At the start of the season, I thought Martial would struggle and Memphis would be amazing.

I never thought Martial would struggle but I never expected him to constantly look like the biggest threat in the team and show such incredible composure. I watched him a few times with Monaco because I was intrigued by his FIFA potential and thought he looked exciting but he's just been something else entirely.

Yeah, against arsenal the year before he was very strong, confident on the ball, etc, but when he arrived here...suddenly every first touch was a bit of skill, where did all that fucking pace come from? And he can finish!

"He can finish" is the understatement of the year when you take into account his goal v Stoke ;)

I never thought Martial would struggle

Why? Had you ever seen him a play a game? I had literally no opinion on him as my only memory of him was "fast young lad" against Arsenal.

Yeah I said in my comment that I'd watched him play. I'm not sure if you play FIFA but in FIFA 14 he was the most ridiculous player in any football game ever, I had him on 2 different saves and IIRC I managed to get him to a 94 and a 97 so I decided to watch him to see if there was any truth to the potential.

I inadvertently saw Martial play shortly before we purchased him when I went to the Nice/Monaco match at the start of the season. Was a bit taken aback at the fee to get him when I heard the news, but he's turned out so well for us.

I was really surprised by that FIFA 14 potential. He had like 88 potential but just kept growing, but usually EA shit on young players and then give them a massively overrated potential based on a few games. I never heard of Martial and I think that was only like his second year in the game, but whoever decided his rating had a masterstroke of genius.

True that, I remember Bakkali was ridiculously overrated that year. My front 3 on my United save ended up being Memphis, Martial and Bakkali, all over 90. It's funny how some turn out and some completely flop.

It almost appears as if OT has put a magical spell on him.....

This is kind of the thing with young players. They're totally unpredictable.

I thought LvG could bring back the good times at OT. He did not.

[–]moyesey_minutesMemphis 7ポイント8ポイント  (0子コメント)

All the talks about us stealing LvG from Tottenham and it hurts to see them finish above us.

Easy enough to get swept away with the narrative.

A guy coming off the back of a strong world cup which saw his fairly average Netherlands side thrash reigning champions, Spain, 5-1. Titles at Barcelona and Bayern, then AZ, and he won the Champions League with Ajax. Then you have the media circus which was just a 24/7 wankfest over ever minor facet of Van Gaal's management style.

At worst, I think people were expecting that we were getting a loose cannon who likely would piss everyone off and burn bridges with the club after a couple of good years. Turns out his glory years were either achieved in a different century, against weak competition, or in weak leagues.

The sad thing is that the clues were always there. The red flags were always there. We just never had the foresight to really look at them.

Fundamentally I think hiring anybody in the swansong of their career (which arguably peaked a long time ago and has been in decline ever since) is a bad idea. It will be all about them, not about the club, and they have nothing to prove so their future employment does not depend on their current job success. Ultimately if it goes well or badly they have nothing to worry about because they are getting a fat payout if they are a success or failure.

[–]ShaddaaaaaappCaretaker Extraordinaire 3

Why? He had some atrocious spells at clubs before us.

I guess it was the hype of the world cup where he managed to take a team who weren't expected to go anywhere to the semi-finals, whilst playing really well along the way.

This combined with us being excited to have a manager who had managed top clubs with a measure of success after the Moyes debacle.

It was a strange time, but I must admit I thought he'd be the one to restore this club - time will tell as to whether his groundwork pays dividends later on, but I really thought he'd be the one to do it.

Apart from the Spain game, the Netherlands played like shit the whole tournament though... They just relied on Robben to come up with some magic every game. Sounds familiar.

It was a downvote worthy opinion at the time, but the Spain-Netherlands game was a true freak. Spain could and should have been 2-0 or 3-0 up before Van Persie scores. If Spain had put one of their chances away, the odds are the Dutch would have gone out in the first round.

It's similar to the 1-6 against City. United were better in the first half and then a couple of game changing moments happened. Suddenly it's a rout.

He also did amazing things at clubs before United.

I've posted about this a few times so I'll keep it short but he's always had some very nice highs before the inevitable lows. Since he was only gonna stay with us for 3 years, it didnt seem that bad. But we never got to enjoy and experience the highs unfortunately.

I thought so too. I thought he was a tactical genius in the world cup and figured it would transform our lackluster performances under Moyes.

But at least he had won titles. You're going to have a hard time arguing seeing as most people thought he was a good appointment

He also won every title there is before us

Also guilty. I still think we're in much better shape but that is because I prefer organised bullshit over random unplanned bullshit like we had with Moyes. I guess we'll see if Mourinho takes over. I think we'd win the league in his second season if he does and will finish 2nd or 3rd next year.

I thought we would finish above Leicester.

Newcastle probably thought they would finish ahead of Leicester

  • I was excited about Fellaini pissing off to Napoli after Moyes' season. I don't know if we would have qualified for the Champions League the following year without him.
  • Schneiderlin was the transfer I was most excited about last summer. He hasn't really delivered.
  • I was not against letting Wenger have Smalling + cash for Vermaelen a couple years back.
  • Martial. But the rest of you were wrong as well, so it's OK.

