This is the opening to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig. An amazing anime that you need to watch. The Ghost in the Shell saga is a little confusing on what came first and what to watch first so if you need some help just ask.

+Snow Anaya (NeoWaste) Fuck that, they better have Kenji Kawaii's "Making of a Cyborg" played while we see the creation of the Major's cybernetic body... or this film is screwed...

This anime has aged gracefully, the concept can be put out today or even far into the future and still have the same impact for the viewer. I'm glad Production I.G did the animation, it's among the best which would help keep the appeal of the anime for new viewers as well.

+soridosuneku The thing is about the ghost in the shell saga is that most of the different versions of it are not connected in anyway other than the characters and setting of course. The manga is it's own plot line and the anime is it's own plot line and most of the movies are it's own plot line. (Minus Solid State Society that continues from the Anime) Personally I recommend Stand alone complex (the anime) over all of them. It's got the perfect mix of everything that makes the other forms of ghost in the shell great with out hardly any of the set backs. not to mention it's aged beautifully over the years becoming even more relevant than it was back then. You can watch ghost in the shell for free on hulu along with both of the movies and the solid state society movie.

I would say watch the original film first, and if you enjoyed it for the themes present go on to watch Innocence. If you didn't enjoy the themes as much but still enjoyed the film, then watch Stand Alone Complex. Also, never watch Arise. I know you will want more, but trust me. It isn't worth it.

+mkallon 6 went into local music/dvd retailer to pick up GITS2:Innocence a bit after it`d been released for home viewing & stumbled across GITS SAC 2nd Gig vols 1 & 2 - boy, did I have fun that day when I got home & fired-up the dvd player! Found all 7 vols of SAC season 1 shortly thereafter, & can remember eagerly awaiting the releases of each subsequent vol of SAC 2nd Gig here in the UK (albeit 6 wks apart). From the stunning audio of Kenji Kawai`s work in Innocence to the the genius collaboration of Yoko Kanno & the now-sadly-late Origa, the adaptations of GITS have never failed to disappoint me visually & aurally.

I wish more anime's were like this one. I mean sure, I don't mind that some people prefer the school like, window seat in the classroom type of show. It's just this one was truly thought out and made beautifully. Without downgrading women in order to grab the male community's attention and perfecting the story line without giant monsters attacking the city.

There is media that does the same to men, and I don't think that that argument should be the basis here. Besides, imho there were exposure scenes that were completely unnecessary. With that said, I agree with you. Ghost in the Shell, from its original iterations as manga and movies to the animated series, is an amazing work. It's not an average, every day, slice of life anime. It's extremely well thought out and planned; it makes subtle inferences about society and technology that are applicable for present and future consideration. It brings to light ethical questions that we, as a society, haven't even begun to address. I shit you not, my technological ethics class uses Ghost in the Shell as an example and subject of study and consideration for the ethics of advancing technologies.

From a writer's perspective this anime makes Psycho Pass look like a joke. Psycho Pass has flashy action and an interesting plot driven by generic and cheesy moral philosophy, it has its twists but it doesn't explore its themes well enough and the story is very simplistic in comparison. While Ghost In The Shell has one of the best written plots with enough depth and complexity to make the death note look like a coloring book, it has a deep and complex story driven by philosophical/political/ and psychological themes such as the second order simulacra, the ship of Theseus, cartesian dualism, the Marxist materialist dialect, and much more. This anime is a thinking show and it is not meant for people who only want action shows with a plot that's very easy to understand due its simplicity, when studio Production I.G said Psycho Pass was the next Ghost In The Shell it made wonder just how low their standards had become after making mediocre anime like Guilty Crown and Attack on Titan.

