Even poachers are concerned about chronic hearing damage. What a thoughtful group.

Fun fact! One of the reasons suppressors are hard to obtain in the US compared to other countries is that in the depression the government was worried about people using them to poach.

Prior to that people could order them out of magazines.

This is one of the reasons we have to jump through so many hoops today in order to obtain one.

Edit: a lot of people are asking for a reference. Here is a link to the 3min commercial for the documentary that stated it. I couldn't find a whole episode.

http://www.downrange.tv/blog/on-midway-usas-gun-stories-the-history-of-suppressors/35707/

If anyone can find the whole episode let us know it's definitely worth the watch.

Got a citation for that?

Every anti suppressor argument ever made when the discussion of legalizing them during hunting starts up in state houses.

These people dont realize that crossbows are even quieter.

Ok well we need to put sirens on crossbows so that people know when they are being fired. /s

Don't you go giving them any ideas... Even sarcastically, they've been known to go with dumber ones!

but think of the children

fine, sirens on them too.

If you were really worried about the children they'd require a background check to obtain them

The right to bear children should be infringed.

What are children, basically walking/shitting/puking sirens anyway?

That argument drives me up the wall...

I heard back in world-war era, somebody started using whistles on the bombs so they screeched as they fell towards their targets on ground. They were terrifying, the whistle sounds getting louder, doppler shifting, until boom!

I could easily see the same effect for modern crossbow fights, if the world ever came to that form of warfare.

They make those for compound and recurve shooting for target practice I think. Also the Mongols used those for intimidation. They exist, but not for hunting. Notifying your prey that you're coming is a bad idea.

It sounded to me like he was referring to the NFA. Lots of people say poaching was part of the discussion in forming the NFA. So I usually ask if they have a source because I'm not aware of any record of what was discussed.

it wasn't necessarily poaching game. it was poaching cattle, which was a relative problem at the time, and still to a point today, I hear of it mostly with bows though nowadays.

Probably because it's a lot easier to take game with a scoped rifle than it is with a crossbow. A deer can be taken from hundreds of yards with a rifle, whereas a crossbow requires you to get much closer (silently).

Aren't crossbows illegal to hunt with in a lot of places?

I don't think a poacher cares.

in fact, I'm pretty sure that's an entry level requirement for poachers

Not referencing poachers.

/u/jeffco555 said crossbows are quieter in reference to government discussion about the legality of suppressors.

I was just saying that both the suppressor and the crossbow are illegal in places.

Why would a crossbow be banned if regular compound bows aren't? It's the same operating principle, right?

Oddly enough, crossbows are considered a firearm by fish and game in California.

Not OP, but I've been searching all over online, and Googles book search for anything based around the National Firearms Act which regulated suppressors; and I can't find any source backing up his claim.

This research paper made a comment on the matter

The 1934 congressional debates provide no explanation about why silencers were licensed. Paulson (1996:10) opines that during the Great Depression, poaching game was thought to be a problem and silencers were licensed because of this concern.

So the debate transcripts never discussed why silencers/suppressors were added to the bill. I don't have access to Paulson's book Silencers: History and Performance, but I would be curious to see if he has an actual source for his claim, or simply decided the explanation made sense in his head, and decided to use it.

Check the edit. It's the best I can do on mobile. Like I said earlier I heard it on a documentary.

Outdoor channel Midway USA

I'm at work. I remember seeing it on a show about the history of suppressors. The narrator was old guy from the show criminal minds. I will see if I can find it later.

It was a good documentary

I think you could buy Maxim's original suppressor for something like $8.50 when it was first invented

[–]captain_craptain 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

http://americansuppressorassociation.com/ Let's change those shit rules and make it so we can order them out of a magazine again.

I can't find any actual source for this, do you mind sharing yours? Seems to make sense, but I've been digging around on Google and all I can find is several pro-second amendment pages with the quote, but no source. It appears the silencer part of the National Firearms act was added last minute, but I can't find any reasons as to why.

How is Italy northern Europe?

It's the title on the Imgur album. He can't change that because it probably isn't his.

That's my imgur account. Edited the title for the sake of clarity.

Gotcha.

It's cold in northern Italy. So much so in the Italian Alps, recent global warming has caused a thaw revealing frozen World War I corpses and weapons...

Maybe it's not the most northern part of Europe, but it's north to some one.

That's cool (not the global warming part). Any links on this. I'd like to read more on this.

