It must be bad but "worse than slavery" is a fucken terrible choice of words.

A sick slave would have been cared for by his owner -- the loss of a slave being a considerable cost. And that's the point: migrant workers don't get health care if a workplace injury causes them to be unable to work. The argument is that employers should have to provide for disability benefits and health care insurance -- same as they'd have to do if they were hiring Canadians -- and further that the law should be adjusted to allow for said health care.

If all of a sudden foreign workers aren't affordable anymore, weeeellll then, maybe we've found what the real problem is.

Slaves argued that allowing blacks to enjoy free market capitalism was worse than slavery because they would get low wages and would have an overall worse life because of it. With slavery you got room and board covered. People have been arguing in favor of slavery for some time.

Honestly I would kill for one of those huts. I am not very picky. I just want a place of my own.

I was going to say, not to defend slavery, there were a lot of white families that didn't even have shacks. If you were white, no one provided for you. Not everyone was a wealth land owner that could afford an army of slaves. Most worked their arse off for pennies they were swindled out of and/or died in the street, and no one gave two f's about them, even to this day. Especially if they were Irish.

Hell even going back 50 years ago, my father has five brothers and two sisters and they all lived in a two bedroom apartment. My grandfather was a factory worker and earned enough to get by, but there were times they went days without food because starving with a roof over their heads, even if it was a crappy roof, was better than being on the street and starving.

At the very least slaves were seen as property and somewhat taken care of. You don't buy a horse, then let it starve or freeze. They might have only been provided the bare minimum and some were treated badly, but at least they had the bare minimum.

As someone who spent a year (years ago) sleeping next to a dumpster behind my high school and eating out of garbage cans, I can say I would have been ecstatic to have a guaranteed room and even a minimum amount of slop to eat.

Back in slavery days, at least slaveowners had to house, feed and care for their slaves. In a lot of ways...this is worse.

EDIT: Spotted the TFW users. I realize that, in a lot of ways, slavery is worse too...but the TFW program is very exploitive and should be terminated. This is a race to the bottom.

Yes, but he was also allowed to physically beat them as discipline.

I think that's worse than neglectful treatment.

Not that either should be acceptable to anyone.

If one got too injured they also had the right to shoot / murder them.

Good thing we didn't reelect Harper then...looked like that was on the horizon for that bunch.

You're forgetting the rape, beatings, destruction of the family unit. This is clearly not worse.

[–]CndConnection [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Yeah except for the whole...you still have your freedom and can't be killed/raped/harmed by your employer at their leisure.

Like I get it, it's awful. I'm not trying to say the situation ain't bad or unacceptable.

Oh you know except for the fact that slaves were regularly beaten, killed, raped, sold to be away from their families, had no freedom whatsoever, had no compensation and in many places died so often that slaves had to be imported because the slaves on location didn't live long enough to sustain a slave population by having kids.

Oh please, this is not worse. You are massively whitewashing what being a slave was like.
