    About eight years ago I was in an open-top jeep wrangler, driven by a woman I had been dating for several months. It was windy and it was sunny and somehow the conversation came around to how many abortions she'd had and how many abortions the women I've dated have had, and we realized that between us we would have had, at that point, six kids. There was a long, dark, moment of silence. But only because we had passed beneath a palm tree blocking the sun, and the song had ended. After that, she cranked up the next track and sped on, and we had some great sex back in her open air studio.

    Since then I've gotten a vasectomy and, oddly enough, my sex life has decreased by 100%.

    If there's a moral to this story I don't know it yet.

    Exactly. Maybe she's had two, one of his ex's had one, a fwb had one, and one other ex had two. Something like that. Women lie about birth control or being infertile sometimes. Men lie about their fertility sometimes. Condoms break. Pills are missed. Birth control fails. If these two are 40 or so, that's about 20-25 years of being sexually active, accidents happen.

    Or maybe this guy is just a baby making machine who gives zero fucks about protection and probably even has a few children being raised by one night stands and women he has forgotten about.

    Or maybe he's full of shit. Who knows? It is the internet, after all.

      I had two unplanned pregnancies with my wife, and we were using birth control both times (Condoms, then birth control pills because apparently condoms don't always work. But as it turns out, neither do birth control pills).

      For me, it was an easy choice to get a vasectomy at that point, because I was 46 years old an already had a child. I don't think I would have done it as a childless 20-something.

      So I can definitely see how a responsible person would have three unwanted pregnancies, which is all the original poster is claiming (three for him, three others for his girlfriend).

      Also, I think that if abortion is a legitimate way to avoid having an unwanted child on one occasion, and I do think this, then it is a legitimate way to avoid having an unwanted child on another occasion. The irresponsible thing would be to impose an artificial limit on the number of times that you would take action to prevent this from happening.

      The risk of having sex without a condom and/or other birth control makes it more exciting for many people. In addition to the risks, it is transgressive, and a big 'fuck you' to contemporary notions of morality and responsibility. It's even better if you grew up in a sexually repressive culture and are you're still struggling with internalized self-repression.

      I don't expect that u/SexySexyLittleForks style antics are so common in a sex-positive culture (which the USA is not).

      Edit: Not advocating for this behavior, just trying to understand it.

            Yeah, my biggest intact one that I passed was "only" 13 inches (it was at the doctor's office, so they looked at it and measured it). It was awful. 0/10 would not recommend. I was very lucky that I figured out what the symptoms were relatively early and that they didn't get huge.

            The scariest part was that we traced back everything I ate (because the CDC asks for reports on foodborne illnesses), looking at when I was sick (emails to professors asking for class time off, etc.) and figured out that it came from fish from a regular American grocery store. The doctors seemed convinced that I must've traveled to a third world country to have picked them up, but I've never even had a passport.

            Edit: oh yeah, they can migrate to other parts of your body too. I had to have an ultrasound done to make sure that other parts of my body didn't have worms in them. And the pills I had to take to get rid of the worms were $15 each after health insurance paid its share. 0/10 would not recommend the medical bills that came after that experience.

              That's not the whole debate, though. Another argument is that, in the same way as you wouldn't be compelled to donate a kidney to your child, even if their life depended on it, you shouldn't be forced to carry a child inside of you, even if that child is a person and depends on your body for survival.

              I guess it's an attempt to get around the very difficult question of how to precisely define a human being by simply disregarding it and focusing on the mother's rights. Though personally I don't find it very persuasive as I think you're absolutely required (morally and sometimes legally) to care for the people around you, or inside you. Insofar as they're people.
