Haven't seen one of these for a while, saw something similar at the end of last season, thought it would be good for us to have another go with two games to go.

I guess it was the hype of the world cup where he managed to take a team who weren't expected to go anywhere to the semi-finals, whilst playing really well along the way.

This combined with us being excited to have a manager who had managed top clubs with a measure of success after the Moyes debacle.

It was a strange time, but I must admit I thought he'd be the one to restore this club - time will tell as to whether his groundwork pays dividends later on, but I really thought he'd be the one to do it.

I've posted about this a few times so I'll keep it short but he's always had some very nice highs before the inevitable lows. Since he was only gonna stay with us for 3 years, it didnt seem that bad. But we never got to enjoy and experience the highs unfortunately.

Easy enough to get swept away with the narrative.

A guy coming off the back of a strong world cup which saw his fairly average Netherlands side thrash reigning champions, Spain, 5-1. Titles at Barcelona and Bayern, then AZ, and he won the Champions League with Ajax. Then you have the media circus which was just a 24/7 wankfest over ever minor facet of Van Gaal's management style.

At worst, I think people were expecting that we were getting a loose cannon who likely would piss everyone off and burn bridges with the club after a couple of good years. Turns out his glory years were either achieved in a different century, against weak competition, or in weak leagues.

The sad thing is that the clues were always there. The red flags were always there. We just never had the foresight to really look at them.

At the start of the season, I thought Martial would struggle and Memphis would be amazing.

I never thought Martial would struggle but I never expected him to constantly look like the biggest threat in the team and show such incredible composure. I watched him a few times with Monaco because I was intrigued by his FIFA potential and thought he looked exciting but he's just been something else entirely.

Yeah, against arsenal the year before he was very strong, confident on the ball, etc, but when he arrived here...suddenly every first touch was a bit of skill, where did all that fucking pace come from? And he can finish!

  • I was excited about Fellaini pissing off to Napoli after Moyes' season. I don't know if we would have qualified for the Champions League the following year without him.
  • Schneiderlin was the transfer I was most excited about last summer. He hasn't really delivered.
  • I was not against letting Wenger have Smalling + cash for Vermaelen a couple years back.
  • Martial. But the rest of you were wrong as well, so it's OK.

I thought Blind would crash and burn as a center back because of his lack of pace and said so at the start of the season.

While hes not been amazing and he should definitely be replaced I am happy with how hes manager to perform there, I dread to think how far we would have slid if either him or Smalling got injured for a long period.

I thought Schweinsteiger would be the difference between title contenders and borderline top 4 contender. Not proven wrong yet, but from what I've seen he won't be. Unless somehow he is fully fit for next season (the summer off may help), it won't be the case.

To be fair he was good at Everton, absolutely terrorised defences. He was good as a forward for us too but only when we had someone who could actually put a decent cross in (Young playing on the left).

  • it couldn't get worse after Moyes.

  • all of LvG's signing were great, Schneiderlin, Rojo and too an extent Herrera don't really impress imo

After our first two borefests against Spurs and Villa I said to my buddy that we were gonna win the title playing this boring style of football, and occasionally playing well in small spells like last season.

I guess I just got the place in the table wrong...

Thought Memphis wouldn't be nearly as bad as he's been so far honestly. Didn't expect a super season but I thought he'd be average, good, little below, some great games and basically, have an overall good season. Too bad it didn't happen. Maybe under new management and all hopefully.

Obviously we all thought we'd do better this year in the Permiership and qualify for atleast knockout stages of the CL, but most importantly I actually thought we'd challenge for the title this year. This was supposed to be the first year after SAF where we actually had to make a title run. It started off promising, we were in the first place in late october IIRC? And then december happened and it all went to shit.
