I wonder why review codes weren't given out. If the SP is this damn good, and the MP that lackluster, why wouldn't they want reviewers to experience this before release?

That being said I'm quite excited that it seems to actually be a good game.

Marketing/Publisher choices are often at complete odds with Dev wishes.

They should have been having Reviewers playing/talking about the SP weeks ago.

Marketing/Publisher choices are often at complete odds with Dev wishes.

What is it you think that Marketing does? Do you think they're intentionally fucking with Developers for fun? Have you ever watched how a marketing department folds artists, writers, level designers and others into everything from press, to convention planning, to AMAs, to making merchandise?

Or did you think developers just took time out of their days to plan and execute that without oversight?

Marketing spent a ton of money that open beta. Collating and parsing reams of tweets, reddit posts, 4chan diatribes, etc. Organizing and then evaluating press events, press coverage, and lets plays on an international scale.

Betas, like any other public events, require a lot of handholding and babysitting that has to get timed with normal press coverage.

You cannot -- cannot -- run a beta without those things anymore more than you could run it without network techs watching your servers.

They should have been having Reviewers playing/talking about the SP weeks ago.

That very likely would have meant cutting back on press in other ways or reducing the exposure of the beta.

So decide if you'd rather have a beta to play yourself, or if you'd rather read about someone else playing both the single and multiplayer without you.

Sorry, I see marketing fuck up all the time. Tell me, what game got horrible press a few weeks ago? Doom. Horrible horrible press about how shit of a Doom game it was. Then no early copies for reviewers. So more bad press.

Yesterday/today is the first good press the game had gotten in a month.

That bad press from a few weeks ago... do you think that was because of marketing, or because of the multiplayer that the developers made?

You're blaming the wrong department, friend. If something is bad, all marketing can do is keep it from going nuclear. People are rightly pissed off at design decisions that the developers made for the multiplayer, not because of bad calendar planning from marketing.

It was the marketing, because they focused their strategy so much on multiplayer for the past several months. The quality of a game has nothing to do with the level of hype getting generated.

Marketing should have known to focus on the good instead of the bad. Instead of trying to scare everyone off, let some major people like totalbiscut play sp and rave about it

So you're saying that marketing should have intentionally mislead consumers by hiding the poor multiplayer until the last minute?

Wouldn't they just have consumer screaming about deceptive marketing practices? Wouldn't they also have a game that would ship with an untested multiplayer capability and likely have bigger outages?

I'm sorry but I really don't think you've thought this through.

There's no situation in which marketing could have fixed what's wrong with Doom. They could have maximized what was good about it, but that would have actively hurt their consumers.

Unless you want companies intentionally misleading you?

Dude what the hell are you even talking about? Literally ALL they had to do was give single player preview codes to people like TB, Idiotech and some streamers who would have been raving about how great it was and the game would have had ten times the amount of goodwill and hype going into launch that it did. That's ALL that needed to happen, simple as. None of this giant ball of apologetic mental gymnastics you're doing. You're just pushing contrarian really hard at this point.

Didn't they do the same thing with Wolfenstein: The New Order? I guess Bethesda just doesn't care about review sites anymore, which I can understand as often the sites are garbage.

It's amusing how Bethesda doesn't trust id games to hold up to early review scrutiny, yet completely trust their in house development studio which is infamous for their technical incompetence.

Given how good the SP is, I'm willing to take them at their word that they held review copies back so that SnapMap (and MP) could be included in the review process. SP is obviously solid and they'd've known that, and MP is obviously disappointing and they'd've known that too (especially after they let everyone play it with the open beta). The only thing left is SnapMap, which I'm guessing is going to end up being a pretty big deal once people start exhausting the campaign.
