For example, I want in the third act to have the entire police force and army accompany the Ghostbusters to the final battle but since our villain only wants to deal with the Ghostbusters and wants to make the government look ridiculous, he possesses the entire police and army forces and makes them do a big ridiculous dance number in the middle of Fifth Avenue, thus neutralizing them (and delighting himself).

The Mask anyone?

Maybe I was too young, but I thought it worked in the mask.

It totally works.

Yeah, the Mask was primarily an over-the-top comedy. Ghostbusters is deadpan comedy, it'll never work.

Ghostbusters is deadpan comedy

Really?

Getting a blowjob from a ghost, a giant marshmallow man, constantly getting slimed, Rick Moranis getting attacked outside a restaurant etc.

Ghostbusters was extremely physical. The only way you can justify it being deadpan is Bill Murray's sense of humour. And even then, that's just because how Bill Murray is and I would say its one of the more physical comedies he's done.

That's a weird take... Ramis, Aykroyd and Hudson all played super deadpan characters.

With Murray, that's the whole core cast, sure physical comedy happened TO them, but they weren't out doing pratfalls themselves.

Also because Jim Carrey is a bomb ass singer and dancer

[–]Cross_of_Coronado 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Well it might work. Just not for me.

If it's Thriller I'll let it pass

Oh, it so fucking will be Thriller. What else could such a dance number be?

Thriller in Times Square.

Seriously, that would be amazing

[–]Late_Dent_ArthurDent 19ポイント20ポイント  (0子コメント)

Certainly sounds like someone's "delighting himself"...

Honestly that seems like something that would have happened in the original movies.

They actually used this on the Ghostbusters at Universal Studios Park. Beetlejuice would confront them and make them dance.

Exactly, it's no more ridiculous than a giant marshmallow in my mind.

There's a certain practicality that makes the Marshmallow Man work. He was made of marshmallow. He caught on fire like a marshmallow. He was the manifestation of a happy thought twisted to destroy them, and they played that idea up to be as "realistic" as possible.

A dance number just sounds dumb. Where would the music come from? Would there be music, or would it be that they are just acting out choreography in creepy silence. Would they bump or trip on things?

How could they possibly explain the music in a comedy about ghosts?!!?

That's the wrong way to think about Ghostbusters, at least the original.

The original was set up as a grounded action horror movie with funny characters. The humor came out through the absurd situations and how the characters reacted to them, but it wasn't built as a comedy.

Ghost Michael Jackson leading them in Thriller

You heard it here folks; you can't care about the details because it's just a comedy! Checkmate movie buffs!

Ghost possess a radio. Ghost makes the sound itself. Ghost makes the people sing the song perfectly (See Beetlejuice)

I am not saying they don't have to explain it... I am saying they can fairly literally explain it in any way they want and it fits in universe. Hell the Staypuft Marshmallow Man apparently came out of thin air... why couldn't a ghost make music come out of thin air...

Ah yeah - you're right. Read a bit too quickly and didn't get the full gist of your comment. Thought it was one of those "it's a movie about ghosts it doesn't have to make sense" type of rebuttals. My bad.

Plus, the ghost ridiculing and controlling the people who are there to support the Ghostbusters seems like a very intimidating thing to do to try and demotivate them and make them scared.

NEVER!!!! A DANCE NUMBER?!?!?!?! Both you and Paul Feig are wrong and are defacto slandering the serious, award deserving, tone of Ghostbusters 2 where they had the Statue of Liberty walk because of the "good vibes" from the song Higher & Higher by Howard Huntsberry. It "walked" not "danced!!!!!" I'm so mad right now it's like I fell into a subway system filled with slime that amplifies emotions, although that would obviously be silly and nothing something that would be found in a Ghostbusters movie.

Couldn't agree more! Ghostbusters is bar-none THE most serious film I've ever watched and by adding "jokes" to the film, Paul Feig is effectively ruining the collective childhoods of adult men all over.

Meh. Done right it could indeed be funny and creepy (if they're singing but there's no music pointlessly on the soundtrack). Probably will be stupid, but Feig IS great and didn't cut that miserable trailer himself.

Sounds like maybe Feig WAS great. This may be a disaster in the making.

George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were great. They still made Indiana Jones 4.

From the trailer there is a brief cut of a bunch of military and policy haphazardly forming up in front of each other that makes me think this is going to happen. I'm more bothered by absolutely horrible the formation is. Everyone is just standing where ever they damn well please, disregarding the people with guns pointing at the back of their heads

Now I understand how shitty movies are made.

Literally what I said under my breath as I read.

What's next? A talking raccoon and a sentient tree? That'd never work in a movie.

[–]BritishHobor/Movies Veteran 120

Does this not prove beyond doubt that this movie was not formed as a female-led gimmick? That instead, Paul Feig was given the film and then cast four actresses he finds funny?

