It honestly doesn't make sense to me why people who consider themselves "gamers" don't understand that something that makes the game feel better makes the game itself better.

God damn newbies.

You do not miss most things that you are not used to. When you are a VR user in 10 years you cannot imagine gaming on a screen on 1080p with 60fps. Now it is acceptable. In 5 years it will be acceptable for the console players. In 20 years it won't be even for them.

I don't know man, 60 FPS was standard on PC for decades and the consoles can't seem to ever ketchup with our mustard race. All they've done is raise their resolution standards from 360p-480p to 720p-900p in the past decade.

60fps was the standard on console once upon a time. Better times.

So they've gone backwards over the years! What on earth are they thinking?

[–]Colonel_MusKappa_II 5ポイント6ポイント  (2子コメント)

Haha yeah it's sad. At first it was because 3D rendering was really a massive leap in processing requirement, so they kinda went the route of 25-30fps in games, and sadly that left a damaging legacy of people thinking that's an acceptable framerate for any type of game.

It's also a symptom of flashy screenshots from E3 demos and reveals garnering more attention than how the game actually plays, it's all about those bullshots at 15fps selling your game to the masses, and consequently the final games will often sacrifice playability for visual effects.

Even 20fps in Ocarina of Time.

shudder

It was 17fps in the PAL version

ketchup with our mustard race.

Sounds about right!

I think it's a bit of an exaggeration to say 60 fps has been "standard" for decades. A decade is mayybe close, but decades isn't. Although competitive FPS gamers were typical early adopters, even in early competitive scene of QW and CS a lot of people still ran with low fps and by most non-competitive gamers 20-30 fps was widely considered a decent fps even for first person shooters. I think the pursuit of higher FPS has only become more mainstream recently (ie. in last <10 years)

And in a way I understand that, I can see how eg. jumping from 800x600 to 1280x960 is more important from many than 30 vs 60 fps... however with modern resolutions of 1080p+ increasing resolution has less and less impact on graphical fidelity, making smooth framerates a higher priority.

I remember gpu game benchmarks in 2000s were all well above 100fps, check radeon 9700 and nvidia equivalent benchmarks

yep - at hte point now where I'll drop down to medium or low in games just to keep above 90 on a 144hz monitor. Anything below feels choppy and the input lag is very noticeable.

I do the same. framerate over graphical fidelity every day.

It's like saying, "I love cars, but I don't understand why anyone would get a manual".

[–]Gamiac 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

At least in that case it's possible to not understand the differences between automatic and manual and why one would want a manual car.

The difference between 30 and 60 is pretty clearly obvious compared to that.

I'll be honest, I cant feel the difference between 30/60

but thats because I have never had 60 for a game I'v played at 30 before (due to hardware constraints because my only two computers so far have been prebuilts that were bought with no real knowledge asside from a friend saying 'its okay')

well, i also can't differentiate 30 and 60 fps if what i played it sprites game, but on 3d games where the environment and object move around, fps really matter. I played assassin creed 2 on my laptop years ago, back then i don't understand i'm getting 15-20 fps, all i know is the control feel very heavy and combat is not really responsive, i always get motion sickness after an hour or so but the game is still playable to me. Today, i can't even play 45fps, i'll sacrifice everything for that smooth 60fps (i hope i don't ever see 144hz or my wallet will suffer even worse).