Flashy action? Themes not explored? You must either be a retard or a troll. You like the simplicity presented in Ghost in the Shell. Ok, so Psycho Pass too difficult foot you to understand? Probably. No intelligent person would ever say the Ghost in Shell was well written. Only blind fanboys would say that.
    1
    Eros V
+tachyon I didn't say the themes weren't explored, I said they weren't explored enough, it is simply mentioned and showed how it fits in the story, it is obviously spelt out that most teenagers would easily understand it and rave over it. The societal and psychological themes of living in a technological dystopian society presented in Psycho Pass is not only simplistic but also predictable for a cyberpunk story. Ghost In The Shell on the other hand has the stand alone complex phenomenon based on the second order simulacra, collectivism vs individualism, the anarchist s.a.c vs the marxist materialist dialect, capitalism, socialism, the disgusting nature of raunch culture, mind body dualism (hence the title), and gestalt psychology, which all plays a role in the story that ties many seemingly unrelated events together in order to figure out the phenomenon and conspiracy, my college philosophy professor used it as a great example for our lessons because of how well explored the themes are. I would not be surprised if you only watched four episodes of the show and didn't know how to tie everything together.
    1
    tachyon
You are making the series look deep and intelligent. Sorry to say but it's not what you think it is. It's superficial. A 5 year would enjoy this anime because its good moments are the action scenes. It's story is no better than a Shonen manga.
    12
    Eros V
+tachyon So a 5 year old kid could decipher the Laughing Man phenomenon as well as the psychology and politics behind it, makes perfect sense, you might as well show Monster to that 5 year old while you're at it.

+tachyon this is a funny argument you guys have here. But its rather one sided since youre not presenting any reasons for why psycho pass is better while the people defending it are doing a good job. I dont like both of the shows nor do i hate them theyre good but definitely not the best however i do think ghost in the shell is better and not because im a fan of the movie and masume shirow its just that psycho pass has more faults and also (idk why u consider, how intelligent a show is as a plus, it doesnt even matter ill just go where this argument is leading) ghost in the shell is more intelligent. Psycho pass is easily comprehensible and straight forward, it all comes down to "should i continue to follow the fundamentals of this flawed system or should i disobey it and risk the downfall of the superficial utopia" . Also the quotes in psycho pass...just because the antagonist is constantly seen muttering quotes doesnt mean its intelligent especially when they dont do anything for the progression of the plot or develop the villain and they just make the show seem pretentious. As for the antagonist his actual motives and feelings were never revealed and the audience is left meandering on wether hes someone they should support or despise. the protagonists of the show were not that compelling. The main characters all feel like theyre meant to be side characters, since theres no one was worth idolizing, they were just bland and lackluster. And different from the random villain, the protagonists only act rationally within their set parameters which is detriment to a show thats supposed the delve into human psychology emphasis on human. Im too lazy at the moment lay down most of my reasons on why ghost in the shell is better but theres one thing that ghost in the shell really does a outstanding job in, its villains. From the compelling laughing man yeah imo hes one of the best antagonists anime has to offer, to the less effective yet still complex individual eleven both of them combined leave psycho pass and psycho pass 2s villains in the dust. Oh yeah psycho pass 2 yup that garbage, meanwhile the 2nd season of ghost in the shell still lives up to its predecessor in quality, (once again idk why this is a valid argument) intelligence and surpasses the first season in animation, ost and development of characters. Youve never really mentioned why u hate ghost in the shell, all youre saying is its not that intelligent (which is unquestionably false) but honestly does that really matter your perfunctory arguments are just making you pretentious and it seems like youre trying in vain to create a more mature alias on the internet than you actually are in real life. Dont spark contretemps without justifying your reasons first, in the end itll just make others perceive you as a sad person seeking for attention and not someone who can critically analyze a show

Lol nice explanation buddy. You have proven nothing with your post since it had no facts to support your argument. Good day m8

+tachyon why do i need facts when you yourself have already seen this show its futile listing all the examples and a waste of time. Youve already seen it and if you were actually paying attention you should be capable of understanding where i got my reasons from. Also im not a fan of either shows so i can equally list faults in ghost in the shell as well from its underdeveloped cast to its boring conversations that dragged the story and couldve have been written in a shorter more suitable way for its audience.

What is the point in arguing. We all know that school days is the best written anime out there. Very complex with a lot of depth.

You know psycho pass and GITS are made by the same production company right? So it is understandable that psycho pass could be better than GITS because it's made after GITS was aired.

+Isaac Yen New doesn't always mean good. There is a Lot of old anime, that is more deep, appealing, and intresting in total, than majority of new ones.

I'm aware of that. It just sometimes new technology and good plot make a story more appealing to the audience than the old anime. Just my opinion.
