sanfrancisco 内の bloobityblurp によるリンク Jeff Kositsky named 1st director of SF’s new homeless department

[–]intortus [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

This seems great. The city has been treading water, at best, when it comes to the homeless. Having a more centralized policy ought to be far more effective than just having the mayor periodically rough up encampments whenever it's politically convenient. I imagine this would also make it a lot easier for the homeless to utilize services.

I'm only on Nextdoor in case someone complains about my dog. It seems like half the "urgent" emails I get are black people sightings.

My favorite was one woman having a panic attack because a couple of eight year olds knocked on her door and continued to hang out in the vicinity. She lived across the street from a playground.

I think the naysayers are expecting it to turn into the Mission overnight. Give it a decade or two.

The northern part of Mission Bay has tons of sidewalk retail, and I've noticed it's starting to fill out. With commercial real estate as insanely expensive as it is right now, I bet it will fill up quickly.

Sure, the southern part where it abuts Dogpatch is going to be soulless hospital/UCSF land (though I'm looking forward to the new park opening up). I will also agree that everything east of 3rd is a depressing wasteland, but that'll be totally different in 10 years. These are good zones to have, though, because they bring in the jobs, workers, and other visitors to justify all that new retail space to the north.

I think Dogpatch will be ground zero for the next big gentrification wars.

I'm calling you ignorant because you're ignorant of the notion of "food insecurity", which is precisely what this exhibition is apparently meant to address.

It sounds like you're ignorant, and this exhibition is educational, so why don't you go see it?

Maybe you aren't the target audience for this article. It's not an educational piece on hunger and poverty in modern society, it's a review of an art exhibition.

Mission Bay has only just been built, I think it's a little early to say it's a dead zone. It's certainly many times as lively as it was one year ago, at least during weekdays.

It hasn't been an effective main artery street in the decade I've lived here. I personally don't care, I moved out of the Mission three years ago, I'm just saying nothing of value has been lost while much has been gained.

As the crow flies? Let's be practical, if you're going more than a few blocks down Mission in a car that's stuck on the ground, it's going to be faster to go down S. Van Ness.

Mission was always the biggest logjam. It even screwed up the cross streets.

South Van Ness, Guerrero, those are more than side streets. Each has far more street capacity than Mission, with less foot and bus traffic. So why would you ever want to drive down the full length of Mission?

Army was renamed Cesar Chavez over 20 years ago. The streets change quite a bit from decade to decade. Fixing Mission is long overdue.

Since you hate data, let's talk anecdotes instead. I've never not regretted driving down Mission instead of any of the many less congested alternatives nearby.

Neither Market nor Mission delivered anywhere near the daily throughput of vehicles that streets just a block or two away did, even before cars were partially prohibited from these streets. By eliminating cars, these arteries can take over as leaders in delivering people instead of vehicles, which works out much better for everyone since these two streets are not designed to cope with vehicular congestion.

It's called a party wall. In a dense urban environment (like the one you're advocating for), these tend to be blank because it's prohibitively expensive to build windows into them. If any neighbor ever builds up their property, those windows would have to be removed, and there are more onerous standards for fire safety.
