Hi all,

I would like to thank you all for the smiles you brought to my brother's face. All the happiness you put in him and how much you lot brightened his mood.

My brother was the user that was /u/VillageChef, a while back on this subreddit he posted in your 'Free Talk Friday' which he explained he was going through some tests for brain tumors and other sort of medical procedures. Unfortunately three days ago he passed after going into a comatose state after being diagnosed with severe cerebral edema and being declared brain dead.

I will not go into further details of the situation but I just wanted to say thank you to this community. I'm not sure if any of you lot remember but he volunteered to begin a snapchat account for this subreddit that he had to stop due to his condition but every day that account was making him the happiest person as he just felt he was a part of something.

He rarely commented here but he was constantly reading and enjoying the ride, I know that he's somewhere now still obsessively refreshing this subreddit trying to get his United fix.

Thank you all, you do not understand the complete joy you brought to someone.

Ah man. Didn't know your brother all that well tbh but reading that I do hope his last memories were quiet the joyful ones.

Sad to hear about anyone's passing but when it's a family member or a community member, like this one, it's pull the heart strings even more.

Oh fuck. I had the Snapchat on my account, and I read his free talk friday posts as well - never connected that they were the same user. It's so surreal hearing this - I never knew him, and he never knew me, yet he played a role in my life, and I'd like to imagine through our indirect interactions, in some small moment I played one in his.

All my thoughts with you and your family during this time, and thank you so much for coming here and updating us about it.

Really sorry to hear. I've been lucky enough to have never experience a loss in my life and that's after 23 years. I do however know many that have and from experiencing their grief all i can say is surround yourself with the people close to you in your life for as long as it takes and hold no emotion back.

I hope you and your family are holding together.

Shit man. Same age, same story (apart from grandpa dying when I was too young to care). Do you also frequently get split second frightening thoughts of how you'd continue to run your life if someone in your immediate family died? I start thinking about it because I want be prepared (from a practical and emotional perspective) but then I start getting worried that I'm being too pragmatic about the whole thing and kinda freak out and stop thinking about it.

You never can prepare for it honestly I think. Preparing and thinking ahead is one thing. Going through it is completely different and the process after too.

Just cherish the friends and family you have and that's the best way to go about doing things. That's what I think at least.

Yeah you can but it still applies even from the practical because it'll blend with the emotional part too. Ok maybe the preparations and all can be dealt with better indeed so you're right on that aspect.

I was in the same boat as you. Up until the age of 26 I hadn't lost anyone close to me. Death seemed almost abstract to me.

Then my healthy, active and social grandmother had a sudden heart attack and died at 67. I fully expected to have another 10 years with her and for her to be a part of my children's lives. Ever since then I've been preoccupied by thoughts of my own mortality. I worry about my parents regularly. They're in their late 40's and healthy enough but who knows.

Take more of an interest in people's lives. Tell them you love them. It's scary but any time you say goodbye could be the last time.

I was 24 when my Grandma went to hospital because she wasn't feeling well and had Jaundice. A week later she had died of Pancreatic cancer nobody even knew she had it.

I know what you mean and I can tell you it becomes 10 times worse when you have a child of your own. My son was 1 on the 20th of April and he had to have an MRI. The doctor took what seemed like ages to tell us what was wrong. Rather than telling us straight away she was like "What did you expect when you came here today" and she was very sombre, so I was expecting the worst.

Last week, I wanted to start a snapchat account for a community project in my own school, and recalled that your brother did something similar for this sub.

I sent him a PM without a reply- so I had to wade my way through his comment history to find out how he did it (which he explained in a comment pretty recently.)

I don't know where I was going with this but I wish he would have known that his simple idea for a snapchat account for a small online community has sparked off similar ideas all the way in Southeast Asia.
