I've just accepted that it's not my kind of game. It's a bit too hard and tedious for me, and even when I figure out where I want to go or how to defeat a tough enemy/boss, I'm not having fun. Getting my ass kicked over and over again is irritating and makes me want to punch something when I lose a lot of souls.

I can understand the appeal, but it's just not my game. Not to mention how whenever somebody criticizes the game the go-to response is basically "git gud!" or "I guess you like games that hold your hand all the way through". Ughh I don't mind a challenge, but it's too challenging to where it takes all the fun out of it for me.

I haven't played any souls game, so I can't say too much, but in game design "hard" and "challenging" definitely aren't mutually exclusive.

This is why "bullet sponges" are such a hated parameter.

I'd say it's the tedium. There's a point where I just want to fight the boss, but I'm sick to death of having to fight literally the same enemies every. single. time. Even if you can run past them, it's still annoying as hell since I just want to get right on the boss fight. Plus, I never feel like I accomplish anything when literally all the work I do just comes back whenever I feel like leveling up. Super annoying and throws off the entire game for me.

Fallout 4's survival mode does the concept of only saving at certain spots (bonfires) so much better. You can only save by sleeping, but each time you sleep enemies aren't respawning so it feels like you're making progress. It's also a nice way to roleplay, I see it as my character taking a quick sit down to plan their next move, then returning to think about what's next after they've cleared an area out. Plus, it makes finding a bed when you haven't saved in a while so much fun, since you know you'll be actually safe when you get to it and won't have to deal with all the enemies AGAIN when you go back to where you were.

So I bought Dark Souls 1 to try to get into the series and after about 15-20 hours of playing I don't think the series is for me. I honestly dreaded to play it and hated exploring because each time I found a new area I didn't think "cool new enemies" instead I thought "fuck I don't know their attack patterns". Is Dark Souls 3 more of the same or could I expect a different experience?

Definitely more of the same.

I hope the DLC follows the pattern of the past games in the fact that it's often better than the base game and gives it just what it needs. I've only played DSIII for about 100 hours and I think I'm about done with it. I'm very disappointed with it, as I feel like the story was a cop-out, there was too much fanservice, it couldn't stand on its own legs, as it constantly refers back to DS in less than decent ways, and the overall game is just frustrating to play. Don't give me the "git gud" garbage; the game is just...ugh. Don't even get me started on enemies like Lothric Knights, Pus of Man, or Cathedral Knights. They're the epitome of everything that's wrong with the combat.

Oh, did I forget something? PvP?

Hah. What a joke.

Needless to say, the more I think about it, the less and less I end up liking DSIII. Maybe it's because DSII is my favorite of the series and it feels like its now a red-headed step child, what with DSIII barely referencing it in comparison to DS. Or the severe downgrades in combat and even basic UI. Or variety in both playstyle or spells.

Oh jesus christ until the DLC comes out I think that DSIII is the worst Souls game for me. I steadily got more and more upset as I wrote this. Probably because I had such great expectations and was let down, but I guess that's more my fault than the game's.

Dark Souls 3 (IMO) is my least favorite in the souls series at the moment. This is of course discounting the shitty, early PvP.

There is way too much fan service (IMO). Like, so many fucking references to Dark Souls 1 and little to 2. Dark Souls 2 was able to have it's own identity while still feeling like a souls game. 3 feels like a Dark Souls 1.5.

Some covenants are stupid and redundant. Blue Sentinels and Blade of the Darkmoon are the exact same. In Dark Souls 2, Blue Sentinels felt dead. In Dark Souls 3, both covenants feel super dead. FromSoftware somehow managed to make it even worse. Watchdogs of Farron and Aldritch Faithful are both the same in that they're covenants that invade people who go through a certain area. Unlike Aldritch Faithful, Watchdogs is empty since it's at a lower level.

It has some of the best bosses (i.e. Soul of Cinder, Dancer of Boreal Valley, Nameless King, etc.), but also some of the absolute worst (Deacons of the Deep, Ancient Wyvern, Yhorm the Giant, etc.). I don't expect every boss to be amazing ; however, I think it's reasonable to expect a boss that doesn't insult the player.

Dark Souls 3 also feels a lot like Bloodborne and not in a good way. It seems like Miyazaki has taken way, way too much from Bloodborne. Magic is horrendous in this game due to many factors, a few being : high investment for little returns, pacing of the game (enemies are more aggressive and up in your face), and terrible tracking (you can literally side step and a spell will miss). Using estus flasks is nigh unpunishable in both PvE and PvP. I shouldn't be able to chug twice and dodge while an enemy is right about to swing. Dodges also cost jack shit. I was watching someone streaming their invasions and a host just spent 5 fucking minutes just spamming dodges. At this point, it feels like Bloodborne without guns.

Cheap bullshit. I like to call bullshit on a lot of things that aren't actually bullshit, but holy fucking shit. Jailers? Fuck that shit. They just look at your fat fucking face and your health drains fast. Oh, and they also increase your equip load so GG. Some enemies have infinite or insanely high poise (cathedral knights, big snake bastards), others clip through walls (fire witch, big snake bastards, cathedral knights, any fucker with a big ass weapon), ridiculous tracking (every weapon, lothric knights, cathedral knights), and teleporting dogs. Fuck teleporting dogs.

Shitty, shitty, shitty variety in useable weapons. Dark Souls 3's defense system makes split weapons absolutely shitty. It doesn't help that a lot of boss weapons have split damage. Also, greatswords are completely outclassed by straight swords. They have less damage, less range, more stamina usage, and a worse moveset. There is no reason to use greatswords.

I will say though, that compared to 1 and 2, 3 has the best release PvP. Yes, longswords, estoc, greatshields, and spin combos are OP, but they aren't as cancerous as ninjaflipping havelyns with fog ring.

Dark Souls 3 does have some merits. One being weapon arts. Although I vastly prefer power stancing and effectively dual wielding weapons (why the fuck would I ever block with a parrying dagger), weapon arts is a pretty cool addition. Warcry changes the R2 moveset for select weapons (club, black knight greataxe, large/great club, etc.)

NPC's are great. While the questlines are retarded in how you're supposed to progress, they're entertaining. In Dark Souls 2, I only bothered with Lucatiel and in Dark Souls 1, Solaire and Lautrec. I went out of my way trying to do all of them and had no regrets (except doing Yuria's).

Dark Souls 3 is my least favorite at the moment, but I can't say that I didn't have fun with it. I have ~110 hours and I've had a fuckton of fun.
