I remember the first time I drove to Key West. I hit the beginning of that bridge and think: "I'm almost there!" Boy, was I wrong.

Happens to everyone going though there. Finally get down to the keys and you must be almost there, right? Nope, 120 miles to go. 45 miles an hour. RIP.

45 mph?! A you freaking kidding me? Gotta be a few cops on that highway then.

You'll never see more empty cop cars on the side of the road. I swear they're there just to freak people out and make them slow down.

A bridge is one place you really don't want to speed. Flying into the water (with sharks here) in a car isn't something I want in my life.

As a Floridian, with the same fear, I'm glad you added the sharks. 😂

My recurring nightmare has been upgraded, thanks again Reddit!

Especially a scenic bridge. It's pretty common to see dolphin/turtles/any sea creature while driving on the bridge. I've caught myself many times staring off into the water while on those bridges. Probably best to only do 45.

don't know the road but going slow makes me look at everything around me except the road

Maybe you and I are just terrible drivers.....

I consider most people terrible drivers, so I guess we just aren't anything special

There arent any road barriers on the sides?

Sure there are, and as long as you're doing 45mph or less they'll keep you from jumping out into the ocean.

They actually have a big fatality counter sign for the year when you are leaving key west.

8 so far this year

I was driving up just after news years and got stuck in traffic for four hours while the first 2 of the year happened

Bridges are the best places to get away with speeding though. On most bridges there isn't a spot for cops to sit so as long there aren't any behind you or in front of you, you're good to speed and not get pulled over.

It's to protect key deer and prevent accidents, it's not exactly easy to swerve out of the way of a deer on a highway that confined, and it can take some time for first responders to show up if something does go wrong

So this one time I'm driving back to Miami from Key West, and I'm driving NE while coming toward me there is a big ass SUV speeding SW. Keep in-mind that the particular bridge I was on at the time was lined with Jersey Barriers (K-Rails for you Cali people). Since there is no center divider, people tend to keep to the right to stay away from each other.

The SUV (think older Brono or Suburban looking - jacked up a little with nice big tires that extend just a bit from the fenders) coming towards me drifts into the right-side Jersey Barrier and RIDES UP ON THE BARRIER. And I mean, puts the front-end straight up, with the wheels appearing to be at least 3 feet off the ground.

Thankfully for her, she ricochets off the barrier instead of going over and dropping 30 feet - but because of the height of her front-end, she is now BOUNCING toward me in my lane. Yes, bouncing like an LA low-rider. That's how much height her front-end got (and I guess her shocks were shit/nonexistent, no idea except that thing was bouncing). She gets 3 bounces while crossing the median lines and heads toward me in on-coming traffic.

Thankfully at bounce 3 she had cut her wheel enough at this point and got enough traction that she is able to jerk back toward her side of the highway.

TLDR: DON'T SPEED ON THE OVERSEAS HIGHWAY to KEY WEST. It's mostly bridges, and there is little to no room for error.

I've driven this highway once. There was road construction, and they were alternating a single lane on the highway. It took an hour to get to the choke point, so that we could do 45 mph.

I drove from Key West to Miami Beach. I found the Overseas Highway to be desperately boring. Reading the comments I appear to be the only one.

It's a better drive when you're heading south. Any trip that ends in Miami is gonna suck

Source: Floridian

Boy is that true. Miami's slogan should be "And I thought Tampa was bad!"

Tampa is just dirty and disgusting. Parts of Miami are fun, at least. Either way you're getting mugged

I disagree, depending on what you're looking for. I'm in Tampa at least once per month and there are more great breweries in one city than any other in Florida. And Ybor City in Tampa is a nice place to chill.

Why does Miami suck? New Jerseyite here. I've enjoyed my trips down to to South Beach.

You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there's still going to be somebody who hates peaches.

You know, I could eat a peach for hours.

My favorite line from face off. Never thought I would hear it referenced on Reddit!

I used to live down in Marathon (bare middle of the keys) and yeah, it's DREADFULLY boring considering the nearest town with anything of importance is either Key West or Miami, and each take a couple of hours to get to (unless you've got a fast boat). By the third trip to and from that highway gets old really fast.

