I think the real news here is the bot getting gold.

What does a bot even do with gold.

It goes and does bot things in the gilded lounge.

so its programmed to take the first sentence of the first 3 paragraphs?

Real answer: I think it was just confused by the format of this article.

So it would seem to the untrained eye. In reality, the bot was able to gather that this is a story about a dumb singing contest.

That may be how it works! If so it's surprisingly accurate.

I just looked at a few other posts and I'd say you're right, that does seem to be the trend.

I wonder if in journalism you want to say the most useful information at the start to hook readers and this bot just exploits that.

this. is. the. best. summary. /u/bitofnewsbot. ever. compiled.

Thanks! This is really interesting! Especially the deviation between the two votes, and where the deviation is highest.

UK gave France no points.

France gave UK no points.

I'm glad we're still friends

I find it hilarious that if it was down to just the televote we would have given 12 points to Poland's entry.

Same reason Germany usually gives 10-12 points to turkey.

Well, the french song was ... garbage imo. There's a lot of good music coming from France and that song wasn't part of that.

France only got like 2 points.

I actually really liked the french song.

Now I'm sad she didn't have flowers in her hair for her performance.

I'm dying to know what Russia broadcasted when Austria won, after their censoring of the song when it went out..

Here are comments from Russian artists (many of whom are closeted gay) after the show ended:

This is the end of Europe

We shouldn't have liberated Austria

This victory - a diagnosis

This is a requiem for the European Union and the traditional values

It's hellfire, this fire apocalypse

There's not just her, there are all young bearded!

Our girls won anyway!

... Delirium tremens!

We're just outraged!

In Europe - diarrhea with blood and foam

also, Austria would get 8(!!!) points from Russia if not for homophobic judges: http://www.eurovision.tv/page/results?event=1893&voter=RU

so there is still hope...

Can you please explain how this works and why 8 is the magic number? i didnt watch the eurovision this year.

That means it was the 3rd favourite song chosen by Russian TV viewers.

Source please?

Edit: watched the whole thing, it got more reasonable later on. How the fuck does Verka become the voice of reason? Like, we have so many cross dressers in Russia in the show business, how does everyone fucking forget?

Verka was always the best!

Is this downvoted by Russians or those who don't speak russian?

Just for some background about her.

She is an artificial character played by the gay man Tom Neuwirth.

He has explicitly stated, that he does not identify as female, though he thinks of Conchita as a separate, albeit artificial, female person.

Tom has been a part of the Austrian drag scene for quite some time, and his character Conchita has risen to prominence in 2011, when she participated in an Austrian casting show (with pretty heavy media coverage and public discussions here in Austria).

The name Conchita Wurst roughly translates as Pussy (and I don't mean cat) Sausage (here I do really mean 'sausage', though there is the same double entendre in German, and it furthermore translates as 'never mind').

She's a really interesting queer character, and Tom performs her absolutely amazingly.

Oh her song is boring by the way, but who cares ;)

And another crosspost, I can barely keep up :)

Oh she's an Austrian Babsan.

Additional detail - at least imho - he's got an absolutely brilliant voice, which fits the role and the song. It's not camp, or over-the-top, or terrible. Great singing voice.

Finally, my confusion is over.

I am from Russia. And I'm glad to see that, despite the propaganda of homophobia in the country over the past few years, the audience put Austria on the 3rd place: http://www.eurovision.tv/page/results?event=1893&voter=RU

The first two places we gave our neighbors predictable.

I am also glad disapproving noise at the mention of Russia. Our politicians - the nationalists was very unpleasant. It is very good :)

Also notable:

For comparison, here is how hatred looks like:

  • Azerbaijan ranking Armenia: jury 25th , people 25th

that's hilarious

Results are the best part of this stupid contest. They are a great indicator of international relations in europe :D

Applause and standing ovations for the russian people! I hope you can find the strength to transform your country into something that's envied by the rest of the world.

One could say that they sort of won.

They more or less asked people to vote for Austria with their lyrics, so you could argue they won a little.

Agree. I was so disappointed to see them score so low.

Teletubbies! ON SPEED!

I thought it had just the right mix of campy Eurovisionness and actually being a pretty good song.

Added to that, the idea of the song was really nice, and the lead singer looked like Rufus Hound and Teddy Roosevelt.

Question to (mostly) the Danes - what the HELL was that continuous Chinese reference stuff about? It went on and on and on, was quite embarrassing and - if you go for categories like that - full of non-PC stereotypes.

So... Wtf??? Was that some Danish in-joke that we all were not getting?

