I saw Captain America this weekend! I haven't seen any other Captain America movies, so I didn't really know what was going on, but I got the gist of it. SPOILERS AHEAD!

I thought there should have been more politics in it. It seemed to me that there was a brief discussion about signing the accords (which, why should the Avengers have to sign it? They're not a member of the UN. They don't get to sign treaties or conventions.), a punching scene, and then everyone was more or less friends again. The whole "civil war" seemed to have no real point, other than to make the Captain America franchise more interesting by having Iron Man and Spiderman in it. I found Black Panther to be kind of uncomfortable, especially with the "tribal" music that played every time he's on screen (as if to say that an African can't be a real superhero like other superheroes)(also, why is it that when I google "black panther," only comic book characters come up? Real panthers feel left out.)(Marvel's doing a Black Panther movie? Oh god.), but I do appreciate that Marvel does seem to be diversifying their superhero lineup away from just white guys. Even if the non-white guys are supporting characters.

I also think Captain America is one of the world's most boring superheroes. He doesn't seem to have a personality other than "look at me, I'm defying the UN because I'm America!" I also kind of like the irony of picking the blonde-haired, blue-eyed guy to beat up Hitler. If you're going to wipe out Hitler, why do it with the guy that most typifies Hitler's own rhetoric?

Suffice to say, I enjoyed the movie. The punching was fun. It should have had more punching. It was exactly what I expect and want from my Marvel movie. Creative punching with an attempt at a story that's just there to hold the punching together. It was fun.

Actually the character Black Panther precedes the Black Panther Movement by a few year. They both got their name by a tank division in WW2, I think.

Also, Disney-Marvel tries to accurately stay away from anything explicitly political. They don't even dare using Nazis, they call them Hydra and go on.

Also also

Creative punching with an attempt at a story that's just there to hold the punching together.

have you seen The Avengers? That's it, basically. Also Mad Max Fury Road, but I think you could've already seen that one.

I did see the first Avengers, but this one was the first Marvel movie I've seen since then. They're not really my cup of tea because they're...uh...plot-light. And while I can appreciate Marvel staying away from real world politics, I think you can have more of a discussion of the ramifications of regulation and accepting responsibility as a philosophical debate without associating it with real-world politics. Equally, when you involve the UN and have Captain America defy them for what he's pretty sure is the right thing to do, I can't help but feel that there's a political statement in that, whether Marvel intends it or not.

As for Black Panther, it's not the movement that's on my mind. To be honest, I wasn't entirely clear on the character's name until halfway through the movie, and even then, I can recognise that more than one group can use the animal's imagery. My concern is the portrayal of an explicitly African character. As I said in another post, Africa and its portrayal in film is something that matters to me, and while I think Marvel did an okay job with the character in making him independent and capable, I also think about how his shots were accompanied by "exotic" music, and how this has an othering effect. When musical cues and the like do something like that, they're establishing that this character is different from the other heroes, and to be quite honest, his main difference seems to be that he's African and the rest are not. It's that othering that made me uncomfortable, not the name itself.

Spoilers!

I joked with friends after the movie that MCU finally made independent minorities cannon. I enjoyed that the Black Panther had his own goals and arch, and wasn't just a tag team like Falcon and War Machine. The tribalness of the Black Panther feels really 80s though, and I know it's just using the comics, but this is how we get "Africa is uncultured/mud huts". At least their home country is shown as advanced. Excited for his movie actually. That suit is awesome.

As for the rest, really enjoyed the movie! I liked that they didn't really team up to fight one bad guy and then shake hands afterwards. The problem I have is that the end doesn't really give you anything.

"So yeah we fought and you won but ur cool and I'm cool and these rules are still in place and you're a vigilante but it's cool cause we had a really touching fight scene with me you and the guy who killed my mum"

I want to watch it again though! I loved Antman and Spiderman. I feel it's the first time Tony stark has had a lasting character change. It was a good movie!

Oh, I definitely appreciated that Wakanda was shown as being an advanced place, at least a little. The fact that they don't seem to have cities, but rather, a hidden jungle base is uncomfortable again, but it's something, which is more than I expected. I'm leery of the movie because Hollywood never really knows how to portray Africa, and it's the sort of thing that matters to me, but it's also wrong to judge the movie before it comes out. We'll just have to see how it looks.

And yeah, I definitely didn't like the ending. It felt to me like it was the canon being unwilling to commit to the idea of breaking up the Avengers over ideological differences. Hell, it wasn't even really over ideological differences. If the Winter Soldier had actually done the bombing, I think it would have been a more interesting movie, because then you would have to deal with ideological differences instead of there being a big shadowy bad that could be beaten up.

I love the mechanic of picking your empire traits in the beginning. It's nice going "oh this game I'm gonna be a fanatic spiritualist and want to do holy wars with enslaving anyone who gets too annoying." Love the surface building mechanic too. There's always something to improve.

Agreed, the role playing is amazing. My friend is trying to eliminate all non-fungke life. I also love the much more reasonable tech as well.
