Man Ciy v Arsenal tomorrow - why a draw is the best result for United (self.reddevils)

Currently, here is the order:

  • Arsenal: 67
  • City: 64
  • United: 63

If Arsenal WIN, here is what it will look like (yes I am assuming we win):

  • Arsenal: 70
  • City: 64
  • United: 66

Then we go into gameday 38 with an advantage over City, and we can finish 4th. If they DRAW, here is the scenario for us:

  • Arsenal: 68
  • City: 65
  • United: 66

In this scenario, if Arsenal slip up against Villa on the final day (not likely but possible), we could potentially take 3rd spot, and we'd still have the advantage over City.

In either case, 69 points (two wins) would take us over the line, but in the 'DRAW' scenario, we could put pressure on Arsenal as well and might even pip them to 3rd.

edit: The downside if City draw is that we could go into the final day only 1 point ahead of them. If we lose to Bournemouth and City only draw to Swansea, we drop into 5th because of GD. Thanks to /u/Willszz1 for pointing this out.

People fail to realize that if West Ham win today they'll be a point behind us when we play them midweek. Its the last game at the Boleyn and they have a chance to finish higher than the most successful English club of all time

I'd rather the game go into the 85th minute with Arsenal winning 2-0 than the score being 1-1. For that reason I hope Arsenal go 50 goals up before half time.

Also worth mentioning if City win. We need to win our last two games and hope either of City or Arsenal draw or lose on the final day

Your logic of this being the best result is dependent on Villa getting a result against Arsenal...Very optimistic.

City being on 64 or 65 points after tomorrow is practically irrelevant to us. So really the choice is whether Arsenal go into the final day out of reach or only 2 points ahead.

Not really. If they draw they'll be 2 points ahead. Assuming we win our game in hand we'd only be 1 ahead so if we lose on the final day, and City draw, we'll go behind. However with a City loss that scenario can't happen

Assuming we win is a big assumption. West Ham will be looking for the CL football too if City drop points, right? It's not going to be a game where they have nothing to play for.
