandise/website/YouTube channel in exchange for money, but ultimately that's not why we do this.

We do this because we love United and it's the best community I've ever been apart of.

Mods have let this happen. I blame them. Sub has actually gone to pot.

OK. Because over the past 12 months you garnered a reputation for a 'holier than thou' attitude towards other users. To be fair, you do offer valid opinions and ideas at times, but you also have a habit of calling people out as 'idiots'. You're also one of the people who seems obsessed with talking about how bad the users of the sub are, rather than just getting on with it, which means that you are a part of the problem at the same time as slagging off the people here.

The comment is gone, because we can't police every single thread at all times, use the report button if you think there's something there that should be reviewed by us.

We don't actually control the eb and flow of opinions, that's all on you as users. We merely try to guide them into more controlled paths so that everyone talks about something in one place rather than scattergun posts splitting the masses.

I also love how people call a place 'toxic'. This subreddit is not toxic. There's conflicting opinions all the time, constantly uplifting stories about peoples experiences with the club, and general excitement about signings every summer and winter, as well as elation when players we love and respect succeed. Sure, there's always going to be differences of opinions that winds up with some utter mongs going too far, and that's where we step in and remove comments or in more serious cases, ban users.

It also takes 20 seconds at looking at your post history to see the only reason you've made this post is because you've been downvoted today for overly combative and bitter comments that offer nothing other than trying to put down the very people that you're hear to talk to.

So the question isn't is this the sort of place we want, but is it the sort of place you want it to be? Because shitty comments and crap posts calling out users for being 'toxic' is more of a problem than the problem you seem to be portraying.

I think anything complaining about a subreddit is a shit post by very definition. That's not to say people can't make suggestions on ways to improve a subreddit but complaining achieves nothing.

I mean, it's a forum for Christ's sake, you either like it or you piss off. Not only that but OP has described a reddit problem not a mod problem.

Two recommendations, OP:

  1. If your issue is with the mods, use the function on the sidebar that allows you to contact the mods directly. Many of us are of the opinion that the mods in this subreddit do a fantastic job. As a result, a post like this will often be immediately downvoted - as it looks like you're calling the mods out on not handling things well. If you have suggestions, and message them privately, I guarantee they'll consider it and get back to you (I've done it myself - they're good people).

  2. If your issue is with the subreddit - say so (don't disguise it by calling the mods out), and rather than simply highlighting the negative, offer a solution!

That's my 10 cents (or quid, for you island blokes).

We all have our problems with some of the stuff on this sub. Christ, the number of times some of us have moaned about kit pictures, baby pictures, and stuff is unbelievable. The mods do their work and do it well.

It can't be perfect. Just ignore it all if you are that bothered by it. There's no need to make a post about it. If there was, this sub would be full of posts by us complaining about someone posting something rubbish.

EDIT: And if you're moaning now, I'd suggest not coming here during the summer when all the "who shall I get on my shirt" posts start.