They kind of forgot to mention it, but this is the first time the contest has been broadcast live in China.

Live? I.e. in the middle of the night?

It was in the evening in Europe, so probably in the morning for China.

Well I know people who get up at 3am just to watch Cricket tournaments in New Zealand live here in the UK. So I can only assume that if something is streamed live people will watch it.

The hosts did mention it actually but only at the beginning of the show.

Dane here. I still have no clue what the China thing was about.

Us Danes have no idea what that joke was about. It was weird.

At least I didn't hear anyone say "Hashtag MILF" this year. That was really embarrassing last year.

I wondered this too. And also about the ladders. There was something unsettling about that performance.

According to Graham norton, doing the commentary on the BBC, in rehearsals the ladder bit was waaaay more elaborate and lsd-trippy. Apparently, they started out with all the ladder guys in strange costumes and the singing bloke on the ladder with bird feathers on his costume and a seagull on his head.

Graham said something along the lines of "count yourself lucky, this is the short and non-weird version" (roughly, from memory)

I found it rather typical that every country's spokesperson spoke english when giving points. EXCEPT France.

I figured since all the scores were being translated to French anyway, it was probably more appropriate for France to just give theirs in French and have it translated to English.

French is an official language of the Eurovision institution, the only language next to English

Personally I'm disappointed. I felt there were numerous songs which were better than the Austrian entry. I think a large part of the reason why Austria won was because of the fact that the entrant adopted a drag persona. This was opposed by various circles and led people to rally around her simply to prove those circles wrong. The Netherlands, Belarus, Armenia and Iceland had much better songs in my opinion.

I think it's not that unusual that a song wins that a lot of people thought wasn't the best one. It's always about the song and the performer, e.g. when Germany's Lena won some years ago a lot of people also thought that the song/performance was quite weak.

But personally I rather like the James-Bond-style song, and the singer has quite a good voice I thought, so the win is OK by me.

the winner is the one who gets either hyped beforehand like Lena or now this guy or an actual good song like 2 years ago Sweden. Don't know how i can fit in Danmarks win in this.

Overall this year left me disappointed. Last years there were several good songs and some funny performances. This year was boring in songs and performance only France and Iceland were kinda Eurovision quirky. UK deserved more too :/

i agree that sweden was really good, i think austrias performance was good too though.

I really liked Lena. I can't remember the other entries anymore, sadly.

If you're in it for the music, sure, you'll be disappointed. It's all about the spectacle.

One year guys in troll make-up, one year a guy with tits. It's like american idol, but twice as pretentious!

Pretentious!? That is not the word I'd use to describe Eurovision. Twice as camp, yes, but that's the exact opposite of pretentious.

No, see, it was extra pretentious this year because there were two songs involving cake.

Fucking pretentious hipsters and their cake...

Hey, Lordie's song was actually pretty cool!

*Lordi :) Just in case people want to google them.

That's the one, cheers :)

It's all about the spectacle.

And politics. Lots and lots of politics.

The trick is to be memorable while having a pretty good song, The top three all did something to stand out from the default fanfare. But when it comes to being memorable, a different type of song with a black and white backdrop are not comparable to a woman with a beard.

Personally I believe Austrian song was the best regardless of politics. There were several songs with good fresh melody but bad vocals and vice versa. This was the only one, that was excellent in both components. His striking freak looks were just a little bonus.

My wife and I are Ukrainian, and we have nothing against Tolmachev sisters (as they are not helping Russia to fight war against Ukraine), but to us they sounded rather bland tonight. I was not happy with Ukrainian performance either. I think the best song performer won tonight.

My Grandfather doubted about the moonlanding. But he sure won't believe this!

I thougt all the booing at Russia was a bit chilling.

Is it really surprising? Russia invaded another participant...

Sure, the artists weren't responsible, but that doesn't make Russian nationalism any less of a problem. If people want to protest it, why shouldn't they? Perhaps the people of Russia need to know how Europeans feel about their country and its actions. Perhaps they should know Putin is ruining Russia's image in Europe.

Also, given the anti-lgbt legislation recently passed in Russia and the fact that ESC is a big event in the gay communities, it's not a surprise at all.

Nail on head. This was why there was booing IMO . Not a surprise at all.

Wouldn't it be great if the next one was won by an openly gay Ukrainian group using only swear words as their lyrics?

Wow. That song was 7 years ahead of time. It would have been glorious earlier tonight.

Do you think they make that outfit in Lady Gaga's size?

The best way to incubate and grow Russian nationalism us to boo 17 year old Russian girls in a singing contest.