Yeah the fact that the characters should be women was just dropped in there in the middle. It didn't form a central part of the pitch. He goes into a lot of detail about the different ways this film is different from the original but barely mentions the gender swap.

Yeah the fact that the characters should be men was just dropped in there in the middle. It didn't form a central part of the pitch.

Gender should be irrelevant. Who cares if they're men or women? It's a reboot, they don't have to be exactly the same. The story just needs to be entertaining.

No! It's a big feminist conspiracy to steal away movies from men! It goes even deeper than this!

I think it'd be a discussion point with another director, but it was basically a certainty with Feig, he's said on multiple occasions that he prefers working with female casts. I think it was also a part of making it "different" from the original, but I don't think the whole idea of the reboot came around with females in mind.

No. Because they clearly just swapped the gender and kept everything else the same including the race and number of Ghostbusters.

[–]BritishHobor/Movies Veteran 0

That in no way refutes my point.

    [–]BritishHobor/Movies Veteran -1

    Why?

Our world isn’t the only place in the universe with bad and dangerous beings that have died, you know. There’s a lot of bored dead monsters out there who are just looking for something to do.

This sounds... Really silly. it could have potential, but it would be tricky to pull off right.

This is actually the only thing in the entire pitch I feel comfortable with besides the Cecily Strong thing which I think is hilarious.

Do it similar to Dragon Age where the Demons look like and feel like aliens, but are simply called demons because that's what the world understands.

It would explain why certain ghosts like Slimer look inhuman, and would be logically consistent so long as they don't delve too far into it.

and - in what I think could be a billion dollar idea - recruits the ghosts of evil beings from other parts of the universe - yes, ghost aliens!

    what the fuck?

This reads like a movie that an 8 year old would pitch to their buddies in the school canteen.

Ghost aliens? A giant dance number? And how the hell did he get to Peter Dinklage from Ted Kazinski?!

The original premise for Ghostbusters was also very very different than what it ended up being. Dan Akroyd based it on his own belief in the mystical and he wanted it to be about him and Jim Belushi being Ghostmashers and jumping from dimension to dimension fighting with magic wands.

It was only when Harold Ramis came on board that the movie changed drastically.

Movie pitches usually do sound like kids talking about an idea because they are usually very basic and is usually the writer talking about what he thinks would be cool. They are just the concept jumping around in their head.

As in he wanted Dinklage to play him.

That does sound pretty silly to be fair. Remember the first films were preposterous, but had a brilliant cast to play with that silliness?

Now if the dialogue isn't properly funny and the cast isn't funny either, this film will be just plain, preposterous, awful shit.

Good thing Melissa McCarthy is the next Bill Murray! Oh, wait. Shit.

Come on now. Kristen Wigg is the next Bill Murray... McCarthy is filling the Akroyd roll.

    Peter Dinklage

    is so hot right now!

No idea if they're still going this route, but--

The villain in the new movie is being played by Neil Casey, a fantastic improv comic. You can see him here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyeFemMm9s0

Blue shirt, white stripes. The guy with the Shakespearian voice.

I'm not at all excited for the new Ghostbusters, but I'm excited to see him get an opportunity to showcase his talent on screen.

We should all keep in mind that these titans of Hollywood are not necessarily creative geniuses or even talented writers. Success in any field is 80% showing up, and another 15% being a jerk about doing it your way. If it sounds like something you'd come up with in 8th grade, that's because you could have.

Since when is Paul Feig a titan of Hollywood? The real titans actually are creative geniuses.

This movie comes out in 2 months, there has only been one trailer. Most of the actors have been silent on it. I havent seen any type of promotional push.

I think Sony is already doing damage control and saving on advertising because they know it's going to flop.

The fact that there's only been one trailer doesn't mean anything. We only got Civil War trailer 2 in March and the film came out in April so we'll see trailer two very soon. Plus, Sony probably didn't want to market it in competition with the marketing pushes for Civil War and BvS. It'll ramp up in the next few weeks.

Ironically, the biggest marketing push for Civil War was Batman V Superman's failure.

Some interesting ideas. I'm not convinced that a dance number is the best idea but maybe it'll be one of those things that sounds ridiculous on paper but in execution, will be kinda amusing.

a Cecily Strong type character always saying terrible things about them in press conferences and then apologizing to them behind the scenes, even though her public attacks on them get more and more personal. “I’m sorry, I just have to make it sound convincing.”

That sounds like a hilarious running gag, to be honest. I hope it made it into the final movie.

Yeah, I'd love to see that idea. Be a cool twist

Sounds okay. The excessive hate for this movie needs to stop. I feel like this will do better with great action, impressive CGI and good scares. So far, I'm seeing none of that.

    Hopefully it will improve.