HOW FUCKING DARE YOU POST THAT SITE. YOU DIDN'T MAKE THAT, YOU DON'T WORK AT TELEGRAPH SO YOU CAN'T POST IT ANYWHERE. HOW DARE YOU CLAIM TO REPORT ON GLACIERS WHEN ALL YOU DID WAS STEAL A WEBSITE. KARMAWHORE REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

/s

Wow, there was even one of those "Stradeveri" guns someone was posting about earlier. Those are like 2500 euros, they can afford one of those but not a hunting license.

I've heard of people poaching for the sake of poaching; they consider it exciting, a rush in and of itself. "The forbidden fruit is always more delicious."

It is not always a question of money for some.

I have a friend of a friend who works over there and it is about the $ for him they can make big bucks selling wild game.

Poaching is more than just without a license, It could include:

  • hunting out of season
  • hunting on land without permission or that doesn't allow hunting period
  • Hunting an animal that is protected

None of those necessarily have to do with being poor, and if they're after protected animals, they may in fact be of fairly high means.

I came across these while looking for images of the Stradivari.

I saw an episode of North Woods Law or something similar and the suspect said "You'll never stop me from hunting." Some people may not be eligible for a hunting license due to prior violations, wish to over-hunt, or hunt for animals out of season / that they aren't allowed to hunt.

[–]Pennstate_rapeteam 47ポイント48ポイント  (7子コメント)

Looks straight out of fallout 4

Came here to say this -- the electrical tape grip on what is basically a pipe pistol sent me over the top.

[–]Pennstate_rapeteam 9ポイント10ポイント  (0子コメント)

And the short hunting rifles. Crazy.

I'm always out of adhesive...

You can make some at a cooking station -- "vegetable starch" can be scrapped for 5 adhesives. If you have a little farm and some water, you could open yourself up a little wasteland glue factory.

I just became a water baron. I had so many water purifiers I was selling off the excess and I could literally buy out every vendor.

That's what I thought. Looks like a short stock hunting rifle with a medium scope.

Fucking noobs didn't even take gun nut 2 or 3.

A series of weapons caches confiscated by various Law Enforcement agencies in Italy and Switzerland. There seems to be a distinct preference for suppressed single shot rifles that can be broken down into smaller units for easier concealment, with one particular example being disguised as a walking stick.

Telescopic sights also appear to be the rule, with plenty of example of sophisticated night vision scopes in evidence.

6th picture ... haven't expected Stradivari gun

Middle and south Europe. Italy and Switzerland is nowhere near the north.

That poor poor XP-100. You deserved better..

k31 represent!

Of course they were poaching, GP11 isn't cheap.

Neither are the rifles anymore, every time any surplus comes in it seems the same 3 people buy them and toss them on gunbroker @ 600 a pop for very rough damaged rifles anymore :(

I wanted one last year but I was saving for a house, now that I have the means I can't justify spending that much for a 100 year old milsurp that isn't an M1 garand, which you can get for that price... I'd just buy more garands.

[–]Katapesh_Express 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

What game were they poaching?

[–]foods_that_are_round 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

Why....why do I want some of these?

K31 for when they actually want to hit their target.

Walnut even. Ugh. I hate these fuck bags even more.

What a fantastic album. Thank you for sharing.

Is picture 10 a breech loading .22 pistol with an enormous scope? What would you hunt with that?

http://i.imgur.com/Moxqgyu.jpg

The scope isn't that big, and it's got a wire stock so it can be shouldered. 22LRs are used to poach deer with head shots. Poachers aren't hung up on ethics.

Wouldn't that fuck it up as a trophy? I always assumed people who poached were trophy hunters. What else are they doing it for, the meat? It seems like the grocery store would be cheaper...

Poaching a deer costs you .10 cents while the equivalent weight in beef/chicken/pork at the store is about $250 or more... You tell me now if the store was the better choice when your kids are starving.

I seem to recall hearing that the poaching in Europe is for the meat. Gets sold to restaurants, etc. along with many people poaching for their own food. Lots of small birds and other small mammals.

Collecting trophies to show off as a poacher seems ill-advised.

The fearsome and rare Swiss Albino Squirrel.

Rabbits, and birds.

Any small game that you might want to hunt out to ~100 yards.

I have that same game camera. Feels good to use what the "pros" use.

Even criminals agree that the K31 needs no modification.

That first gun is Star Wars as fuck.

Wasn't one of those a Thomson Center/Contender? Those are sweet match guns, no?

Gun Nut perk fully leveled

Who goes hunting with a fucking Rapier?

Poachers really hate stocks.

I want a threaded K31 now.

[–]Atamis 0

I was kinda expecting Mexican cartel levels of arms. Quiet the resourceful use to make everything a takedown, though I imagine everyone with one becomes a suspect.

what is the gun in the first photo?