Martial. But the rest of you were wrong as well, so it's OK.

I had faith in the boy. Bet gold on him scoring on his debut, and he did.

"OHHHHH YEEESSSS!!!

Your flair really makes me want to play Tekken.

I was not against letting Wenger have Smalling + cash for Vermaelen a couple years back.

To be fair at the time it was entirely logical, he has only really come into his own relatively recently.

I wouldn't say everyone was wrong about Martial. A lot of folks were vocally against the transfer and expected flop, but a silent majority still keeps faith when it comes to younger marquee transfers.

I don't think anyone expected the impact he's made.

Not in the short term, no. But not having an opinion on a player playing above expectations early on is not the same as saying he will fail.

Schneiderlin has not been a disappointment

For me he has. My expectations were very high after watched him at Southampton.

I think that's down to how he's asked to play in our team and the system that's being used. He was unreal at Southampton. Hopefully next season under Mourinho or whoever we get he comes back to form.

[–]BlemKraLThe Best 1

Debatable, he didn't come from a different League and didn't have much adjusting as our other transfers. Even though he hasn't been that bad I thought he would have been a lot better than what he showed this season.

Thought Adnan would really break through this season as a #9 after seeing some of his performances in pre-season

Adnan is the reason I wont buy an academy players kit before they prove themselves in the first team. I haven't worn that 44 kit in two years.

Having academy numbers isn't all that bad, it just depends on if they go on to be great. It's a sort of gamble because if they flop it sucks.

So much potential, but he's got a serious attitude problem.

I don't think he's gonna score 3 goals in the next 2 matches especially since one of them is a final.

Obviously we all thought we'd do better this year in the Permiership and qualify for atleast knockout stages of the CL, but most importantly I actually thought we'd challenge for the title this year. This was supposed to be the first year after SAF where we actually had to make a title run. It started off promising, we were in the first place in late october IIRC? And then december happened and it all went to shit.

[–]BurfobinoDaily Sexy Blind 0

December broke more than Shaw's leg

[–]Scarred_ShadowMartial Law 10ポイント11ポイント  (2子コメント)

I thought Schweinsteiger would be the difference between title contenders and borderline top 4 contender. Not proven wrong yet, but from what I've seen he won't be. Unless somehow he is fully fit for next season (the summer off may help), it won't be the case.

I think he would have made a big difference in the games where we were under pressure like on a Monday for example. Theres no real leaders in the team except for Rooney, Smalling is getting there.

I get what you saying but we all knew before hand that Schweinteiger has injury issues and we were pretty willing to accept this since all we really asked of him was leadership and at the price we paid, this was perfect. Now when he is fit though, Yeah... pretty disappointed by h is displays too.

[–]JhixDe Gea 12

I thought memphis would be awesome, I recently changed my flair out of disappointment.

Thought Memphis wouldn't be nearly as bad as he's been so far honestly. Didn't expect a super season but I thought he'd be average, good, little below, some great games and basically, have an overall good season. Too bad it didn't happen. Maybe under new management and all hopefully.

I thought he'd win us the title to be honest. Really had high expectations.

This is what i'm mostly disappointed by this season... yeah we didn't make top for and yeah we could have played better football but at the beginning of the season I was not looking forward to those things. I was really just looking forward to Memphis tearing most defenders a new hole.

[–]ZalgologistManchester United 4

I thought Guardiola would never join up with City, oh how wrong I was

I thought Blind would crash and burn as a center back because of his lack of pace and said so at the start of the season.

While hes not been amazing and he should definitely be replaced I am happy with how hes manager to perform there, I dread to think how far we would have slid if either him or Smalling got injured for a long period.

After our first two borefests against Spurs and Villa I said to my buddy that we were gonna win the title playing this boring style of football, and occasionally playing well in small spells like last season.

I guess I just got the place in the table wrong...

"Fellaini would make a decent striker"

[–]ShaddaaaaaappCaretaker Extraordinaire 1

To be fair he was good at Everton, absolutely terrorised defences. He was good as a forward for us too but only when we had someone who could actually put a decent cross in (Young playing on the left).

I f you genuinely looked back at his time at Everton when up front or off a striker, it would similar to at United. A few games where he was outstanding and a lot of games where he wasn't up to much.

At Everton you remember the high profile performances and didn't pay attention to the mediocre. He's a player for a team between 5th and 10th.

Every time I see Fellaini on the pitch I just shudder, but he has been one of our better players till he got suspended. How we could have used him on Tuesday.

Last time I mocked his name on the team sheet he scored and got an assist if I remember correctly. Since then I've kept quiet. I still don't think he's great but we needed a physical threat.

Thought I'd be really entertained by us attacking and playing great football and that De Gea wouldnt be the best player we had this season.

I thought Schneiderlin was going to be the answer to our midfield problems, and well he didn't really perform anywhere close to how he was last season at Southampton, hopefully he improves next season.