It's been a while since I lived in Miami, but wasn't there a decent amount of stuff on Islamorada? What about key largo? I will admit the drive from Kendall to key West was brutally long, though.

Islamorada is fun if you're a tourist, not so much if you live there lol

No you aren't, when I was 19 I had a job delivering auto part from Key West to Islamorada , 2 trips a day, was brain numbing boring

I remember the first time I ran there. I can assure you, they're long. (Ragnar Relay)

Location of an awesome chase scene in the movie "True Lies."

AKA The toughest movie to buy/rent online.

Why is that?

I have no idea... Comcast, Netflix, Amazon, and Apple don't have it available to buy digitally.

Sucks when you're trying to give your money to the studios by buying the movie, then end up saying fuck it since it's not possible and stream it for free.

It has been 4 minutes since I read your comment and I already have the movie downloaded. When a movie studio gives you no choice to pay them for their movie, it may be time to try other methods of getting it :p As we speak, there's 88 people waiting to help you get this movie.

This is the one with Arnold and Jamie Lee Curtis right?

Yep, and Tom Arnold.

And Bill Paxton as one of the sleaziest characters ever cast.

I think he already mentioned Arnold.

This is exactly what I was thinking before I ever saw your comment. And I haven't seen that move in like 10+ years.

The Keys is like its own country, with random nude bars everywhere. I went in one bar where the bottom floor was normal, but the top floor was nude optional. The naked people are never who you hope they'll be. I never saw more disgusting human bodies in one place.

The Keys is like its own country

They keys are more like their own country then you think. The Conch Republic

All hail the Magic Conch!

Now only of we can get the rest of Florida to do this.

Stick to the bars where the staff is nude. Nude customers will put you off your drink.

Nude customers will put you off your drink.

Or put you further into it.

Ahh, good ole Garden of Eden!

The red garder next door is where to go if you want to see naked... Well just girls

[–]Decapitated_gamer 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I went there while I was opening the Taco Bell down there, noped out faster than a spider landing on my face

At one time they did try to break away from Florida, look it up, I think the guard was even sent in.

If you want to see a real shitshow, go during Fantasy Fest. It's a weeklong party before Halloween that is a crazy event like condensed Mardi Gras on a tiny island. Drinking in the streets and the bars don't close until like 5am.

Is this the place with the pool outside right by the bridge? I keep on noticing it when I go south off Marathon but haven't gotten a chance to check it out.

We like to sit at the outside bar and watch Sunset over the 7 mile bridge.

Is there a pool there? I keep thinking I see it but I'm driving and can't sight see. Seems like it's dark when I get back.

Yes there is, but we never use it.
On weekends they have live music outside too.
It's a fun place.

Ohhhhhhh. Been to the Keys many times. I've never eaten there. Any good?

We rode our motorcycle down there and strapped the tent to the sissy bar. Camped at Bahia Honda. One of my greatest memories.

Love the beach sites. When I grow up, I'll probably rent a cabin down there...f they aren't booked all year.

My wifes parents friends had a house on shark key till a year or so ago. Had to leave. They got tired of always having to evacuate.

They keys are really an amazing place to vacation. If you go, make sure to make the drive allllll of the way down. You won't regret it

I live in the Rocky Mountains, so driving that hiway was about as different from home as you can get. It's a very cool drive. We spent a couple days in Islamorada and several days in Key West. If you think you've seen eccentric people, you aint seen nothin til you go to Key West. Would recommend.

My boss went down there with his wife and his observation was that lots and lots of people who are hiding out from one thing or another live there. He loved the whole atmosphere.

I lived down in the Keys for about a year. Your boss isn't wrong. A lot of people there are trying to escape from something, for good and bad reasons. Sometimes I miss living in the Keys, but I'm not cut out for life down there. It's nice to visit, though. I'd probably enjoy it more now that I'm older, not including the heat.

What types of things are people trying to escape?

