Relative to the hype, I'd say Memphis. Gutted he didn't have a killer year. There's even been rumours he could be off in the Summer which would be gutting.

Has to be. I can't imagine how fucked we'd be without Martial. I think it became immediately apparent to the coaching staff we'd be midtable and without goals if we relied on Memphis which is why we payed so far over the odds for Martial at the last minute.

I thought 10-15 was likely/expected and optimistically thought he could crack that 20-25 range. 2 league goals is shocking and so far below standards.

Martial's ended up being the player I thought we were buying in Memphis.

.

Rojo's the worst player in our squad and I say this every match day and am usually vindicated in my appraisal. But I never really expected much from him so his performances aren't that far below expectations.

I still think Cleverley, eternal scapegoat

ok, honestly, lad has improved massively, good for him

I'm a big Phil Jones fan and the fact that he has struggled so much with injuries is so disappointing, I thought this was his year...

Shame people are downvoting a post that's clearly sparking some discussion

I'll throw Januzaj out there since no one else has. I think a lot of people, myself included, want to see him succeed as he was basically the lone bright spot of the Moyes era. Between the disappointing loan to Dortmund and now the injury it's been another season to forget for him.

[–]LDN2016 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I don't think anyone really expected much from him tbh. Pretty much wrote his season off the moment the Dortmund transfer happened.

It's a shame, I was hoping he'd kick on from preseason. He had that worldy of a goal against Barca, bulked up training with Shaw and was bullying centre backs.

I had a feeling Memphis would flop from the start, so I will say Mata instead. Mata is supposed to be one of our senior players and he just hasn't stepped up. He's also one of our highest ever transfers and on a lot of money, but he just hasn't justified it. I expected a very big season from him, so imo the most disappointing player of the year is Juan Mata.

8 goals in 50 games is very poor considering the numbered Mata has put up in the past, Heck in 2013 he scored over 20 goals and had over 30 assists!

You also have to take in consideration the different formations/tactics when comparing to stats from other seasons

Mata is the type of player required the entire team to build around him. If he didn't have the services, he's just... not good enough. In Van Gaal's current system, he seemed only to step up when playing alongside Herrera and Tony V.

After all, Mata is like your first love. He is very sweat and you love him. But deep down, you know he is not the one.

To be fair i don't think Mata has really been given the chance at his fav position and also a run of game at it. He's always been shifted to the left and right.

He has been underwhelming every time he has played as a no10 though, just doesn't influence games enough and is a bit weak.

[–]LDN2016 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

a bit weak.

understatement of the century.

[–]scotty1987 11ポイント12ポイント  (6子コメント)

Obviously Memphis but Mata as well. He adds nothing but the amility to such an attack dry.

EDIT: 0 already? Oh, I forgot. I badmouthed Mata. Hugs, Scott

He has 8 goals and 8 assists, what do you mean.

[–]LDN2016 10ポイント11ポイント  (3子コメント)

His stat padding no longer hides his awful performances. Let's start with the positives. He's got a great touch, his short passing game really helps with possession retention and he moves around in tight spaces well when you want to retain the ball. He's a good if not great FK taker. Once in a blue moon he can pick out a good long pass.

Now let's face reality.

  • He's an enormous defensive liability. Mediocre players can bypass him with ease. We can just about cover him with Valencia, no chance with any other RB.

  • Mata has 0 workrate on attack and defence. Not that he's lazy, he just doesn't have the stamina to keep up an Effective press like Martial, Lingard, Valencia, Rashford, Herrera can. Even an unfit Rooney and lumbering Fellaini does better.

  • He doesn't provide width. That Liverpool goal aside he's never been effective down the wing. The fullback on his side either tucks in tight and makes it harder for everyone in central areas or bombs forward pinning the entire team back.

  • He's a surprisingly bad crosser. People complain about Darmian, Valencia and Lingard but Mata's genuinely a worse crosser than all 3

  • He doesn't and can't make dangerous runs. Just look how much more penetrative Lingard is.

  • He's 0 individual threat. He literally has not beaten a player 1v1 since he moved here.

  • He's only an ok finisher. For all my stat padding comments he's actually quite wasteful despite his good positioning. Much better finisher than Lingard but still pretty bad. Especially when he attempts a volley - highlight reels full of absolutely shocking efforts on goal from him.

He plays worse at 10 than RW.

  • He's slow making passing decisions - gaps close and good runs get wasted.

  • He's painfully one footed and takes about 5-6 touches whenever it's on the wrong foot to right himself before passing which also kills moves.

  • More to the point he dithers so often when playing centrally and is weak so he often gets barged over and loses the ball.

  • He doesn't have the pace to track back and recover it like Rooney and Ander can.

  • He kills every counter attack. He's just too damn slow.

  • Where's the playmaking? Lingard's played more through balls in the last 3 matches than Mata has his entire time at United. Carrick and Blind play more cutting through balls through the middle despite basically playing as CB. Ander has no issues finding through balls when he plays 10.

Memphis

[–]DevilxAceRooney 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Probably Memphis, but I think we forget that he's still young and it takes players a while to get used to the Prem (especially if LvG gives him 10 minutes per game!).

Him aside, I've been genuinely depressed of Rojo's performances this season. I was hoping that he'd be our starting CB partnering Smalling for seasons to come, but after his injury and the inconsistent runs at LB, I don't know if he's ever going to be our starting CB :(

[–]youknowmyyysteezRooney 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Rojo shouldn't be in the running for most disappointing. even smalling took time to hit his top form.

[–]IndianizeLVG 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

Players getting slated as disappointments are the only ones who take a tiny bit of risk in our attack. The entire team is disappointing when they choose the safer pass to maintain possession. Exciting players like Memphis, Rojo, Herrera, Varela and Darmian pay the price for wanting to attack. Meanwhile Rooney (while playing in the front), Carrick, Mata and Valencia, despite being veterans, have not helped our attacking players at all.

I don't know what should happen for me to see a Schneiderlin/Herrera midfield. I wish we just kept the team that beat Arsenal.

[–]LDN2016 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

Rooney, Carrick and Valencia's return has been the only reason we've had any sort of form lately.

I think it's blindingly apparent they are massive upgrades on the players they replace.

[–]lollipopkan 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Mata and rooney. I understand rooney has been not performing up to par for several years but the amount of hype going around him compared to his actual performance makes him one of the, if not, the most disappointing player of the year.
