Any1 who saw Django would know my tweets&N-word were ironic.Nationalists in Nth were treated like African Americans.

Perhaps this bucket of oil will help put out the fire

This and the full "apology" he and SF gave make things so much worse than the original tweet ever was.

Semi-serious question: can someone explain why a supposedly-savvy political operator turned into a blithering fuckwit the second he was shown Twitter?

I've heard people say it's to project a cuddly and innocent image of himself to people too young to remember the troubles and what most of the senior shinners got up to back then. It's funnier to imagine he's just slowly gone round the bend since the GFA, though. :P

Ah Gerry, you're not as much craic as you think you are...

Aw come on he's a bit of craic at least. like a mad grandad who forgets it's not 1955 anymore.

[–]onto_deathBelfast 7ポイント8ポイント  (3子コメント)

Popcorn & a big bottle of brown lemonade in for watching this progress.

maine?

From the maine man no less? Our maine man is a mentalist. I think it's proximity to all those e numbers.

Hahaha

Nah I'm drinking maine brown lemonade out of a plastic bottle from spar. Doesn't feel the same like. :(

This is what happens if you let old people have smart phones.

What a retarded thing to do on the week of an election

Think he'll get suspended the way Ken Livingstone was?

[–]john_locke1689Belfast. Mayonnaise.

Who can suspend the party leader? The "we still haven't gone any you know" Chairman?

Who can suspend the party leader?

Mary Lou?

This after he said in March that he won't "sit at the back of the bus for anyone". There's a theme here Gerry! heh

You can see why Obama didn't let him into the White House

It's hilarious watching the usual SF supporters desperately try to defend this.

Are they? I've only seen one or two, the vast majority of people here are condemning it, or at the very least saying it was a stupid thing to do - which is not a defense by any means.

Nah read through all the threads in here /r/ireland and /r/unitedkingdom there's a good bit of rabid defence going on.

I was talking specifically about /r/northernireland, but fair enough.

Oh and the the usual Sinn Fein dissenters aren't jumping all over it to milk any bit of controversy that they can?

It's 'hilarious' seeing the Big Brother-esque 'drama' of everyone freaking out over Gerry Adams using a word in a non-racist, non-insulting context. Multiple news articles about it ffs and everyone lapping it up.

This kind of reaction only gives the word more power as a racial slur. Calling someone the word is racist, using it is not.

non-insulting context.

It's extremely insulting. It would be like the leader of a top Welsh party comparing what the Brits did to them to what happened here.

Oh, so had he just said that northern Catholics were treated similarly to blacks in America there would be similar uproar? Give me a break the outrage isn't coming from an unfair comparison of two civil rights movements the outrage is from the usage of a 'forbidden' word.

Plus why would someone be insulted at the Welsh politician? Why not just say 'you're wrong' and move on?

It's actually pathetic that you can't step far enough back from your love of SF to see that what he said was actually quite stupid.

No, the pathetic thing would be thinking something like that without being prepared to back it up with reasons (like you are doing right now).

I gave reasons for my views, you responded with a baseless insult. Forgive me for not being too uncomfortable about your disdain.

What am I supposed to say? You're wrong because 90% of people who are stating outrage about this are doing so because he made a stupid comparison in a stupid way? Then you'll go no it isn't. That's it.

The outrage is because people hate Gerry Adams and use every excuse to capitalise on that, for simply using a word or making an invalid comparison? Seriously? That's why you're pissed off because he inaccurately compared two different civil rights movements?

I mean you've just ignored every comment i've made to you and gone back to your own opinion again. It's impressive that you can block out anything anyone says against Gerry to uphold your opinion of him. What he said was ignorant and offensive, there's no excusing that.

What was offensive about it though? The only point you've made is that he compared the civil rights movement here to the civil rights movement over there? Is that really worth the outrage because one was actually worse?

"The outrage is because people hate Gerry Adams and use every excuse to capitalise on that"

Haha... really mate, welcome to the world.

Maybe he meant to say naggers...

Please somebody get that reference

Any minute now we'll be getting the old "irish were the blacks of europe" shite.

Here! Here! Now! I read this last week and it BLEW MY MIND!

This is actually where it apparently all started, at least on the internet; if you google "Irish slavery". Notice the number of footnotes you'd usually see associated with academic historical writing! Totally eye-opening stuff.

Fuck me both of your comments are somehow controversial...

I had a look at the odds on the next leader of SF on Paddy Power.

Not much money to be made betting on Mary Lou but I might stick a tenner on Pearse Doherty.

I think the old guard like McGuinnes or Ferris may be too close to retirement age now anyway to take over.

What do /r/northernireland people think?

And he's still more likeable than Arlene Foster.

So is syphilis.

And she'll no doubt condemn him in the media while deflecting questions about why her own party didnt condemn the wankers who picketed outside that Nigerian fellas house...

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/jun/18/nigerian-family-gives-up-new-home-loyalist-racist-protest-belfast-northern-ireland

That said, I think Gerry's a wanker for not having the wit to know better than to post shite like that on twitter. I don't believe he's a racist, but 'bumbling eejit' isn't exactly a great defence either... and just before an election. #fucksakegerry

Damn, he almost had the letters for 'Fleggers' :P

Just realised that he may have just made a mistake and he had actually been watching The Dambusters! In which case he must have been talking about our hero Sqn Ldr Guy Gibson's big black Labrador dog also named after the N word. An easy mistake to make and makes a lot more sense.

On the twitter machine I saw some suggestions it was a reference to the song Oliver's Army, or at least the same kind of reference as made in the song. Just thought I'd share it for sake of adding to the discussion. Here's the original tweeter