Why does the excessive hate for this movie need to stop?

    [–]Shakespearean_Rumba -3ポイント-2ポイント  (1子コメント)

    Because it's exhausting.

    Exhausting? Please, elaborate.

The movie looks like pure garbage. It's not excessive hate to say that.

I read 'This first film' and got a strange feeling in my stomach, like I was falling.

There was actually plans for a Ghostbusters cinematic universe, where they'd have a few sequels, a male ghostbusters and then have them team up. Guess that's not happening lol.

It's probably a common practice in Hollywood now to include ideas for a sequel in your pitch.

Is this... is this for real? This is honestly some of the lamest shit I've ever read. Are people going to continue to defend this?

yes, because Paul Feig's movies have all received good reviews. I'm sure lots of movies/books sound like shit in just reading their bare bones outline form. I don't see the point in bashing this movie until the reviews are actually out. Also, a lot of his past movies had terrible trailers, especially Spy, and the movies still turned out great.

The truly scary thing is that he seems to be setting this garbage up for future installments. Hopefully it'll tank and that will be the end of it. I'd love another Ghostbusters movie, but "not like dis".

I'm not sure if it is funny because it's actually a real, serious thing, or it's funny because it's so painfully terrible sounding, or both.

Is this what all professional pitches are like? o_O

I'm pretty sure from leaks of the plot some of those things make their way into the actual movie. The dance scene is supposedly in there.

I'm really disappointed in Reddit on this one. The only thing that this leak and thread indicates is that people are clinging to any reason to reason to shit on this movie.

There's an interesting bit at the end of the email that was not included in this post.

Anyway, these are all things we’re experimenting with and are looking forward to exploring as we write the first draft. I hope this helps in your lunch.

Why are people looking at this like it is a beat for beat summary of what the movie will actually become instead of the writer/director listing ideas that he may play around with?

Simply put, movie pitches are not supposed to be seen by the general public because in most cases everyone involved is still trying to wrap thier heads around what the project is going to be. It is well known by both parties in this case that these are all loose ideas that need a lot of effort in several departments to make work. That's how movies work.

This was a private correspondence that was written informally, by one person, in a morning, nearly two years ago, that is now supposed to act as a definitive indicator that the movie will be terrible?

I'm sorry if I have to be the one to break this to you but many movies that you adore looked something like this at one point or another. There is a huge divide between the initial pitch, the final script, and the finished product that crews of people been tweaking daily since 2014. A shitty email does not make a shitty movie, no matter how much Reddit may want it to.

    Such a lazy idea.

This movie is going to blow. It didn't even have to be this bad but Feig can't write for shit and they shoehorned in McCarthy and it's just going to be a shitstorm mess. Im sorry Kristen Wiig, you deserved better.

That sounds like a pretty standard surface-level movie pitch. He's roughly blocking out the overall shape and tone of the movie, the finished product probably wont look much like this. The dance scene is lifted from the Mask, but with a different scale and execution could be entertaining. Personally I think it's going to be a bad movie, but the stretching you spergs are doing to hate this is pathetic.

Isn't it true that in these leaked emails he basically told Reitman to go fuck himself?

    [–]the_human_raincheck 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

There's an email somewhere saying that he'd read the script for GB III by the Office writers (also the guys that wrote year one - yikes), and that it was a mess, and if he were to do it he needs Reitman to be hands off.

It was a lot more cordial than, "go fuck yourself".

    Source.

I retract what I stated earlier and will instead go and fuck myself

I thought it was Pascal who was against Reitman being involved in any way?

Yeah from the emails it was Pascal. She wanted Web to direct the movie before the new Spider-Man films came out and somewhere in his contract for the films it said that he gets to decide who can direct the film, and he wanted to direct Ghost Busters 3. He wanted the cast to be three guys and a girl and she wanted it to be four females and eventually it seems she just did whatever she could to give him the door.

Sounds like he was making the whole thing up as he was writing the email.

I still can't believe they didn't get Aykroyd to write the movie. The dude wrote both movies and a third unfilmed one. He's part of a legacy YOU COULD ACTUALLY CASH IN ON!

Edit : So people don't like Ghostbusters 1 & 2 now? Why in the name of Zeus' butthole am I being downvoted?

Who cares what the pitch is or was or will be in the future. The blame for this movie falls squarely on Sony.

Hey North Korea, how about unearthing Dan Aykroyd's first draft of Ghost Smashers ?

    [–]THE_ULTIMATE_RAPIST 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

sounds pretty much like the movie that one of the special effects guys posted on the ghostbusters subreddit

I think it was Spielberg who said 'if you cant pitch your film in 25 words or less, its not going to work.'

I was reading the pitch and it started out semi-reasonable and then about 1/2 of the way through i got aids and cancer and died from just reading this.