The best way to incubate and grow Ukrainian nationalism is to annex part of their country.

Ukraine just should have submitted their 2007 song again

Well it's not the girl's fault Russia went nuts. Imagine how these poor girls must've felt being boo'd for someone else's fault.

Actually, Russian tele-voters placed Austria in third place. Not everyone in Russia is as intolerable as you think.

Source: http://www.eurovision.tv/page/results?event=1893&voter=RU

Those girls just wanted to entertain people but they booed them and probably made them feel bad for something that should nothing to do with. And this happened in a SONG contest.

As many people already mentioned, why does this have to happen in a contest completely unrelated to politics? The hipocrisy is killing me with all this talk about tolerance.

Except the average person in Russia has fuck all to do with the struggle in Ukraine. People are simply ignorant if they think that they do. It is like saying that the average US citizen endorses drone strikes on innocents in the Middle East, just because that is what the government/army did.

Belarus gave Russia 12 points for what? Even I booed at that!

And Russia gave Belarus 12 points too.

It was my first time watching Eurovision from here in the states! Wish I was able to vote.
I liked Germany's song (and wish they had gotten a lot more points than they did) but I'm so happy for Austria and Conchita.. It was an incredible night.

Which stream did you watch it through? BBC with Graham Norton provided great banter, as is the case every year.

When the show surprised him in his booth, i lost it a bit, it seemed like he had no idea it was coming xD

I wish I'd watched it through a BBC stream. I watched it on the eurovision site, so there actually wasn't any commentary at all. :/

I can't imagine watching it like that D: Next year watch it on the BBC, Norton's commentary is very funny, not as funny as the previous guy we had (Terry Wogan) but still good!

I will have to do that. I love the Graham Norton show so I imagine this would be just as good.
Thanks for the advice. :)

Terry was bloody magic wasn't he. I like Graham too mind - good choice as a replacement I think as those were big shoes he had to step into.

At least the German commentary is awful so you were better off than me :).

I laughed when the German commentator said "Fucking hell!" in English when that firework went off in front of his cabin

I liked Germany's song

Germany here: thanks! I think our entry was good, it is catchy. But I guess the performance itself was too unimpressive/boring and you need to stand out.

Well, we had the best party in the background when Helene announced our points.

I would love to see how well a bearded transvestite would be received in a us song contest.

Huh. And I thought I was weird for listening to it back-to-back because it sounded like one of those awesome vocalized tracks from the Metal Gear Solid series.

You mean a bond song which is what mgs was going for right?

Exactly. Made me want to take my shirt off and climb a ladder.

lol Hitler must rotate in his grave .. 12 points from Israel for an Austrian transvestite :D

What I like most about this is that the Eurovision is seen by the relatively conservative countries in Eastern Europe too. They just have to deal with this.

I don't think the Polish entry and their, erm, butter-churning Madonnas with the big boobies, were "conservative".

You just don't see many Allo Allo references these days.

People these days don't know good comedy.

I was so disappointed that Poland didn't win.

You just wanted to see the performance again. dat butter churning

A fair few of them gave non-neglible points to Austria.

10 from Georgia, 8 from Ukraine.

I was really surprised. I mean, the statistics for these places are near Russia levels on the public acceptance front.

Ukraine sent a drag queen a few years ago and got second. Not too surprising.

And what statistics are those? Or just your personal perception?

The Russian broadcaster VGTRK has just exploded in its ever-present transphobia, with Zhirinovsky and other clowns proclaiming Apocalypse and death of Europe.

Russia submitted t.A.T.u. to the Eurovision in 2003 and they often pretended to be lesbians in their performances though I don't think they actually are.

Seriously, who the fuck are they to talk about "Gay Propaganda" or "The Children" when their most famous export is two fake lesbian school children?

That music video was never off the telly when I was a kid in England and I'm gay; shall I sue Russia for turning me gay with it's homosexual propaganda?

Russia also had t.A.T.u. singing their song "Not Gonna Get Us", accompanied by the Red Army Choir, when Russia hosted the Eurovision in 2009. In that song, they basically perform as two lesbians committing their love for one another. Apart from Lady GaGa's "Born This Way" I can't think of another mainstream song which was so explicitly pro-gay in the past 10 years at least.

well, lumping man-man and woman-woman relations under the same lgbt banner might be a thing here, but is that always the case? i don't see how intolerance of male homosexuality would automatically mean equal intolerance of female homosexuality in a society..

