Wasn't this sub started as a satirical sub, but then users started taking the whole 'masterrace' -'peasant' thing seriously?

I'd like them to show me a build, everything included (also windows), for under $400, that will play AAA games 6 years from now, without investing in any new parts.

I want you to show me a console that can do that first.

The 360 is almost 10 years old and still runs new releases.

Lol "runs" Playing releases on the last gen of consoles has been super shit for the last couple years.

still works

So will a pc

"Almost 10 years" being 9 years and 2 months.

9-year-old PCs also run mid-tier games on min settings, too.

Look I'm a pc gamer through and through and have been since the early 90s, but a 10 year old today is pretty much shit. Sorry but this is the one thing consoles do well: longevity. You couldn't pay me to use the pc I had back in 2004/5 today.

I know we love our pcs but let's not exaggerate.

The reason a 10 yeard old PC would be shit today is because games that come out on PC can actually be build on engines that use better hardware etc. Consoles are stuck with the same hardware they came out with, so the games made for them, have to be build to be able to run on that shit.

If you want to compare it, then a 10 year old PC will still be able to run games that were build for 10 year old hardware, just like consoles.

We're talking about AAA games not mid-tier games on the lowest settings

Your xbox 360 can only run games written with its limited capabilities in mind, aka mid-tier on shit settings.

There's a reason FIFA 14 and 15 use the ye olde Impact Engine in their Xbox 360 release rather than something halfway-modern like Ignite: your Xbox is running on antique tech. I'm certain my late 20-year-old computer could have run Call of Duty had an alternate version been implemented in a MUD engine, too.

No, it was never a satirical sub. It may have started out a little tongue in cheek, and some people started taking it somewhat more seriously, but at no point was the subreddit ever poking fun at PC gamers. Which it would've been if it was "satire".

And no, I'm not going to feed the troll on your request. If you're serious, you can look it up yourself. If you're not, then you've obviously already got your mind made up and there's nothing to be gained arguing with you.

If you read the Q&A you'd know the answer to that.

And you'd know that you can find such a build here in the wiki, and get an even better, more updated version on /r/BuildaPC.

Also: Show me the console that can play games at the same max quality that AAA PC games do, and I'll eat my hat. Don't worry about 6 years from now, in fact, how about six years in the past? That's 2009, the year of Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Arkham Asylum, Red Faction Guerrilla, and Resident Evil 5. Games I could play just fine on my $300 laptop at a higher quality at the time than consoles can today.

Firstly, consoles cost more than the initial price; you must factor in the online subscriptions and higher prices of games as well.

Secondly, no, I would not include Windows in a budget like that. You can pirate a perfectly good copy or run Linux, or just use an old copy of Windows. Heck, you'll probably be able to take advantage of Microsoft's offer of a free Windows 10 if you look around once that's released.

Thirdly, parts from six years ago still play games today. They simply have to play at lower settings, much like the consoles (much more quickly) degrade over several years relative to what the games each year could look like maxed out.

Any other fallacies you'd like me to address?

Don't forget Dreamspark. There are myriad ways of getting a legit copy.

You can pirate a perfectly good copy

If you are just gonna take bits illegally for free then you could just steal the PC from a store.

Yeah, because stealing physical hardware is obviously the same to copying some data. There's no tangible difference to the store whatsoever between the two scenarios. /s

I presented other options if you're not okay with piracy. Go with those.

It's not 100% identical to taking a physical item? No shit Sherlock. No one claimed it's utterly identical. You are still advocating breaking the law to get something for free.

And tbh as a software developer it's pretty insulting that you think software is worthless just because it can be copied. Go watch people pulling long nights for weeks/months during crunch time and try telling them what they produce should be worthless because you could copy/paste their software.

People put in time, money, and effort to build that stuff. So if you are going to use it full time then the least you can do is man up and pay for it.

I'm concerned with morality, not legality.

I'm a web developer. If I made commercial software I wouldn't care if someone stole it as long as they had a valid reason e.g. couldn't afford it, genuinely wouldn't have bought it anyway, etc.

Really? "Man up"? Sigh.

The original comment was about buying a $400 PC. With $400 you can afford a PC and Windows.

Second, you were also not suggesting piracy if he couldn't purchase it. You actually said ...

no, I would not include Windows in a budget like that. You can pirate a perfectly good copy

You were advocating piracy as the default option.

The original comment was about buying a £266.94 ($400) PC. With £266.94 ($400) you can afford a PC and Windows.

With $400 you're not getting a decent PC if you pay for Windows full price, meaning if you want a decent PC you can no longer afford Windows.

You were advocating piracy as the default option.

It being first does not make it the default option, it just means that's what came to mind first. Probably because there's a myth in /r/buildapc that pirated copies of Windows are somehow non-functional which I know to be untrue.

When you refuse to account for the cost of Windows and say he should just pirate it for a new PC build, that is advocating that you should just pirate Windows and never pay for it.

I've also seen first hand pirate copies get locked down. It happens when you are activating it through reusing existing keys. That happens with untrustworthy sellers of PCs who screw over their customers by selling machines with pirate copies of Windows installed (which is what happened to my friend).

There is also no guarantee the pirate copy hasn't been altered in some way. Something that's pretty trivial to do.

That is stating it is an option. I provided three other options that prevent killing the budget with an overpriced copy of Windows.

Yeah, generally you'd find a crack that doesn't suck. Before I bought Windows 8 I ran a cracked copy of Windows 7 for over a year. All updates worked. No issues.

I think people would have noticed were that the case.

Is the concept that consoles hold back advances in game development too complex for you?

The consoles don't play AAA games six years down the line because they're so great, IT'S BECAUSE AAA GAMES ARE PRIMARILY DEVELOPED FOR THEM.

YOU DENSE MOTHERFUCKER
