Kind-hearted Manchester United star Luke Shaw steps in to ensure dying fan gets to Wembley for the FA Cup final

The 20-year-old was so touched by the M.E.N’s story about William Moore that he offered to donate tickets for May 21 final

Manchester United star Luke Shaw has offered to make sure an elderly fan with a terminal brain tumour gets his dying wish - to watch the Reds battle it out at the FA Cup at Wembley.

The 20-year-old was so touched by the M.E.N’s story about William Moore that he offered to donate tickets for May 21 final.

The left-back, signed for £27m from Southampton two years ago, and who is recovering from a broken leg, said it would be ‘my pleasure to get him to watch the game’.

William, 80, from Newton Heath, is now mulling over the offer and dozens of others from kind-hearted Reds who contacted the M.E.N. after reading our story.

Fans have offered to give up their own seats as well as transport poorly William to and from Wembley.

Three weeks ago doctors diagnosed William with an aggressive and terminal brain tumour.

Since then his three daughters have been in a desperate race against time to get him a ticket for the showpiece final against Crystal Palace.

The grandfather had been a regular at Old Trafford until fifteen years ago when he became his wife Joan’s full-time carer. She had dementia.

When she died in December aged 80, he had more time on his hands and Wiliam’s family wanted to indulge his passion for the Reds.

But that wish became more urgent when he was diagnosed with a fatal brain tumour.

William’s daughter Lorraine Phillips, 45, from Glossop, said: “I’m completely overwhelmed and a little bit star-struck that someone from the team has come along to help.”

Lorraine will now consider Shaw’s offer as well as a number of others before deciding which will be best for her father, who will need to be cared for during the trip.

She added: “I can’t believe the amount of people coming forward. It’s just remarkable when there is an allocation of just 28,000 tickets that people are willing to give up their seats for us. It’s wonderful. Their generosity astounds me.

“Dad will be in floods of tears when I tell him.”

Retired water board ‘listener’ William became an avowed United fan after meeting and becoming friends with ‘Busby Babe’ Duncan Edwards while the pair did their national service as 18-year-olds.

The pair played football together on their Army base in Oswestry.
