Renato Sanches-Joao Mario Theory (self.reddevils)

The media certainly enjoyed the Sanches to Bayern story, taking full advantage of questioning United's board. Although, there must be more to the story other than "Bayern beat United to Sanches". I believe the reports of extensively scouting him and seriously considering a transfer, but United must also have made the decision to not pursue the transfer. And I think that decision was made due in part to Joao Mario.

United have youthful squad, and it's time to inject it with a little more polish and experience. I'll admit I've only watched a couple Sporting games this season (and yes, a few youtube videos), but more so from what people who watch Primeira Liga say about Mario, he was the best midfielder in the league and is a highly rated workhorse. As I understand it, he's a CM but excelled as a right winger this season. That plugs two of our holes - right wing and midfield depth. United can get Mario for cheaper than Sanches, he's ready to play now while still being an up-and-coming player, and he fills an immediate hole in United's attack. Sanches' ceiling may be higher, but purchasing Mario could prove to be a shrewd transfer.

Why not both? Sanches is far from a sure thing, United may have satiated their risk appetite with Martial, and the squad is more in need of youthful experience than raw talent. Fielding another potential €80 mil, especially for a player who hasn't yet proven to consistently score/assist goals (2/0 this season in 24 appearances) might not be worth it. Don't get me wrong, Sanches might turn out to be a great player, and goals/assists isn't any measure of quality...but it usually is of transfer fees. Instead of matching or beating Bayern's massive offer and reaching once again, United may just have decided to pursue a cheaper, potentially better option that is ready to contribute now, and use the Sanches funds to fill more immediate holes. I can get on board with that.

I apologize for the rant...it's been a quiet Saturday night and I let my mind wander. What'd you guys think of the whole Sanches thing? Any players you want to see come in?

Side note - Mario sounds like a Mourinho type player. Maybe he could be United's versatile Willian?

The last thing we need now is a CM playing right wing. It's one of my main frustrations with van Gaal and his insistence on playing Mata RW. Granted Mata hasn't been lighting up the central midfield, but having a slow player out on the wing limits our play to just hoofing it to Martial and letting him do his thing.

So you're problem is with slow players out wide not CM's. If he excelled out on the wing then I don't mind Van Gaal trying him out on the wing.

You need to watch him play a little. He's not slow by any measure - he just doesn't have super speed like Martial, Rashford or Memphis. He's an intelligent, well rounded player, and he makes up for his lack of pace with his technique, IQ and work rate. Also, Mata and Mario are completely different players that you can't compare just because they're not traditional, pacy wingers. De Bruyne isn't a traditional RW and barring injuries, he's had a great season being City's second best forward.

Thats fair enough. De Bruyne has been fucking fantastic when he's played. He can get past his man and while he isn't super quick, he's still a fair bit faster than Mata. Mata also doesn't stretch the play out as well as Lingard for example. Lingard does have his limitations, but one of his strengths is being direct and stretching the opposition's backline. Mata usually drifts in, leaving the fullback exposed and compressing the play. Mata has his strengths but can't provide the fast overlapping run down the wing, which is something we're missing on the right. If Mario can provide the width and guile we need on the right, I'll be perfectly happy with him.

Henrique Mkhitaryan fills that versatile winger/mid role perfectly, he's performed extremely well this season for Dortmund too. Supposedly is stalling on renewing his contract. Really want Utd to snatch him up!

Yup, I agree, splurging 80Mil on a kid who hasn't even played a full season in the Portuguese league is a bit of a risk (martial has been playing in Ligue 1 for over 2 seasons before we got him). He may go on to become a great player and I agree that we already have a good core of young guns coming through..We need a bit more experience and top quality players now instead of taking a punt on a young raw talent.

Hope to Christ this is just a conspiracy theory. If we passed on a potential superstar because we wanted to sneak in and grab a 23-year old utility player who'll likely never be anything more, we've fallen further than people are saying. I doubt even Mourinho would pass on the best talent out of Portugal since Ronaldo because a versatile squad player was available elsewhere. Sounds like you let your mind wander a little too far mate.

What are you talking about? Joao Mario is the best midfielder in the Portuguese league. Renato has all the physical tools necesssary but it is always a gamble to spend 80 million on the probability that he will become a star.
