undelete 内の FrontpageWatch によるリンク [#81|+515|194] Almost two thirds of Germans believe Islam ′does not belong in Germany,′ poll finds [/r/worldnews]

[–]DonTago 73ポイント74ポイント  (0子コメント)

The misleading issue here is that the headline misconstrues what the actual question and results of this poll were. The question was not:

Do those who follow Islam really belong in Germany?

...as the headline insinuates. The question was to the effect:

Is Islam part of Germany (German culture)?

...as can be seen from the German translated article here:

...find around three-quarters (76 percent) of the surveyed FDP followers (felt) that Islam does not belong to Germany.

...so, Germans are collectively saying that Islamic ways are not inherently a part of (or belong to) German culture. But the way the above headline is worded, it makes it sound like Germans are collectively unified in wanting to kick out any and everyone who follows the Islamic faith. That is NOT what the poll says here at all, so to say such things is misleading. I just wanted to make that clear before any corny accusations like "/r/worldnews mods are all Muslims" were hurled around.

Edit: clarity

This submission was removed because the linked article is, firstly, an opinion/analysis article, as the article contains segments where the author is expressing their personal perspectives and opinions, for example:

My opinion: With Venezuela on a “hyper-inflationary path,” it’s hard to see how Maduro can finish his term in 2019.

Most likely, there will be a military coup...

The region’s democracies should seek an OAS Democratic Charter vote as early as next month...

...furthermore, the article is older than 1 week. Only articles younger than 1 week are appropriate submissions for the sub.

[–]DonTago 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

From what I understand, it has something to do with children focusing on objects at close range (books, computers, phones, etc) at a young age while their eyes are developing. Human eyes evolved to focus on things in the distance (for hunting and such), not so much at extreme close range objects... as such, an extreme misuse of eyes in such a way at a young age can cause severe myopia. The whole 'bookworm kids with glasses' stereotype is for a reason.

So, you're blaming corral reefs dying on Australian scientists? Amazing leap of logic there! Your reasoning there is as bulletproof as paper wall.

worldnews 内の annabalabiel によるリンク Fracking in the US causing global surge in dangerous gas, study finds

[–]DonTago 23ポイント24ポイント  (0子コメント)

As far as earthquakes and fracking, studies have also said:

“The size and number of felt earthquakes caused by fracking is low compared to other manmade triggers such as mining, geothermal activity or reservoir water storage.”

As far as the flaming river in Australia, there is no proof the gas seep which caused it is a result of fracking. Damian Barrett, a natural gas researcher at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Australia’s national science agency, says:

“At this stage we don’t know fully the reason why the methane is coming to the surface... fracking’s connection with the river methane is dubious."

...methane surface gas leaks are not uncommon, and can occur completely in the absence of any fracking whatsoever... not sure if you realized that.

Furthermore, are you even aware how damaging Ethane, the gas in question here in this article, is to our atmosphere as a greenhouse gas? It's not that significant. The EIA (Energy Information Administration) doesn't even have it listed in their greenhouse gas glossary.

http://www.eia.gov/environment/emissions/ghg_report/glossary.cfm

Ethane simply doesn't last long enough in the atmosphere to be an appreciable greenhouse gas. A molecule of ethane spends 2 months on average before breaking down, as opposed to methane at around 9 years on average. Ethane is also at a much, much lower concentration to begin with (~1 ppb is 1000 times lower when compared to ~1 ppm methane).

politics 内の 7dyRttaM によるリンク Bernie Sanders: "If we can significantly increase voter turnout so that low-income people and working people and young people participated in the political process, if we got a voter turnout of 75 percent, this country would be radically transformed."

[–]DonTago 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Again, you don't even say what you think 'progress' is... you state it in this nebulous generic way, which comes across as just hollow rhetoric. What I think 'progress' is, more than likely, is probably magnitudes different from what you think it is... so where does that put us in the struggle towards it? Furthermore, to state that only one party cares about 'the people' is a pretty blatant politicized condescending statement, and is hugely dismissive of the millions of everyday Americans who are part of any other political party. I don't disagree that more informed engaged voters is a good thing... but you make it out like if there was 100% voter participation in the US, all the country's problems would be solved and we'd be unquestionably moving towards that amorphous idea of 'progress' you speak of. I'm not sure I agree with that at all. It's like with any important decision, you ideally want those deciders to consist of individuals who are informed interested voters. That's how you end up with the best results. Forcing people to vote who don't want to, or who are not informed or who do not care, will not result in more optimal outcomes.

politics 内の 7dyRttaM によるリンク Bernie Sanders: "If we can significantly increase voter turnout so that low-income people and working people and young people participated in the political process, if we got a voter turnout of 75 percent, this country would be radically transformed."

[–]DonTago 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

I am confused as to what makes you think droves of uninformed, disinterested and apathetic citizens voting would inherently steer the country towards 'progress'. Also, 'progress' means different things to different people... it is not a universal constant. I like the idea of more informed and engaged citizens voting... but forcing all citizens to vote, as some countries do, seems a bit reckless. If someone doesn't want to vote for whatever reason, that is their right and it should be respected.

I understand completely and don't get me wrong, the morbid siren song of North Korea has called to me as well. If you want a out and out fucking cultural experience, it doesn't get much more cultural than that. However, at the end of the day, it is hard not to feel engaging in such an endeavor would not be tantamount to going on a 1941 tour of the 'glorious progressive humane state of Germany', as officially guided by the Nazi government.

Do you not feel there are potentially ethical and moral issues in visiting North Korea? As you visiting there directly aids and abets the NK government financially, do you not feel such contributions directly contribute to the future suffering of the country's people? I completely understand you wanting to engage in this sort of 'poverty tourism' and ogling at this oppressive regime (as it is extremely culturally interesting and politically fascinating), but, personally, I would feel uncomfortable funding it with my tourist dollars.

Avoiding answering a question by questioning me on something I never advocated is quite disingenuous debating.

If people feel certain tax practices are unjust and result in inequitable tax collection, then they should pressure their lawmakers for change. If something is not illegal, then you can't really prosecute people for doing it... but if it is felt something should be made to be illegal, that's what the courts and legislators are for.