I'd say most people were looking for a fresh start. I got the impression that a lot of the kids I went to school with moved there to get away from problems back home. Something like being in a bad neighborhood, or in the case of my mother a new life following a divorce. People just wanted to leave their old life behind and the Keys sort of invoke this sense of romanticism doing so. At least I think so anyway.

I mean Hemingway lived their to escape the shitty North American writing culture and focus on his work. If it's good enough for him..

Never been there and it is on my bucket list. I love everything about the water (scuba, snorkel, swimming, etc), my wife doesn't swim but loves the beach. Question is, do I bring my teenage kids or leave them at home?

but I'm not cut out for life down

Care to explain? Sounds exciting.

Sure. There's not a whole lot down in the Keys, so your options for things tend to be relatively limited. The one highway for everyone can make commuting between the islands a pain. The climate is rough for me. I'm not a fan of the heat and I fry in the sun. Hurricanes suck. I'm not a great swimmer either, so going out on the boat except to fish didn't appeal to me all that much.

That being said, if you can enjoy the island lifestyle then the Keys would be right up your alley. If I was retired I might consider moving back there.

This is why I moved to Saint Augustine Beach. Heat isn't even a factor in Anastasia Island. Still get some seasons. It gets comfortable chilly in the winter. We get frost so 30-40's aren't uncommon. Great place to retire.

Im from the Canadian Rockies and was just in the Keys last winter! Such a cool and different place. I've visited a ton of National parks in Canada and the States, but the majority are all mountains, glaciers, ice cold streams, etc etc. It was soooo cool touring the Everglades and seeing such a completely unique protected ecosystem.

We took a fishing boat out of Islamorada that went North into the Everglades, it was amazing. I had no idea that the Everglades weren't just the swampy bit inland, but the entire shallow ocean between the Keys and mainland. We had manatees surface like 5 yards from the boat, had a young shark on the line (got away), and saw a dolphin pod hunting as a group, doing this "bubble/silt net" fishing method (apparently a skill unique to the Glades). My only experience with dolphins prior to that had been the ones kept in West Edmonton Mall years ago. To see a pod hunting in the wild was just surreal, I finally understood what tourists must feel like in Banff when they see big horn sheep, moose or bears for the first time.

Calgary here, we drove to Key West a couple years ago. I know exactly what you mean, we get too used to the mountains and local wildlife and wonder why tourists gape in awe, yet we do the same thing driving over the ocean on a long-ass bridge.

And stop and feed the Tarpon in Islamorada!

And obviously eat at Lazy Days on the way back

Don't forget Marker 88 as well

Never been there. I'll check it out this year!

I've been to Key West twice, and each time I flew into Ft. Lauderdale and rented a car so I could cruise thru the Keys. Absolutely beautiful drive.

I did this for the first time in March, would do it again in a hot minute.

This is so exciting to see! Just landed in Tampa and will be driving these roads to get down to the keys 😍

If you see a sign for "key deer" DO NOT SPEED! These people protect there miniature deer like crazy and will pull you for going 2 over

It's a long drive, but it's beautiful. And the Tampa airport is my favorite ever

I've been to a lot of airports and Tampa's really is one of my favorites.

Good luck. The traffic before the bridges can get pretty heavy.

You picked the best time of year. Least amount of tourists.

I forgot the date, but Key West essentially has its own Mardi Gras to boot.

  • + lots of naked people
  • - lots of naked old people

As someone who has lived in the Keys (Key Largo) my entire life, it's always good to see some love for a beautiful place on reddit! But please, we always ask that if you do vacation down here to clean up after yourself! While it's stunningly beautiful here, it's also a really fragile ecosystem with a lot of endangered animals. We've had a lot of issues as of late with tourists endangering our wildlife through litter or by directly messing with animals (going over bagging limit for fish, taking lobster that are under size, etc). If you ever visit, make sure to clean up so we can all continue to appreciate the amazing reefs, views, and my home.

[–]theCake_is_aTimeLord 5ポイント6ポイント  (1子コメント)

Dude I think I know who you are lol, we went to kls together

CSHS class of 2010 grad right here. Went to KLS. Probably knew both of you.

