He seems to be better out wide. He creates a lot of problems for defenders when he's coming in. When he's central he gets closed down so quickly.

I also likes that he completely occupies the opposition fullback to the extent that they are much less of an attacking threat. He completely nullified Coleman in the Everton game and gave him a nightmare in his own box.

On the winger.

As clinical as he is at striker, he's also a great creator of chances. He's good enough out there that we can have our cake and eat it.

All that you said and also, that LvG said he isn't too eager to make runs behind defences and as a striker, that's not as great because it limits the passes from midfielders and such and, we also have Rashford/Rooney who can make those runs.

He also seems to be doing better out wide on the left in comparison to up front in the middle anyway.

I think Rashford is better as number 9 surprisingly. Even when he doesn't get much touches he still contributes to the build up play and counter attack like last game against Leicester. Also, he doesn't need many chances to score which is really good for a player his age...

He can definitely be a false 9.

I know inverted wingers have been all the rage for the last few years but I'd still like to see him develop into a striker. His hold up play was excellent during his run at the 9 early in the season and hes lethal in the box. I guess it really depends who we buy, ideally we could get another player with similar abilities and have them switch fluidly throughout the game.

Playing wide he gets way more chances to run at people and actually using his technical abilities and pace.

I haven't been impressed watching him play centrally, where he is too easy for the opposing team to close down, and his hold up play isn't good enough in my opinion to justify playing him there.

Great idea for a thread, I've argued this one with a couple of my buddies before.

He should absolutely be developed as a striker. There are a few reasons I think this:

  1. He's a natural finisher, whose ability to score will only get better over time. I want my scorers in front of the net at all times.

  2. He's very good at dribbling in small, crowded areas with his quick feet, which will bode very well for him in the middle of the box to create his own shot, and not a lot of players have the level of skill he does in this area. As opposed to a winger, where there is much more space and usually just one defender outside. He obviously does the job on the wing too, but beating a person in space is something Memphis can do, and were not exactly maximizing his ability as a winger, which leads me to my next point...

  3. Memphis Depay will come around next season (and no, im not just saying that because of the Robben quote that is topping the subreddit today). Its pretty obvious that Martial, if developed as a winger, will be a very, very good player. But why would we want to develop him there when we can have Memphis there, and can have him as a world class striker? Next season, everyone will talk about how "they always knew memphis will come good." Whelp, this is the post I will link to prove I said it.

Martial's got the entire package for a complete striker. He has speed, finishing, good hold up play, and a nose for the goal. I think people look at the top class strikers now like Lewa, Benzema, Saurez, Kane etc. and it's much harder to associate their playstyle with Martial's, than it is to the playstyle of the top class wingers. I think this fact contributes to people thinking he should be a winger. However, just because he has speed and can beat a defender doesn't necessarily mean he needs to play there.

Wingers, so hot right now.

Right now, and with LVG's tactics, I like him out wide. Eventually I prefer him to play centrally. His build is far more suited to be playing in the centre. While he's obviously got pace to play out wide, he's not as agile as I'd like a winger to be, and his strength would be better used inside.

As far as LVG's tactics go, I think he limits his striker too much. The same was the case with Rooney. Neither he or Martial are suited to be a focal point, they're far better if allowed the freedom to drop deep or move wide. That wouldn't really work unless someone is there to move into the gap they'd leave, but LVG likes his wingers to stay out wide.

Striker, top class strikers are so hard to find nowadays. He should lead the line and improve there.