That depends, was Russian's any gay propaganda law more focused on anti-male homosexuality or both anti-male and female homosexuality.

not russian, no idea, but may not be a good indicator even if it was, uh, evenly split [not saying 'fair'...] on paper - selective reporting and enforcement etc. lots of laws in many countries notionally apply to everyone but end up only applied vigorously to particular groups [or individuals].

It's "Ya soshla s uma" song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QH-IE7Pu5Y&feature=kp

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jRWrrbIIzE - "Gay boy" song.

Good old times haha ) We recently discussed it in facebook, like hey remember 10 years ago things like that was possible, without all this idiots yelling around about "christian values", "morality", "insult to the feelings of random dumbasses or shills" etc.

But honestly there is reasons for all this prohibitions. Government trying to resolve domestic issues. It's complicated and my english suck to explain in details.

That was in 2003, now things a bit different.

and got criticized and reminded of tatu's success, seconds after he said that

Aside from the fact that she had a beard I would still have voted for her. It's a nice song.

Besides, what's wrong with making a political statement? The song festival has been political since the day it started and we might as well just come out and admit that.

For the lazy the song

Well good on you Austria and put another shrimp on the barbie!

Any other Americans confused about what this is and why there is a bearded woman on a stage?

Basically, Eurovision is a song contest where the majority of European countries participate in a song contest. It usually occurs over three to four nights each year, with European countries being ellegable to vote for which country has the best song.

For each night, prior to the Grand Final, 15 countries participate each night. At the end of each of said nights, 10 of the 15 countries are voted into the Final.

The most popular (aka most donating to the show) countries in Europe, along with the winning country of the previous years' Eurovision, move through to the next round. These countries include: Germany; the United Kingdom; Spain; Italy; and France (among others).

The country that wins the Grand Final hosts the show the next year. In this years' case, Denmark won last year, and have hosted it this year.

This post spoiled the ending, as it's broadcast here in Australia in about 5-7 hours time.

EDIT: Changed host country, added "(aka most donating to the show)".

EDIT 2: Added "Germany".

Those would be the most paying countries. They basicly sponsor the whole event and therefore don't have to go through the semi-finals.

The only country you forgot is Germany which is actually the biggest sponsor of the show.

It's so funny how Putin news are trying to hide pictures of him! They're really in panic. Bearded woman has never been so dangerous!

Although I felt bad for those Russian girls, I kinda enjoyed the booing whenever Russia got points

They sang very well, and it is sad that these beatiful ladies got boo'ed just because they are russian.

Sad that the Dutch got second, who would obviously have won, if the contest was about singing.

Sad for Conchita, who for the rest of her life will realise she only won because the people wanted to make a point, even though she didn't perform bad.

that summed up Eurovision 2014.

on to the next one

This is still the best eurovision winner.. Ever.

That was bullshit. The gimmick guy won. It's a song contest. Hungarian Drake was way better and a song I'd actually listen to, which is surprising for Eurovision. And now I hear it's not actually a trans person but just a character? Yup, gimmick bullshit and got the reaction it was looking for. Netherlands was pretty delightful to watch. Austria was just okay, didn't deserve to win at all.

Gah. Spoiler alert :c

Conchita winning is one hell of a statement to some European countries and also other areas of the world. Europe accepts people no matter how they come, even celebrate them in fact. The song was good, perhaps not the best, but the message that Austria winning has sent out is quite powerful

Rubbish, an achievement was a transsexual winning back in 1998 and she (Danna International) was like a real pop star who won with a cool song. And this here is nothing more than a gimmick with a boring song.

I think a lot of people forgot about Dana International. I don't really think this is a statement for Europe. I think it just won because the entire picture fitted. I hate the people who think that this is "Progressive" its not its just a song that won.

The Eurovision song contest has been nothing but a chance at making a political statement for as long as I can remember. It hasn't been about the music in a long ass time. It's unfortunate that the girls were the target in this case as they themselves have done nothing wrong, but they would be naive to think that they were in just another singing competition. They must have had SOME idea of the reaction they would receive.

I only found out the Eurovision song contest was on tonight a few hours ago. Just goes to show how few fucks are given about it these days.

Some years yes, I would agree that the voting gets very political. But as an example I don't see very many political influences for the Danish victory last year and the Swedish win before that.

Did they do anything to piss anyone off?

Oops, thought you meant the winner was based on political voting.

On the subject you mention, I doubt anyone was booing at the Russian girls, but at the Russian government who recently annexed and violated the territorial integrity of another country in the ESC.

When else would people in Europe be able to directly show to Russian people that they do not support what their government is doing in their name.

DAE remember that South Park episode with Mr Garrison and Mr Slave? Where they tried to be as gay as possible? This is Europe today.