The people who litter aren't the type to read this comment and decide to never litter again.

If anything it emboldens their littering!

My family travels to the keys a lot for lobster season, and my mom makes me drive the 7 mile bridge every time. I don't understand why she gets so worried about it. We've driven it at least 10 times, and it really is gorgeous. You're on a road surrounded by nothing by clear blue water. I love it.

She wants to enjoy the views without having to focus on driving.

It's definitely more of a panic thing. There's a bridge in Jacksonville, Florida that she always makes me drive... and I love Jax, but it's not a gorgeous area.

I'd love that, but I may not come back alive.

It can get pretty fucking sketchy at times, but PCH is definitely something everyone should do if you like scenic driving. Lots of cool places to stop at too.

One of the best drives I've ever done. PCH is awesome.

Is it the suspension bridge by downtown that if you watch the pole cable things it looks like they're falling?

I believe so. Over the st johns (obviously) and it's one of, if not the, biggest bridges in Jax

Edit: looked it up. It's Dames Point. I know the bridge you're talking about now.

Could be the Dames Point Bridge on 295, the Matthew's Bridge on the Arlington expressway, or the Hart Bridge. We have 9 major bridges in the city, but those are the only ones that are "scary."

My friends that hate bridges mark the Dames Point and Buckman. As their least favorites, Buckman mostly because of the height mixed with short walls plus the speed everyone does.

Definitely Dames Point. She had a panic attack driving on it once, so I've driven it ever since.

Dames point? And yeah, live in Jax, can confirm; it ain't petty

Is the one in Jacksonville that she dislikes the Buckman (i-295 bypass)? If so, I can see it, the walls on that bridge have been proven to be useless in accidents.

Just looked it up and it's Dames Point. I've driven Buckman a lot, though, and I'm genuinely surprised I don't hear about cars flipping over more. Those walls look useless. Not sure how the engineer thought that was a good idea.

Yeah, a lot of friends hate the Dames Point too but it's never bothered me, is my favorite bridge in Jax, I called it the spider bridge as a kid.

As for the Buckman, these are version 2 of the walls. They tweaked them a little from the first go round if I remember right. Had a couple cars go over over a couple months one year.

Perhaps she is old enough to remember when it was a lot narrower and cars were bigger.

That may be the case. I don't question it. I just hop in the driver's seat and go. The quicker I accept my fate, the quicker we get to Key West.

[–]Exano 0

The old bridge is fucknuts..things terrifying. The bits of it still there in between missing chunks are scary to imagine being on too

What is it that makes the water green? Seagrass?

No, the darker areas are the turtle grass. Small stuff floating in the water like plankton affect the color more - well secondarily after depth.

Shallow clear water over light colored sand has that effect. That's all pretty shallow wster in this pic.

What does it look like underwater though?

Depends on the day. Can look like thick green sludge with 1-2 feet visibility at best, or crystal clear with seemingly endless visibility.

It always amazes me, How far human engineering has come.

The fact that there is a stretch of highway, spanning over 100 miles, over the ocean. Just amazing.

First built in 1938 mind you.

And there was the Overseas Railroad even before that! Operated from 1912 to 1935, when a hurricane destroyed it.

A lot of old bridges were still mostly intact when I visited in 2009?ish. I love abandoned things, so that was one of my favorite parts of my time in the Keys

I'm about to visit there in June! This pic makes me anxious to get there.

Key West had some of the worst beaches I've ever been to. Maybe some other spots in the keys are nice but Key West was disappointing.

Those bridges are scary as hell in a big storm.

conchrepublic #mile0

Could this be biked on? I doubt it but the idea of biking along this makes me want to try it someday

Too much danger of attack from vicious Key Deer, with their hideous cruel fangs.

Most people fear alligators when they come here. It's the key deer that'll get ya.

I keep seeing talk about key deer, are they really that vicious?

