What is signing a message exactly? Like having the password to an email service?

[–]usrn 9ポイント10ポイント  (3子コメント)

No. It's like a digital signature, proving that you own the keys used for signing.

(without owning the keys, you wouldn't be able to sign the message)

here's an example:

Message:

"I'm usrn and own and control 1UsPUkkmggFfbuxXTws4NdjAZLN1kH2hg."

Signature:

Look at this shit, we even have web based verifiers this guy could link directly to and everyone who doesn't trust it could copy it into their own client to confirm.

Yet some random shit involving London and a "brand new" laptop is what we get?

No, it's not like the password to an email service.

It's basically using the private key that controls the unspent outputs of a Bitcoin address to produce a signature for a message which can then be verified using the public key. As I understand it, it's basically how PGP works. All wallets capable of being a full node (Core, XT, Classic, Unlimited, etc.) have this functionality. I'm fairly sure Electrum, Multibit and Armory do as well. It's also available, though less common in mobile and web wallets.

The only issue with signing a message is that it reveals a public key (assuming it wasn't made public previously), which increases the vulnerability of associated funds to quantum (and possibly other attacks), so it might be simpler just to move some of his early coins. If I were to sign a message, I'd subsequently move the coins anyway just to keep them as secure as possible.

Yes, it is exactly like a password with a verry few posstible differences..

  1. The password is quite long.
  2. You never reveal your password, you only prove that you have the password that can be used to create a cryptographic valid message that matches the known public key.

(other responses shows this, but tries to show that it is not a password while it actually is)

Well, the "coins won't be moved because of trust" is a nice excuse. We can give him that. Sound so generous.

Yes, that trust seems to have a terrible shortage of bitcoin addresses. Why, I should offer my address for them to use.
