Welcome to /r/OCD, a subreddit dedicated to discussion, articles, and images regarding Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a disorder characterized by two components: obsessions and compulsions.
Obsessions are intrusive thoughts that cause unease, apprehension, dysphoria, fear, or worry.
Compulsions are repetitive behaviours and actions, both internal and external, that one does with the aim of reducing the anxiety caused by obsessions.
Effective treatment methods are available. CBT is a type of therapy that teaches you tools you can use on a daily basis to manage your disorder. For example, resisting compulsions. There are types of CBT, the main one for OCD treatment being ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention). It's extremely important that you see an OCD specialist so they can teach you how to manage your disorder. Do not just accept that you cannot be treated. OCD doesn't go away on it's own.
"Types of OCD"
What does ROCD, TOCD, HOCD, and so on mean? These are just easier ways for people to describe what they are going through. For example, if your OCD mainly revolves around your relationship, you can say you have ROCD. Be careful. This can be very misleading. OCD is the same no matter what you obsess about. The treatment is the same whether you have "ROCD" or "TOCD". There are no "Types of OCD". OCD is OCD.
RULES:
1. Do not ask /r/OCD for medical advice.
Including: asking for a diagnosis, self-diagnosis confirmation, or opinions as to whether you have OCD.
2. Do not give medical advice or attempt to diagnose other users. For more information, please see reddit's user agreement and this post.
3. Keep submissions relevant to OCD.
OCD is not synonymous with the mild feeling of annoyance caused by things like this, this, and this. Keep these posts to /r/mildlyinfuriating.
4. Avoid reassurance-seeking, providing reassurance, and / or enabling compulsions.
Seeking reassurance is a compulsion to confirm that one's obsession is or isn't a real threat, or that compulsions should or shouldn't be followed through on. Providing this reassurance actually strengthens the obsession by validating it. Instead, please support others through more constructive means. More Info