There are bike lanes a lot of the way, the Keys are very bike friendly, but as others have said, it's not the safest road, nor the safest drivers. The Stretch, which is this road as it goes through the wetlands above the Keys, is horribly dangerous, and there's a sign at the end updating how many people have died on it this year.

Really? It looks flat and straight, there's no snow or ice, and unless frequent fog is an issue, visibility seems excellent.

That's the open section. The Stretch is more or less flat and straight also, but it's not open like that. The problem isn't visibility or conditions, it's that it's a very, very long stretch of two lane with short passing areas. People get impatient, pass at the wrong time, bam, head on collision. And, since a lot of vehicles heading down are full to the brim with workers commuting to the hotels, the accidents tend to have high death tolls.

I biked quite a few sections about 10 years ago. Definitely doable, the shoulders are quite wide. People do drive pretty fast though so it's not entirely safe.

I don't recommend it. It's a small two lane road and many people drive fast down it. Plus there are plenty of impaired drivers.

[–]Decapitated_gamer 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

There are actual bike races and 100 mile marathons in these, my parents have down both. 2/10 won't recommend

[–]Exano 0

Yeah, but parts of it are a damn death trap, and storms can come on real real fast and they're mean if you're not inside. The people are half or totally drunk, they speed, and the drop is real..there's no way out if shit goes bad.

If you do it, go with a group. There are good trails on the bridges if you're solo, but this is not one of em

That's a big ole nope for me. Cool looking though

Was just there last month, each individual part of the bridge is not very long its more of a causeway, the longest part is only 7 miles most of the time you are just hopping from island to island.

I'm sure its not as bad as I am telling myself it is... maybe one day..

It's really not. But it's literally the only way in and out of the Keys though, unless you fly into Key West.

Road tripped from Austin to Key West last year. This was by far the best part of the trip. 7 Mile Bridge is pretty crazy.

Few drives come close: PCH, Kotor Bay, maybe H3 on a good day

I live in Clearwater, Florida and think of the Keys and the drive through them as something magical. Exploring them is even better.

Nothing like rippin down this bad boy on your chopper headed straight through to one of the many shitty bars

Just left there yesterday had a blast!! Love being only a few hours from the keys

I love driving it and seeing the old bridges that still remain, I wonder if they'll ever take them down?

I wonder how they managed to fund that project? We can't even get the pot holes fixed in my state.

It was first built as a private railroad by Henry Flagler. Then later turned into a highway.

I can't remember the name of it but there was an old ps1 game that you could drive this highway ah the memories...

[–]Emene 0

Traveled this, as I flew down to Ft. Lauderdale, to head to the Keys. Some of the most beautiful water I've ever seen.

Only reason i'll ever go to florida is to try the pork sandwiches in Miami and to drive this road :)

It's a great drive to take in the afternoon/evening. Can't be in a hurry if there is an accident game over. Get to Key West around sunset and the party begins. Leave Monday morning a lot less traffic on the way out.

Just came back from vacation in the keys, and now I'm sad

This is the southern end of US Route 1, which goes all the way up to Maine and Canada. It would probably take three weeks to drive the entire thing.

Best part is jumping off the piers/bridges

Probably the coolest drive I've ever been on.

And at the start of the 7 mile heading south take a peek to your right and you'll see the old 7 mile bridge. I hear horror stories from my mom of when my grandpa use to pass people doing 70 pulling a pop-up. Also the spot where true lies was filmed is cool to see too

To the left as you drive south is also the island that they used for the opening scene of Gilligan's island.

Sea levels rising.

When driving to Key West it only seems like 300 miles or so...

One bridge is 7 miles

I lived there for a few years. Great place to visit, don't recommend living there until you retire.

I've driven MIA to KW and back a few times. The worst part of it is getting back to the mainland and being in Homestead, its a huge let down.

And there will only be a bridge left, no Keys, by the end of the century. Billions in tourism will be lost.

That was the best driving eperience I've ever had. Driving on that bridge at night is incredible.

future reef in florida keys, coming 2033!

Man, I would love to drive down that on a motorcycle, Tom Cruise style.

Florida. A colorful, lawless swamp.
