Ten days ago, we’ve covered an article from A Bola which said Manchester United were constantly following João Mário, but the club were still unsure if they would make a bid for the midfielder. It looks like things have changed.
Monday’s edition of the newspaper now claims that Manchester United will make an offer for João Mário at the end of the season. The information is included in an article which says Manchester United emissaries were present at the Estádio do Dragão last Saturday, when the midfielder had a “fantastic display” against Porto.
A Bola can’t say how much Manchester United will offer for João Mário, but they have a pretty good idea of what Sporting want. The midfielder recently renewed his contract and raised his release clause to €60m. Club president Bruno de Carvalho would have sold the player for half that amount, but the 23-year-old’s recent displays have convinced the club that his price should be raised.
So Manchester United would have to offer more than €30m (£24.5m) to open talks. A Bola also says that it would all depend on the market and on João Mário’s performances at the Euros, since it’s still not known how much game time will the midfielder get in the tournament.
According to A Bola, Manchester City officials were present at the game as well. The newspaper says that João Mário’s great performance “couldn’t go unnoticed” by their scouts.
