When will the insanity end?

The FDA could limit the sale of candy bars, and also require warning labels.

"Milk Chocolate is a dangerous substance which contributes to Obesity, Tooth Decay, and Diabetes."

They're consumed items, and people expose themselves and others to the product and byproducts. This alone causes the industry to fall under the jurisdiction of regulatory oversight.

Would the world really fall apart if we just left these things alone? I understand government's compulsion to regulate every damn thing there is, but I really don't give a shit if it's regulated or not; I'm going to buy the product either way. I've looked at the chemistry. The carrier used in the pens is safe to use as long as it is consumed as intended (not combusted, only boiled).

The FDA has effectively banned the sale of e-cigs and cigars by mom and pops. Now only Big Tobacco will control the game. Dirty, disgusting, greedy crony-capitalism at its worst.

From USATODAY: That means nearly every e-cigarette on the market — and every different flavor and nicotine level — would require a separate application for federal approval. Each application could cost $1 million or more, says Jeff Stier, an e-cigarette advocate with the National Center for Public Policy Research and industry officials.

How did they ban it for Mom and Pops

Because only the largest companies (in any industry) can afford to pay enough to be able to meet government standards.

You are over-complicating how 'smoke juice' is made. You take some nicotine in a solution of either Vegtable Glycerin or Propylene Glycol (or a mixture of the two) and sell it to a mom and pop shop. Then that shop buys some flavoring and you have your product.

The 'base' of the mix will get regulated, and the price will go up. This is made industrially anyway so that's just another step for them. Currently its at something like 7 cents for a millimeter (figure 10ml lasts you 4 days if you are a serious smoker) but they sell massive amounts of the stuff so I'm unsure how much that will change the price, lets say it doubles it. They can't just charge whatever they'd like because of a unique e-cig problem, only the nicotine is a regulated substance and by itself its not hard to get. And the fluid is painful easy to make. Seriously, you did harder stuff than making 'smoke juice' in high school chemistry.

The flavoring will change. They will probably redevelop e-cigs to do that during the vaping process and you'll have to add in the flavoring separately. So we have one thing for the FDA to regulate, not each and every variation in the store, and the store can still sell the flavorings.

More seriously, a much larger percentage of e-cig users still make their own product. If the regulations get too tight, I can foresee a scenario where everyone just make their own fluid to bypass this entirely. The components required are not regulated to near the extent that the product as a whole is.

When you go in to a vape shop, they usually have like a hundred flavors and then each flavor has 5 or 6 nicotine strengths. They combine them on the fly using a special dosing machine. These flavors are usually locally made by small business folk and hobbyists. Most vapor shops aren't carrying the big tobacco products. Now, every combination (all 500-600 of them) will need to to go through an FDA approval process. Each one of them costs hundreds of thousands, takes 4 to 5 years, and maybe you get an approval. The gov't has unilaterally crushed all competition and variety. Follow the money... My guess is that all seekings for approval will be denied because it benefits both the big tobacco and anti smoking lobby to cut out vaping. I swear to god, their main argument is that children are using them.

PLEASE, SOMEBODY! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

My thinking?

Big tobacco has lost millions of customers due to improved public health consciousnessand these little devices. Both of my boyfriend's parents quit smoking by using vape pens. They don't like this. Smoking isn't cool anymore.

Solution?

Get the nicotine approved by the FDA and sell that in store; then sell the flavors online. Let the consumer mix them at home.

There are no credible studies that show that smoking ecigs in anyway is healthier. It's too early after their popular usage to determine that and it takes a long time for it to be determined since the harmful effects of smoking are accumulated across decades. Not really that important to the larger topic, but important nonetheless.

Also mom and pops are a lot more likely to sell to underage kids, so that was part of the reasoning, which is a fair point.

I think this is less about tobacco industry corruption, and more about a poor understanding about economics and the personal views of the legislators.

Not saying it not justifiable to be upset about, because I am as well.

I've always been carded. Not sure if it was already the law or not. We know how much the federal gov't loves to double down on existing laws. Sounds like nonsense.

Here's a lively discussion amongst chemists about the effects of boiling and burning propylene glycol/glycerin: http://chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/14771/how-does-propylene-glycol-glycerin-form-formaldehyde-acetaldehyde-when-vaporized

Since its the only ingredient besides nicotine, I'd wager that this stuff is as safe as eating a steak. As long as the liquid only boils, it should be fine.