I assumed Memphis was going to be incredible for us, since he looked so good last season, but for whatever reason he has struggled, hope he can kick on next season because he clearly has potential to be a great player.

I definitely thought De Gea was going to be a Madrid player by the end of the summer transfer window, It just didn't seem possible that he would still be at United, thank god for shitty fax machine.

I didn't think we would make it to the final of the FA Cup seeing as how we struggled in this competition even when we had great teams, so seems rather strange for us to make it while having such a poor season.

And I know it's not about this season, but I once told my brother Obertan was going to be a star for us after I saw him play for the first time, that prediction turned out pretty good.

  • Phil Jones will be incredible this season

  • Fellaini will continue his ressurgance from last season

  • LVG is a fantastic manager and we'll win the league

  • The top 4 will be United, Chelsea, Arsenal and City

  • Selling Chicharito was a good idea

  • Memphis will be unstoppable

  • Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin will dominate our mid-field

  • Periera will make a statement in the 1st team squad this year

  • Januzaj will prove the doubters wrong

"I Was Wrong" (Dear Lord Where Do I Start?!?)

1) Memphis: I was wrong that Memphis was going to show huge progress and have some brilliant play. I haven't given up on him by any stretch. I didn't predict the Golden Boot or anything, but "I Was Wrong"

2) Andreas Pereira: I thought he was going to have a bust out season. I thought he was going to be a player who saw a ton of the field because of all his abilities... "I Was Wrong"

3) Morgan and Bastian were going to be HUGE additions this year!! For a number of reasons "I Was Wrong"

When Van Persie scored that 'flying dutchman' header and ran and high-fived LVG, I knew Utd's future with him was going to be glorious. I was wrong.

We have. He's significantly improved, but he's still got some big weaknesses. He's just able to compensate for them with athleticism. His positioning isn't quite there, as evidenced by how many fouls he's committed. To be fair, he doesn't have a partner, but just pointing out that he isn't Rio or Vidic. Still been very good, but could still improve some things

Even he has admitted he's not played well.

I still have high hopes for him though, you don't just lose the quality he showed at Southampton.

I thought that w/ LVG we would have either:

Suffered games lacking in entertainment but gotten good results for the season.

or

The team would have been entertaining to watch but lost points.

I thought we'd get either of the two but by the end of the season, we'd have good football and be on the brink of an era of dominance.

We got neither and I'm not sure where we are or the right way to move forward.

I thought we would improve under van gaal - i liked the idea of us building on solid possession to create an impressive attack.

Instead, we did the opposite - we used our possession to defend through stagnation, and our attacking play arguably regressed.

I also thought memphis had elite pace/was good at dribbling. Not sure why - maybe what I had seen on youtube (classic error) and the WC. I really cannot believe how slow he is.

Hoped Memphis would be the new Ronaldo (maybe not as good), turns out the only thing they have in common is the ego :(

Thought I may never see Mourinho manage United given his success with Chelsea and how wish to stay there for many years. But boy, I was wrong. We may finally see him manage United next season and I just cannot contain my excitement.

I always admired Mourinho and his hunger for success though many hated him for his attitude, antics etc. After Moyes appointment, I thought we would never get to sign him again. I bet no one saw this season coming.

I thought Wilson was going to get a chance and become what Rashford became :(

I thought Lingard was dead and buried. Another youngster who was loaned out and then sold. Very pleasantly surprised at how wrong I was.

I thought Perriera was gona follow in Januzajs footsteps under moyes, no clue why LVG has ignored him after all the time he gave random youth players.

Silver lining is I always thought De Gea would stay this year.. So close to being wrong but still got that right at least :3

I thought that Evans would develop into our feature center back after strong performances beside the aging Ferdinand and Vidic.

I thought Rafael would have a long and fruitful career at United even after Fabio left.

Every time I think Fellaini should be nowhere near the starting XI, he plays a great game and scores an important goal. As a player, he's still a riddle to me.

I thought Schneiderlin & Schweinsteiger would cure our problems of being able to pass our way out of trouble when teams press us.

Why? Schneiderlin was never a passer at Southampton. He's a very good player but that's not his role. He'd be the perfect player for many of the systems Mourinho has used though, but a proper Carrick replacement would need to come in to play beside him.

I thought it was clear during the summer and at the start of the season that United messed up with transfers last summer.

Tottenham wouldn't finish top 4

At least they didn't win the league. Fuck them =)

I thought, was convinced and really wanted Memphis to get 20+ in his first season

Thought Memphis would smash it.

I said something along the lines of "Memphis will outscore Rooney this season" in the preseason prediction thread.

Laughable (even given how underwhelming Rooney has been, all things considered)

Thought Smalling should of been sold

Fair play to you. I remember quite a few people with very nasty comments after his city red card yet Evans was the shining light. I think next season is last chance saloon for Jones though. He needs to stay fit

I hated both, thought they were both liabilities the season before and going into that season

I thought Fussbalmeister would last the season :(
