I was thinking about Memphis and based on admittedly little i've seen of PSV's style there are similarities between how he was being used there and how Mahrez is being utilized by Ranieri.
In both cases the wingers receive the ball very quickly in a fast transition and quite often in a lot of space and rarely with more than one marker to beat.
From that point onwards they had to either create a chance for another forward or to quickly create space and shoot before the opposition has chance to organize its defense. It seems such a system makes wingers look better than they actually are. Messi circa 2011 would probably score every single time he got the ball in such a system.
In a possession system instead a winger has to create something when most of the times the opposition has an organized defence.
Overall this has interesting implications. If this analysis is correct it would predict that Memphis would perform better offensively under Mourinho (whether he can get him to defend to his liking is a different matter). It also implies that if United stick to possession football after LVG, Memphis would be better off going to a club which plays counter attacking football as his skill set doesn't work for this style and we would have to find another winger who is more suited to our system.
