If given 80m to spend on one player would you rather spend it on a high quality forward or midfielder? (self.reddevils)

My own take is that i've been opposed to spending 60/80m on a midfielder from the very start even when most of the sub was on the Sanches hype train.

The wins and points we need for next season or two will not come from yet more midfield dominance. We urgently need to spend money on replacing the quality of prime Rooney/RVP/Nani/Valencia thats missing in the squad. IMO all resources should be spent on the forward line and a top quality CB to ensure more points in the league and guaranteeing CL participation year on year.

We can think about the midfield quality required for CL knockouts 2/3 years down the line.

In fairness, Lingard's the only one who makes those chances happen.

I'd rather Lingard create 5 goal scoring chances and fluff them because of his through balls and clever runs than Mata create nothing and us end a match with 2 shots, 1 on target.

Harsh to blame him entirely when our entire set of forwards is painfully mediocre and don't even create chances to waste.

Griezmann has atleast as much creative ability as Lingard. Better long range shooting and heading ability than Lingard too aside from the insanely better finishing.

100m euros. Was 80m, got bumped up in Jan.

We've been tracking the guy since he was at La Real, apparently heavily scouted by Moyes.

I can't imagine how much better this squad would be if Woodward could close a deal and if Moyes had any semblance of decisiveness.

He thought he had 6 years so he was happy to dither around and scout for a year to see if players would be a good long term fit.

Moyes is a fantastic manager at talent identification but his lack of urgency's ridiculous. Can't help but feel like we would be in a much better position if he had gotten the chance to close all the deals he had been scouting.

Instead the sacking, world cup and rushed transfers ended up being a disaster.

I agree, we have alot of quality young talent at the min. What we need are established players who are gonna perform immediately and help the young guys already there develop.

Who is going to supply all these forwards you guys want? We lack imagination in midfield with our sideways and backwards passing we amusingly call "possession". Buy Greizman only to still have schnederlin and felleini passing it back and forth to each other and maybe back to blind for variation? Really?

You are correct to a degree, but if you think of the impact Rashford had when he came into the team. It was because he offered something differnet the other lads were not doing. He played on the sholuder of the defenders, made runs in behind and streched the defence.

He isn't doing that anymore because it's not rewarded by a team that doesn't pass forward. I used to blame it on that too.

I'd go to OT and scream at players for not moving or making runs behind. I'd be convinced that Bastien and Morgan were desperately WANTING to pass through and forward but we were too static.

And then I watch more closely the beginning of games. The forwards make lots of runs. All the time. Up and down. Off the ball rolling defenders trying to get in the box. And nothing comes their way. Over and over again. No balls go towards them. After a while of this they stop running.

It begins with midfield. LVG has them so defensive minded (which is why we're second best in league at that) that they can't think to burst forward and drive through or play balls in behind. We need those players desperately.

With champions league next season I expect nothing less than Griezmann. We also need a CM, I was so hyped for Renato potential but since he is gone we better try for a more experienced CM. this summer we are going to be the richest revenue club, Edd should get his shit together bring Mourinho and either try for Pogba(unlikely) or maybe Gundogan(injury prone) or Naingolan.

Midfielder.

The average selling price of a midfielder is lower than the average selling price of a forward. We'd get higher quality for £80m on a midfielder than on a forward. (In theory.)

The reason midfielders are cheaper is because they are typically worth fewer points / league positions. We wouldn't win the league even if we had Busquets or Verratti because we still won't score enough goals. On the other hand if we added Neymar or 2014 Hazard that could single handedly change the equation.

But James is another #10, what we need is a quality winger pacey in the like of Reus or a #9 comsistant striker the like Lewandowski. I'm not saying we sign these players just someone in those moulds.

James is a goal scoring ten like KDB. He creates 6-10 goals out of nowhere per season. I'd say thats a lot of points i won't be opposed to.

A forward all day, buying a midfielder now.. especially someone as young as Renato is only a luxury. Our right flank is in desperate need of an upgrade and our options in midfield is not really that limited, we have been rotating our midfield this entire season and that just shows it's depth where as our front line has seen very limited tinkering, this might be due to form or players not turning out how we hoped they would but it's clear that we came into this season hoping that the players we have would prove to be enough, we even sent Janujaz out on loan. Unfortunately players like Rooney and Depay have not turned out as hoped. I say we ball out and make Crazy offers for players like Mahrez, Griezman or Aubumeyang.
