About this project
Geizeer - eco friendly ice cooling
Geizeer was born from the need to cool our work environments and ourselves during the period of intense heat, safely and at a cost of less than 1 cent per day.
It is not always possible nor is it healthy to use air conditioners on a daily basis. The high energy consumption makes it a comfortable accessory but excessive use can cause discomfort, such as headache, stiff neck, back pain and respiratory problems. The same goes for the use of fans, by mobilizing the air, you feel a sense of coolness but instead you are stimulating sweat and increasing the risk of dehydration. Working, studying, sleeping, watching TV or enjoying a meal can be difficult during the hot sunny days as a consequence.
Hence the idea of Geizeer, an eco- friendly ice cooling with refrigerant mixtures, which consumes less than 1 cent per day!
Geizeer is made of wood, a perfect thermal insulator. Externally it is composed of two shells in wood and metal finishing frames. Internally it contains a rechargeable battery, a micro USB with PCBs, a DC brushless fan and an ice pack.
The two lower and upper halves of the body, overlapping, form a cube, perfected by three metal frames. On two of the four wooden legs, the upper and lower half, are the electrical contacts that allow the operation of the fan. Half of the cube that serves as a base provides an isolated space for a rechargeable battery and a PCB with micro USB. Above this space is where the cooling elements are housed. However, the half which is the lid, is enclosed with a brushless fan. The air is sucked from the grid in the upper half, cooled inside the cube and pushed out through the slots that divide it in half. Geizeer comes from micro-USB to USB cable.
Once we had the idea of starting a Geizeer, the design process began by developing the study of form, an essential step to refine this design in a short time. The first drawings were made on paper, and then transformed into three-dimensional models using CAD programs.
For the first prototypes, a 3D printer FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) was used. This allows you to have, in a short time, various forms of different sizes, giving us the opportunity to do the efficiency test. From here we have selected and worked on the most functional form, refining the design.
During the second phase of prototyping a CNC pantograph was used to obtain the prototypes as similar as possible for a display speech of the product, conceived to make the most of the efficiency and functioning with wood test.
In the third phase, Geizeer was finished and colored by the expert hands of Italian craftsmen.
In the last phase, the electrical and decorative components have been mounted.
Geizeer use is very simple. Just enter the cooling elements, previously frozen from the freezer into the lower half of the cube. At this point, simply overlap the two halves, so that the two signs of power coincide.
This way the contacts are touching, the electrical circuit is closed, and the fan operates. To turn it off, simply lift and rotate the cover.
That’s right. There are no ignition keys!
The fan draws hot air from the upper grid which forces a loss within the cube. The shape of the ice-pack allows a better diffusion of air and the amount of mixture to the gel contained is sufficient to cool a room of about 12 square meters. Additionally, because of this, it prevents an overheating of indoor air, due to the mechanical rotation of the blades.
After a few seconds in contact with the ice pack, the cool air is pushed out 360 ° from the cracks that divide in half Geizeer.
The ice pack also provides a dedicated space where you insert diffusers that will enable a fragrant environment.
The small size of the Geizeer makes it transportable and can be used in any environment.
The corners are rounded, the electrical components are concealed in the spaces provided, the metal frames attach perfectly to the wood and the ice pack acts as a cone-shaped diffuser, facilitating the escape of air, increasing the flow and range. Because of this, it prevents an overheating of indoor air, due to the mechanical rotation of the blades.
Geizeer has the ability to cool, at around 3 degrees, a room of 12 square meters keeping costs contained.
In fact, using it for the duration of 24 hours will have an economic consumption of less than 1 cent. The cooling elements previously frozen, containing mixture gels, has a duration of about 4 hours and can be reused.
The electrical components of Geizeer are retractable into the wood and the ignition is given by the contact of 4 metal feet that, depending on the placement of the two halves of the cube, turn on or off the circuit. The 3,7V battery lasts around 7 hours and is charged via micro-USB cable. We have studied this method of ignition to make Geizeer as safe as possible, even in the presence of children or animals. In fact, the fan will run only if the cube is closed.
The cold air is pushed out at 360 ° from the slots which divide in half the cube to a diameter of about 1.20m. This system allows the refreshment of the entire area around Geizeer, unlike other unidirectional ventilation systems (think of a table with people around). The brushless DC fan is powered at 12V and has a life span of over 50,000 hours.
The wood has exceptional thermal characteristics, in fact, is a microscopic material that absorbs moisture easily, in addition to being a perfect thermal insulator.
Given its low conductivity and thermal capacity, the inside of Geizeer will remain cold and isolated from the external environment heat. It follows a good energy saving and longer life of an ice pack.
Geizeer is available with 2 different grids of ventilation, designed by parametric equations: Linear and Parametric.
Geizeer is available in different colors: Natural and Lacquer.
Geizeer offers many options

Thank you so much for having a look at our project!!!
And remember: if we don’t reach our goal, we won’t get funded, and no one will use Geizeer ! So, please, share it with your friends and your family!!!
Risks and challenges
During the design phase we came in contact with suppliers to obtain quotes and production time.
Parties requesting more time for production are the mold for the ice pack and the wooden shells.
We will start the production of the mold as soon as the goal is exceeded so as to fall in line with delivery.
For wood production we are already in contact with several work centers that provide us with a production lot more than the number of pieces for the achievement of the goal.
If the campaign far exceeds our expectations we will move to look for other suppliers.
The challenge of the project is to receive a quantity of orders higher than expected, but we are taking precautions by contacting multiple vendors.
