"Lahm believes van Gaal had “high expectations.” But, he argues, the coach was unwilling to budge from his philosophies and or try new things. Under him, defender Lahm writes, Bayern Munich neglected defence and focused on scoring as many goals as possible.

On many occasions, Lahm says he spoke with van Gaal about the situation. But, he said the coach pretended to listen, then seemed to ignore him.

Bayern Munich skipper Philipp Lahm is not shocked by the news that head coach Louis van Gaal will leave the club at the end of the season and made it clear that FCB simply can't afford a season without success.

"That is the way things are when you are at Bayern - if you are not successful, then you have to face the consequences and I think that is absolutely right," Lahm was quoted as saying by Bild.

"Bayern have the aim to be the number one all the time and always win titles. If that does not happen, then questions are asked of everything and that is what has happened this season."

Lahm says it was the Dutchman who kickstarted Bayern's recent success at home and abroad.

"He introduced a clearer focus on tactics and our modern style was born."

Oh absolutely. There is no doubt Lahm credits him for the start of Bayern having a new tactical approach. But it's also made clear by him, as well as others, that it wasn't until Heynckes came in that Bayern truly kicked on.

It's not uncommon for players to be enthralled with new managers, but it seems Lahm definitely knew that van Gaal was restricted in what he could do.

he was the right man at the right time for Bayern

That makes a lot of sense and he did stabilize them and bring them success after the Klinsmann debacle. Which is what I think most people give LVG credit for at United. But Bayern realized when it was time to move on to someone better.
